FASHION
British Designer
Julia Clancey
Hits the Runway at
Style Fashion Week
JR: When did you first visit the city?
JC: I think it was about 6 years ago as friends all came from L.A. to stay
at Ace for long weekend.
JR: What sparked your early interest in fashion?
JC: I think I have always had an interest in dressing up and I used to
design outfits when I was very young, although my only style guide was
the Freeman catalogue. It was a progression. It took many years as I
had many other jobs first.
JR: What skills are important for a successful career in fashion design?
JC: I am self taught so never went to college. London is a bit snobby so I
was never accepted as did not go to St Martins, etc. I find the snobby side of
fashion very amusing. I mean come on..out seam lines are not saving lives. It
is a lot of hard work and you need to be incredibly patient and focused.
JR: What made you take fashion more seriously and make a career out
of it?
EXCLUSIVE by Juli Ragsdale
Julia Clancey is a British fashion designer based in Los Angeles; her
clothes have dazzled the world over in highly publicized shows like
London, New York and Dubai Fashion Week. Her creations have been
featured in magazines including Vogue and ELLE and Harpers Bazaar.
The petite brunette has spent the last couple of years focusing and
developing her sophisticated accessory line. Her attention to detail and
love of vintage led to the creation of her latest collection showing at Palm
Springs Fashion Week when it debuts in mid-November.
Swarovski has endorsed the line, and as a brand partner, Julia uses the
highest quality of all materials when constructing a new collection. Her
upcoming assortment is all hand embroidered and made to order. The
pieces are made to be cherished and passed down to generations as
timeless statement adornments unlike most garments made in the modern
day world of fashion.
Her target market is 25-to 70-year-olds. Representative garments are
ballet skirts, baby-doll dresses, chic turbans (which have recently become
her trademark), and crystal-encrusted accessories.
Clancey describes her aesthetic as glamorous and fun, and says her clothes
are, “Floaty and very feminine based on silk georgettes, chiffons, and satins.”
Her first ten years in the fashion industry, she worked in various capacities,
including Editor of ‘Large’ magazine and Fashion Editor of ‘Cream’
magazine in Sydney, Australia and by styling for musicians as well as taking
on numerous advertising campaigns and creative projects. Over the
years, A-list celebrity clients, including Victoria Beckham, Dita Von Teese,
Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Mischa Barton and Cameron
Diaz noticed her work.
Clancey regularly shows her collection during London Fashion Week.
Notable press includes garments featured in the pages of Vogue, Glamour,
InStyle, ELLE, GQ, FHM, and Tattler. Julia Clancey products are sold
in boutiques in England, France, Spain, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon,
Kuwait, and Russia. Her primary business is done domestically, in London.
The clothing of the 1920s influenced Clancey’s Fall 2007 collection.
This November Julia unveils The Riviera Collection at Style Fashion
Week - Palm Springs. Vibrant magenta’s, pineapple yellow, papaya
and watermelon green delightfully clash with a selection of lilac, peach
and ice pink sorbets in a luxurious collection of voluminous kaftans,
tops, robes, summer gowns with matching headscarves. Brilliant whites
teamed with gold and silver ties. All in cooling cotton silk and cotton satin
carefully hand embroidered with gold sequins.
She says, “The inspiration? Very Elizabeth Taylor meets Cleopatra on the
French Riviera.” Oo-la-la!
Juli Ragsdale: Welcome! What brings you to Palm Springs?
Julia Clancey: I am going to be showcasing my resort collection with Style
Fashion Week and bringing along my brother and his line, Andrew Clancey.
JR: I hear you love Palm Springs?
LIVEMAGAZINE
JC: I fell in love with Palm Springs when I first visited about 6 years ago. I
love the architecture, dramatic landscape and climate. I love the old Hollywood
influence and the history of Palm Springs. The first time I stayed
at the Parker I remember wandering around the grounds alone late at
night with a martini thinking it should be my home. I adore Melvyn’s too
and I am hoping I can squeeze in a visit.
JC: I tend to do what makes me happy and making dresses made me
happy. You cannot do it for the money as the hours you put in are never
ending. I was a fashion stylist before too so it really was a natural progression.
JR: How has your work evolved since you began your own label?
JC: There are still signature styles from my first collection that carry
through to today. I have now had time to really create my signature
style. I love dressing up, so the design for woman that embraces that
too. It amuses me when people say they adore it but have nowhere to
wear it to. You make it happen, you create that situation!
JR: Are there any types of clothing that you avoid wearing or designing?
JC: Dungarees, although I love a good jumpsuit. Never say never, however.
Dungaree collection coming your way.
JR: What are you fascinated by right now and how does it shape your work?
JC: I am really getting back into doing gowns again. I said I would not
go back into it. I am also designing a luxury yacht tender from concept
and it is an incredible process. I’m hoping to do more after this one. It is
always great to keep learning something new. I’m not sure I will sell may
yachts in Palm springs...but…
JR: What advice would you give to young designers?
JC: Have an understanding of your brand and where you see it. The
fashion and retail industry is not in great shape and there is lots of competition,
so what stars you out from everyone else? Do you have rich
parents or a sugar daddy? as you may need one...hahaaa
JR: What would you like to achieve before the end of the year?
JC: A few days off and being totally pampered. I am in desperate need
of spa days. I would love to cycle through Joshua Tree too. I may be
coming back...or not leaving for a bit.
JR: How do you stay up to date with fashion?
JC: I pay no attention to fashion and never have apart from when I was
styling. Do not look at what other people are doing.
JR: Who is the most famous person to wear you?
JC: Gosh well I did some accessories for Madonna’s tour. It was on her
dancers, but still great. Keira Knightly wore a headpiece. Dita Von Teese
always look incredible in any of the pieces. Oh, back in the day even
Victoria Beckham. There have been a few and all very special to me for
different reasons. The most exciting was when Prince contacted me to
buy dresses for one of his artists for the Golden Globes, Grammys and
Oscars. That was crazy...I was very flattered.
JR: You worked with actress and Vogue cover girl Sienna Miller, how was
that?
JC: I worked with her on Bernard Rose’s film, Two Jacks, and it was incredible.
I had been saving this dress for the right person for years and
then this film comes along. I worked with some great actresses on that
film and adored scenes with Izabella Miko too as she was thrown up
in the air whilst dancing in one of the gowns. I love seeing the dresses
coming to life and use a lot of fabric for the movement.
JR: Tell me about the collection at Style Fashion Week in Palm Springs.
JC: It is a resort collection made from silk cotton, cotton satin and silk.
Hand embroidered. All one size. Very luxe. All ages. I called it the Riviera
Collection but we could call it Palm Springs...haha...
JR: What’s next for the Julia Clancey empire?
JC: Well once the yacht is done maybe private jets, hotels? haha who
know’s? I would love a holiday home in Palm Springs!

We were delighted by St Tropez fashions
were made to-order on the griddle, French
wine tastings and a handsome Pull-in underwear
has suffered slightly. But we are back in full swing now starting
with the fabulous, and dashingly handsome Sean Kanan
who just turned 50 (not that you would know it) Sean still
looks 35!
Even though turning 50 is a big a deal, an even bigger celebration
was in store when Sean was honored with a star on the
Palm Springs Walk of Stars. This momentous event was held
outside Uptown eatery, Eight4Nine. All of Sean’s nearest and
Michele were in attendance.
Later that evening I popped into The
at the Riviera Hotel. This event is
dear to me, as it was the first ever
event I covered for SBS one year
ago.
This was The Center’s 7th Annual
event. Host Kate Clinton was at the
top of her game captivating guests
with her quick-wit and unparalleled
humor. Entertainment for the evening
included an amazing musical
performance by LBGT talent, singersongwriter,
Steve Grand. I really
enjoyed the rendition of his single,
“All American Boy”. This song has
a self-produced and self-financed
video that went from zero to a million
YouTube views in a matter of days. It
was fun to enjoy it live on stage!
‘The Pops’, including Laurie Weitz,
Johnny Silverman, Rob Grace, Ariel
all attendance, rubbing shoulders
with PR supremo David Gray, Mike
READ
Richard Read has created elegant, timeless and inviting
rooms for more than 10 years. As a leading figure
in the industry, interior design has been the lifeblood
of Read.
Read’s work is where grandeur and luxury begin.
“As a designer, I don’t feel the need to simply fill
space,” he notes. “In Mid-Century Modern homes
especially, the design element I feel most strongly about is the use
of color.”
Obsessed with design for as long as he can remember, one of his
earliest memories was at the age of eight. He recalls his father,
who worked in construction, coming home with sets of floor plans.
“I loved his floor plans. I took them up to my room and opened
them on my drafting table. Yes, I had a drafting table at age eight,”
he said.
Now at the top in his field, Read has an unparalleled knack for
identifying what will make his clients happy. He listens very closely
to their needs, then uses his design education and in-depth guidance
to help them forge their own stamp on the places they call
home.
His ever-expanding interior and custom furniture design business
based in Palm Desert has clients from all over the world. He has
built a body of work that deftly injects a jolt of pop-culture sensibility
into a market that is so often more mundane.
Having grown up in an era when fashion is both high and low,
Richard Read knows that people want to live the way they dress:
luxuriously, and minimally. Sounds perfect for Palm Springs, right?
Drawing inspiration from many areas in history, this Desert-based
interior designer is responsible for designing some of the most celebrated
luxury homes. He has created sophisticated and impressive
spaces for the most demanding clients.
He connects interior design and people in a seemingly effortless
way. Each project creates a deep emotional chord for his client,
imbued with life and vision. Through this exclusive interview we
give you more about Read and some of his renowned projects.
“I think a decorator can really be anybody that has a passion for
design and great taste.” Read tells me.
Passionately and humbly, Read aspires to make each new project
better than the one before. On top of that, his revered, exquisite
taste has consistently seen him become the go-to guy for high-end
design in the Coachella Valley.
Read is an all-in or all-out kind of power man and has instilled that
philosophy into his company. No matter the challenge, there is
always a solution.
He is known throughout the Desert and beyond, but his name
was on everyone’s lips earlier this year when a car collided with an
SUV that crashed through the front of Richard Read Interiors in
Palm Desert sending two people to the hospital. Luckily, the store
is closed Sundays and there were no customers inside. But Read
had just left the building minutes before the SUV crashed through
the wall. Richard told the press at the scene, “I have seen accidents
happen all the time here so it has crossed my mind that one
day someone may crash into the store, and they did!”
But we’ll let you find out more about him in this enticing interview.
So LIVE Magazine fans... ‘Read’ on!
Sean Borg: When did you discover you had a flair for design?
Richard Read: As a child…My family is in the construction business
and my dad was always coming home with sets of floor plans
and I loved taking them up to my room and opening them on my
drafting table. I had a drafting table at 8. Also, I had a bookcase
with floor plan books and would spend hours looking at them. I
loved it. Not to mention I can’t even tell you how many times I
rearranged my room!!!
SB: How did you get started in Interior Design?
RR: I got my BA in Interior Design from CSU Sacramento and
worked in a commercial design firm and also took on some projects
of my own. After graduating, I came straight to the Desert to
work for my Aunt Linda Martin, who is a La Quinta based designer
specialized in custom furniture. I worked on and off with her for five
years. Then 4 years ago I started taking on clients and created my
own business.
SB: What inspired you growing up?
RR: Frank Lloyd Wright when I was a child. And Steven Ehrlich,
who I discovered here in an exhibit at the Palm Springs Art Museum.
He was a big inspiration during my college years. Also, my
grandmother. She was very artistic herself and had her ceramics
degree from Berkeley. She had impeccable taste and was always
rearranging and inspiring me.
SB: Your style is often described as quietly elegant. Do you see it
that way?
RR: I haven’t really thought of it, but I guess I can see what you
mean. I love elegance and that word. I love to present something
that’s classic and timeless. I am not persuaded by a current trend.
SB: What’s your typical workday like?
RR: I work a lot. I am up by 6 and usually on my computer in bed
until I’ve had three coffees and out the door by 8 or 9.. I am with a
few clients a day and checking on various jobs or my showroom…
I am always on the go, a moving target. My day is typically long
and usually continues through the evening with client dinners or
working late.
SB: What are the major differences between an interior designer
and an interior decorator?
RR: I think a decorator can really be anybody that has a passion
for design and great taste. An interior designer is usually someone
who has an education or degree in Interior Design, certified with
space planning, AutoCad or various computer programs. Although
an education doesn’t make a great designer, you either have it or
you don’t.
SB: What do you love about Palm Springs style?
RR: Indoor/Outdoor living. We are in one of the few places where
we celebrate living outdoors as much as indoors. With the gorgeous
mountains and palms trees, we always have such a beautiful
backdrop. There is always something to look at. Also, my two

favorite styles are Modern and Spanish revival. I love a home with
lots of glass and tall ceilings but I also love an old Spanish home with
a the Old World charm.
SB: Your showroom is in Palm Desert. Where are most of your projects?
RR: I chose Palm Desert because of its central location. My projects
are located all over the Valley. Some current projects are in Palm
Springs, ‘Mirada’ in Rancho Mirage, ‘Big Horn’ in Palm Desert, and
‘The Traditions’ in La Quinta.
SB: What made you open a showroom?
RR: I decided to open a showroom versus an office because I specialize
in custom furniture. I design a lot of my own pieces and wanted to
have a space to display that. Also, I wanted to have a place to attract
new clients and showcase what my unique style really is.
“As a designer, I don’t
In Mid-Century Modern
homes especially, the
design element I feel
most strongly about is
the use of color.”
SB:Describe Palm Springs in your own words?
RR: Palm Springs is a place where people come to relax and have
fun with plenty of sunshine! It’s very inspirational and healing.
SB: What is most challenging about your job?
RR: The fact that I am dependant so many other people. Like the
vendors I buy from, as well as the contractors and subcontractors
doing the work. I have to be on top of them. It’s very important. Their
work represents you as the designer.
SB: What do you need to consider when designing?
RR: To listen to the client because it’s their environment.
SB: What do you like most about being a designer?
RR: My clients. I am so lucky to have had wonderful people in my life.
In my business, it’s all about relationships. Designing is very personal
and I get to know the kids and be a part of their family. It’s very rewarding
but also satisfying to create a space that makes them happy.
My business is based on referrals from my happy clients.
SB: What piece in your portfolio are you most proud of?
RR: I have a very diverse look because of my clients’ taste and feel
very proud of all my work. But for me, opening the store is what I am
most proud of. My own personal look definitely leans on the more
Modern side, but I am very eclectic and love to mix it up. I love finding
treasures and old pieces that are special and unique. And for me. it’s
not about the overall design, but about each piece. You can’t live with
one piece in the mix that’s ‘just ok’. You have to like it all. Each element
has to provide an emotion, like a piece of art.
SB: Do you prefer functionality or appeal?

“My own personal look definitely leans on the more
Modern side, but I am very eclectic and love to mix
it up. I love finding treasures and old pieces that
are special and unique.”

RR: There is no reason you can’t have both. It’s about finding that
piece that works.
SB: What do you need to consider when designing?
RR: A client’s wants and needs. And of course, budget. Most importantly,
to listen to the client. Everyone has a different personality and
it’s so important that you are creating a design environment to represent
that. It’s their space.
SB: What advice would you give to entry-level interior designers just
getting started? What do you wish you knew now?
RR: Work as hard as possible and never give up your goals and
dreams. This is a rough business based mainly on economy so never
let your desire go. It’s easy to get side tracked but you have to do in
life what you’re passionate about. I graduated right before the last big
economic crash and did what I had to do. I even worked in retail at
Nordstrom for two years when things were bad. I hated it but I followed
my desire and have fought and worked hard to make it happen. It’s not
easy.
SB: What should someone starting a design career know?
RR: There is a lot more to interior design than most people realize. It’s
not all just picking out fabrics and shopping.. It’s high stress and lots of
hard work.
SB: What inspires you today?
RR: Rest, travel and shopping. If I don’t get rest, then I can feel drained
and uninspired. It’s important for me, especially on Sundays, to have
some down time to sit by the pool and just think. Travel is great because
it gets me out of my daily routine and it gives me a change of scenery
and climate. It’s important to get inspired by different architecture or art.
And of course shopping! I am lucky to do that for a living and go to LA or
Orange County a lot. It’s nice to be out. I like going to the different furniture
shows and seeing what’s new and exciting!
DESERT DENTAL
ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
CHANGING THE FACE OF DENTISTRY IN THE DESERT
With the extensive training he has received over the last 25 years, Dr. Bruno Lemay’s
unique experience has set him apart from any other dental practitioner in the desert.
Dr. Lemay is able to perform every specialized dental treatment right in his office,
making Desert Dental Alternatives one of the only “one stop” general dentistry
offices in the area.
CONVENIENT, AFFORDABLE CARE UNDER ONE ROOF
At Desert Dental Alternatives, there is no need to go from one office to another to
have implants, crowns , surgery or root canals. Dr. Lemay performs all procedures
himself, from the surgical stage of implantology to the restorative stage, saving patients
valuable time and money. Having all dental work performed by one dentist in
the same office provides the patient with added peace of mind and confidence that
their care is being expertly handled from start to finish and much less hassle to have
to drive from one office to the other.
One of the reasons Desert Dental Alternatives is so unique is that there are very few
dentists in California performing implant dentistry with the high success rates Dr.
Lemay is known for. In most practices, the patient is referred to see a specialist who
places the implants and then returns to the referring office for the restorative dentist
to place the prosthetic part.
Most patients do not enjoy visiting the dentist, or do not have the time for long,
drawn out appointments. That’s why it’s important to pick a dentist with a gentle
touch and exceptional skill, who can give you the best results in the fewest number
of visits. Dr. Lemay respects your time and focuses on getting you out of the chair
with the best quality treatment so you can get back to the activities you enjoy. And,
at Desert Dental Alternatives, you can feel confident that you are getting the best
possible care at a price that fits your budget.
so many insurance providers is because we have developed a
very efficient top-quality team over the last 15 years. We pride
ourselves on working smarter, not harder to get your dental work
done efficiently.”
“Being able to work with PPO insurance is important for our clients so they can use
the benefits they pay for,” says Dr. Lemay. “The reason why we are able to work with
LEADING-EDGE ALTERNATIVES FOR THE HIGHEST CALIBER CARE
Because of Dr. Lemay’s involvement in all stage of implantology,
root canal therapy and dental surgery, it was essential for his
practice to offer the most advanced technology in terms of diagnostic
scanners. Desert Dental Alternatives is the only general
dentistry office in the desert with a 3-D Cat-Scan machine. Dr.
Lemay’s patients benefit from this technology without having to
go to another facility or hospital, or pay excessive fees for this
type of X-ray. The 3-D image allows Dr. Lemay to provide the best
service to his patients quickly and efficiently, at a fraction of the
price they would have to pay for a Cat-Scan elsewhere.
“Since I have been working with the CT scanner, I wonder how
I was able to work without it, and how any other dentists can
perform the best treatment possible without this amazing tool,”
he says.
The name of Dr. Lemay’s practice, Desert Dental Alternatives really
says it all. Dr. Lemay and his staff pride themselves on never
pushing patients towards a unique treatment because it’s all they
offer. Instead, patients are educated on all the various treatment
options regardless of the cost, so they can make an informed
decision. For example, standard implants are often a good solution,
but there are also cases where patients could benefit from
mini-implants. Since Dr. Lemay is the only dentist in the desert
successfully performing both techniques for over two decades,
there is no other place to learn about both options during the
same visit.
CHRIS HASSETT IN “DECEMBER:
MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR”
Award-winning vocalist and entertainer Chris Hassett
returns to MA4, with long-time musical partner Drew Massicot on
piano, in a new show that will musically and humorously explore not just
the season of joy and wonder but also the month of revelry and regret.
Chris will draw from his growing repertoire of ballads, standards, country
tunes, and carols — as well as originals — to weave a holiday story that
is poignant, memorable and, best of all, fun!
His impeccable phrasing, warm on-stage personality, and rich baritone
have won him unabashed praise from audiences and critics alike and
garnered favorable comparisons to the best singers of any era. Bring a
few friends to enjoy a fun-filled evening of song, laughter, tears, and true
musical artistry from one of San Diego’s most beloved entertainers.
Chris Hassett has been
singing for six decades now
and he still can’t wait to get
up in front of his next audience
and sing his heart out!
Chris didn’t grow up in a musical family exactly — just a music-filled
home. Like a lot of Baby Boomers, he caught the waves of popular
music just right — grooved with Elvis in the 50s, danced to the Beatles
and the Beach Boys, discovered the political power of music through
Dylan and Baez, marveled at the songwriting talents of Jackson Browne,
Neil Young, Bacharach, and so many more, was seduced by Bowie and
throughout all those eras he maintained an abiding love for Classical,
Broadway, Oldies, and the Great American Songbook.
He finally began my recording career (2009) and now have five strong
albums I’m exceedingly proud of – most recently, All of Me (2016), a collection
of jazz and pop standards and featuring some top musicians.
Chris’ albums (available through his website, iTunes, and other online
music retailers) reveal a lot of who he is. In fact, his music tells his life
story. Many of the original songs reveal deeply personal episodes in his
life — joy and sorrow, celebration and defeat, love and loss. Discover his
passion for delivering positive, heart-warming messages through song.
