This is Thanksgiving week, visual and performing
artists have contributed to enhancing our lives to
reflect on where we are in history through 2 and
3 dimensional visual art, music and performing
arts.
We have just completed an historic election.
Donald Trump one of the most controversial
individuals ever elected, has been narrowly selected
by the electoral college, to by the President
elect. When his selected vice presidential choice,
Mike Pence, was attending the Broadway hit show
“Hamilton” last Friday evening, he was provided
with a curtain call speech by actor Brandon Dixon
who plays Aaron Burrr. He said: “We,sir, are
the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious
that your new administration will not protect us,
our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us
and uphold our inalienable rights,”. He went on to
say, “We truly hope this show has inspired you to
uphold our American values and work on behalf
of all of us.”
As our LGBT community celebrates Thanksgiving
we need to be mindful that we have a new
administration that does not respect the diversity
of our lives and of many others who are not of the
category that they find “acceptable”. Our thanks
should go out to artists of all genres who use
their talents to remind the Trump administration
that the United States is INCLUSIVE. HAPPY
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by jersey Shore
I was hosting the Mr. Nude Contest at
CCB this Pride weekend. I approached a
few guys about participating. You could
win a TWO night stays, worth a lot of
money. They go there, why not try to
save a few hundred dollars just to parade
around a pool naked?
The kicker for me is that when I
approached each man and all the men
around them were naked. They are
already naked, everyone’s seen it, and
everyone has probably had it in various
openings that day. So, I don’t understand
the big deal.
I got a few recruits. One issue was not
winning. Well there can only be one
winner, so that’s the chance you have
to take. It was a competition and they
didn’t want to be judged. Sorry to say,
but you are always getting judged. Mostly
with your clothes on, so...get used to it.
It’s judgment city out there. Get used
to it, or stop judging others. I decided
that the audience will pick the winner
by applause, meaning they will have to
judge each contestant. I explain to everyone
who signed up that MY contest winners
are NOT automatically the young,
dumb, tight bodied, big dicked boys. It
was personality, fun, and bringing a personality
to that naked body. EVERY time
I’ve done it that way the less attractive,
smaller packaged contestant has won!
So, yes, it is about personality and soul
and character of a person that you should
be judging. They won’t always be naked,
but you can “admire” that later, if you
“judge” correctly.
Peace, Love, and Acceptance.
Rotary Friendship Exchange. Johannesburg, South Africa (Greg Pettis second from right)
A wild Elephant wandering about Kruger National Park. (photo by Greg pettis)
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
I’m sitting in the O. Rambo International
airport in Johannesburg, South Africa waiting
for my flight home. It’s been a fascinating
times here as part of a Rotary Friendship
Exchange.
My team of 5 people from the Inland Empire
toured 5 different cities and Kruger National
Park. It was amazing to see the reverence
that everyone, black or white, consider Nelson
Mandela. No one claimed him to be
a great administrator, but all said he was
a true visionary. Someone who knew his
countrymen, understood where his country
needed to go and provided the direction to
set his nation on a new course
We traveled to Soweto and visited his home
and just down the street the home of Bishop
Desmond Tutu. This is the only place in the
world where two Nobel Peace Price winners
lived on the same street
We ate all our meals with people from
South Africa, sometimes our home hosts
and some with various Rotarians. The one
thing everyone wanted to know was....... can
you guess it? What did we think of Donald
Trump. No one on our team from CA voted
for him. And only one person we met along
the way in Africa supported him
There was a general nervousness and unease.
They have corruption issues with their president
and never thought we would, but they
are worried about policy, security and a drift
towards reactionary conservatism
At the Apartheid Museum, the first display
was on “Talking of Faith”. It was a moving
demonstration of the LGBTI community of
faith in South Africa. I never would have
thought this would have had a place in this
museum, but the South African constitution
is the most liberal on same gender
issues. Marriage equality has been the law
of the land for years. The museum wanted
to show that LGBTI folks have some of the
same issues as the black and colored population
of the country. If only we were so
progressive
I have been quiet here and on Facebook
about Donald Trump. Obviously I am horrified
and scared about him being President.
But I must say the one reason I want him to
succeed is simple - Mike Pence. Pence is the
new Dick Cheney. Angry, anti LGBT, anti
woman, a war mongerer. This is who we
should be worried about, not the caricature
who will take office on January 20
Think on it. Send your thoughts. Greg@
gregpettis.com
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral
City. He has made his name in governmental circles
as an expert in transportation issues and is very active
in working on bringing passenger rail service to the
COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly gay
elected city council members In Riverside County. He
has served on the boards of the National League of
Cities and the League of California Cities and as President
of the Southern CA Association of Governments.
