A QUARTERLY NEWS PUBLICATION FROM SRI VISHNU EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan
Director,
Sri Vishnu Educational Society
Interaction with A.L.Kishore, Associate Professor
(BVRIT N), Mr. Arun Kumar (3 ECE), Ms Caroline (3
EEE) & K Anuraag Kaushik (3 ECE) at VEDIC Campus.
Sri Vishnu Educational Society has the privilege to have Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan as
its Director. It is really an honour to have someone of his stature to be at the helm of
affairs at Sri Vishnu Educational Society whose leadership acumen will definitely take
SVES to the next level. His most endearing quality is his humility and his genuine good
nature. His illustrious contributions to the nation and humanity have made him a role
model who has inspired vast multitudes of our present day generation.
Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan was an outstanding missile scientist with Defence
Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad between 1974 and 2011. Prior to
joining NIT in 2011, Dr. Sundarrajan was with Missile Programme of Defence Research
and Development Organization for over thirty years and received mentoring by
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.
He was the Director of National Institute of Technology – Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) from
2011 – 2016, a prestigious Institute that is rated consistently among top ten institutions
in India. He was actively engaged in transforming this Institute to the future
requirements through strategies and initiatives, adopting disruptive technology
route.
Dr.Sundarrajan completed Mechanical Engineering from Thiagarajar College of
Engineering, Madurai, and did his post graduation and doctorate degrees at the Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras, in Industrial Metallurgy. He also has a PG certificate
from Indian Statistical Institute. As an INAE (Indian National Academy of Engineering)
– AICTE Distinguished Professor, Dr.Sundarrajan made significant contribution in
integrating curriculum development and emerging areas of technology.
The recognitions he won include UNESCO Fellowship (1988), Best Metallurgist of the
Year Award from the Govt. of India (1992), Vishwa Bharathi Award for Professional
Excellence (1999), Performing Team Award (2004), and Best JV Management Award
(2008). Madras Management Association awarded Professional Excellence Award
(2013) in the category of Best Managed Education Institution.
Do all successful people realise their dreams? What was your dream when you
were young?
For me, dreams keep on changing with time. As a high school student my dream was to
become a Loco Engine Driver. After finishing engineering, I wanted to become a great
technologist. Then, at a later stage, when I started handling major projects as a part of
missile programs my dream was to become the head of a very major missile program.
After having successful and satisfying stint at the best of defence organizations, I
changed over to academic line. I joined NIT as Director and then my strong dream was to
bring out transformation in Higher Education. I pursue my dream at SVES now.
When I have relooked of the path I have travelled so far, the very first stage was all
oriented to skill (Locomotive driver). The second stage was oriented to knowledge and
research (Head of the technology). The third stage was aligned with Management (Head
of Missile Programme). During the current stage, my orientation is towards society at
large (Transformation of Higher Education).
Do you think the curriculum we follow today is a bit out-of-date considering the
amount of advancement witnessed in Science and Technology?
As on now, academic curriculum is related to books .It takes considerable period of time
to compile and publish a book. Technology is changing very fast and it is very difficult to
keep up pace with the technology. So, there will always be a gap between curriculum and
technology. In this age of internet, knowledge is disseminated expeditiously and books
are slowly becoming obsolete to us. However books on Mathematics, Physics and other
basic concepts will always remain significant but books on technology will always lag
the actual advancements and breakthroughs. Keeping this in mind, one should not give
much prominence to the old technologies in textbooks and be open to replace those by
the relevant technology. Only then we will be able to fill the gap between our curriculum
and present day scenario.
How crucial is it to network R&D institutes and laboratories to educational
institutions?
The national R&D laboratories have state of art facilities. Government has invested
ISSUE 13 OCTOBER 2016
heavy funds in R&D infrastructure like CSIR, ISRO, DAE and DRDO.
These institutions have highly specialized scientists, with focus on
emerging technologies. We have to accept the fact that it is highly
difficult for us to have R&D facilities like them. The best strategy we
may follow is to make use of these R&D organizations by linking with
them. It is not easy to have collaborations with these reputed
organizations, but once we enter into such partnerships, it will be a
huge opportunity for us. At SVES, our goal would be to have a program
plan, which is a win-win strategy for all players.
You got mentored by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at DRDO. What was
the most unique quality of him that you admired and tried to
emulate?
Dr Kalam was an excellent person with superb qualities. For him there
was no hierarchy. He was a simple and highly focused person and
always very open to criticism. The one aspect which really inspired me
was his focus towards youth development. India with highest
population of youth by 2020 can definitely aim at becoming knowledge
superpower if we keep our focus on youth education, skill and
entrepreneurship.
Dr Kalam was instrumental for my entry into academics.
After my career in Missile program I was moving out as
global head of a multinational R&D facility. At that time
there was an offer from MHRD to join as the Director of NIT. I
consulted Dr Kalam regarding this. He gave specific
direction for me to use the opportunity to head NIT and
execute strategies for transformation as a service to give
back to the society.
What would be your message to the students who
aspire to become Missile Scientists?
Anyone who aspires to be a Missile Scientist should first
aspire to become a technology leader. Missile systems
having complex subsystems and components offer exposure
to multidisciplinary technologies. These technologies have
great business potential. Missile Scientists are technology
developers, integrators and entrepreneurs. Students have
to develop knowledge, skill and business acumen to
succeed as Missile Scientists
Please brief about the project that you consider the
most challenging in your career as Missile Scientist
at DRDL.
For anybody, the biggest challenge comes during the first
ten years of one's career. As a student of IIT Madras, there
were many opportunities available for me and I was able to
secure as many as fourteen jobs. I landed in DRDL at
Hyderabad with a plan of seeing places at Hyderabad and
move over to TELCO Pune. The assignment at DRDL was so
attractive that I spent my entire career there. When I joined
DRDO in mid 70's, only six countries had missiles technology
and I was placed in a top secret project. I got initial exposure
at HAL, Koraput, Odisha where they were working on
Russian technology. Later I returned to DRDL and worked on
developing hundreds of components based on the
technology experience. This was the most challenging
period of my career.
Will we see SVES working in collaboration with
premier R&D institutes in near future?
SVES is a versatile organization with multiple institutions in various
disciplines. India has many premier government agencies (ISRO,
CSIR, DRDO, DAE) that focus on R&D. They all have heavily funded
applied research programs. These institutions have excellent
scientists and state of the art research facilities. We will get aligned
to their requirements and involve our faculty and students. Our focus
will be on networking these major organizations with SVES. In the
beginning, it would be challenging, but once started, we will move
forward.
What was your immediate response when you got the proposal
for being the director of SVES?
My work at NIT was the first phase of my journey in academics. My
focus was to transform the 50 year old government funded institution
to the current requirements of higher education with special attention
to students needs. Because of the limited number of seats in NITs and
IITs, only a few lucky students get a chance to study in these
institutions. I realized that majority of our students are in private
institutions. These students require much more attention. Institutions
like SVES are capable of taking and executing very quick decisions.
This is not possible in Government institutions. Also there is a gap
between aspirations of these students and capabilities of the faculty.
A person with very high academic qualifications need not necessarily
be a good communicator or a good teacher. So there is a need for
improving the communication and psychological connection between
students and faculty. I decided to focus on students in private
institutions and get involved in faculty development activities during
the second phase of my academic career.
Our Chairman Mr Vishnu Raju is a Distinguished Alumnus of NIT,
Trichy. He received the award from Honourable President of India for
his outstanding contribution to the society. During discussions with
him, I could sense his passion combined with sincere efforts to shape
up our students to ethical and excellent professional. Dr V S Raju, a
leading academician and past Director of IIT Delhi, spoke very high
about Mr Vishnu Raju during his visits to NIT, Trichy. Mr Vishnu Raju
impressed me with his simplicity and sincere goals. With this
background, I was happy when he offered the post of Director SVES
during our discussions. Our Vice Chairman, Mr Ravichandran is also an
“
The personal satisfaction came, when I changed my
field to academics and started focusing on students. I am on
Facebook with my students (Higher Education, India). I am
connected to about 14,000 students. I know their aspirations,
difficulties, dreams and challenges. I find immense
satisfaction in interacting with students and this keeps me
going forward in my mission.
“
alumnus of NIT, Trichy. The zeal and enthusiasm with which both of
them are putting efforts to bring the best practice available in any part
of the world to SVES during the past decade confirmed the
professionalism in management and commitment to society. Setting
up of VEDIC is an excellent initiative being executed for the first time in
the country. My mission matched with SVES goals. I took the decision
and joined SVES.
Sir, we have read that you have "networked over 400 industries
and 40 academic institutions for R&D leading ". How do you
comprehend or associate so many things?
When we consider major programs, each program costs about 3000 to
4000 crore rupees and almost 70,000 personnel are involved in such
programs. Development and production are taken care of by industry
and research part is done in academic institutions and research
laboratories. There are 20 to 30 major industries like HAL, ECIL, etc.
and 400 small scale industries. We follow a structure called project
management and program management, which gives us necessary
expertise on managing large scale programs, in terms of networking,
monitoring and maintaining these programs. The flow of information
is very fast. Networked management structure is the key factor.
Programme Management with structured information flow and timely
decisions helped me to handle the otherwise complex looking tasks.
What developments do you want to bring about in the SVES
society for the next five years?
SVES is an excellent group with multiple streams of education like
Engineering, Pharmacy, Dental, Science Courses, etc. Because of this,
we have the advantage of faculty having different skill sets and
expertise. Academic Integration could help in forming
multidisciplinary teams that work on the emerging areas of
technology. This makes us relevant in 2020. Collaboration with the
Industry and foreign universities is the key. Also, Classroom Lecture
delivery has changed over a period of time. We will use more of virtual
classrooms and the concept of flipped classroom, where in the student
go through the lecture at home or hostel and work out the assignments
and carry on activities in the class. Flipped classrooms allow teachers
to have more time to clarify the doubts of the students. At VEDIC we
are designing few studios that will help the expert faculty to prepare
the video lectures that could be used by the students
anytime, anywhere. Students can watch these lectures
even during their travel between the college and their
home. It will be more learning than teaching in future, both
for the student and teacher. We will focus more on applied
research, Innovation and entrepreneurship activities by
establishing an effective Industry – Institute
collaboration. We will also build up an useful alumni
interaction cell. VEDIC is a very good initiative to bring all
of us viz faculty, students and nonteaching staff together
to achieve our goals. I am sure with all these initiatives,
SVES can become a force to reckon with in the field of
higher education in future.
Sir, you have achieved many milestones throughout
your marvelous career .Name any one achievement
that stands out - the one which gave you immense
satisfaction.
I found professional satisfaction in my three decade long
career at DRDL. The personal satisfaction came, when I
changed my field to academics and started focusing on
students. I am on Facebook with my students (Higher
Education, India). I am connected to about 14,000
students. I know their aspirations, difficulties, dreams and
challenges. I find immense satisfaction in interacting with
students and this keeps me going forward in my mission.
What do you think of the popular opinion that hard
work isn't enough to rise up the ranks?
Hard work definitely plays a major role in one's success.
But there are other things which need to be practiced. Prior
to hard work one needs to plan properly. Once planned,
one should focus on it and carry out midcourse corrections
wherever necessary. A good team-player achieves a lot. A
lot more can be achieved working together than working
alone. It is similar to music where many instruments are
played together to create a good tune and each instrument
has pivotal role in making the song soulful.
What is your success mantra for life, any favorite
quotes and from whom did you draw inspiration from during
your formative years?
Swami Vivekananda's famous quote “Arise, awake, and stop not till
the goal is reached” continues to inspire me and is my mantra for life. I
don't have any personal quotes.
I was inspired by several people at different stages of my life. When I
was young, my parents inspired me the most. My father was mentored
by Dr Annie Besant for the education of Indians. He was an excellent
orator and an authority in English. My mother was the first lady in the
family to study in Queen Mary's college in 1930s.Both these noble
persons sacrificed their life for education and were my primary source
of inspiration. During my college days, I drew my inspiration from Prof.
Md Roshan, who was instrumental in bringing my focus towards
research and technology. Subsequent to him was Air Marshal
Narayanan and finally Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. I was highly inspired by
Dr. Kalam.
LEADER SPEAK
Intarakushon - インタラクション (The Interaction)
Masayoshi Tamura, the General Manager of the Hitachi India Pvt. Ltd. is in charge of the operations of Hitachi software group in India.
His goal is to work in partnership with India. He is the Co- Chair, Japan Council, NASSCOM, and he aims at collaboration between Japan
and India. He works in collaboration with Indian companies. He also bridges the industry academia gap by being a part of educational
institutions, engineering colleges in particular.
Given below are excerpts of his interaction with the staff and students of Vishnu Institute of Technology and Shri Vishnu Engineering
College for Women.
Masayoshi Tamura built an instant rapport with the students. “I love India” he says with an infectious enthusiasm. He presents the
Japanese perspective of Indian culture in terms of cricket and movies. For him, like for other Japanese, India brings to his mind cricket
and movies. He likes the movie “Three Idiots” and he identifies himself with the character of Raju in the movie. He likes the “You keep
your job, I keep my attitude” kind of thing in the movie and feels it represents the energy and will power of Indians.
This rapport now intensifies into affinity as he draws a comparison between India and Japan. The Indian and Japanese ecosystems are
well laid out.
T H E C U LT U R A L A F F I N I T I E S
Mr. Tamura finds similarities between India and Japan. Both the
countries share the concept of the three wise monkeys or the three
mystic apes. It is a pictorial maxim which embodies the principle "see
no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
The second resemblance is in terms of mythology and folklore. The
Hindu Goddess Saraswati is also present in Japanese mythology as
Benzaiten. She is one among the seven Japanese Gods of Fortune. She is
most often seen carrying a musical instrument called a Biwa. She came
from India originally. She was associated with all virtues in movement
and in progress. She is the goddess of knowledge, art and beauty,
especially music.
Amitabha, of Buddhism is the third resemblance. Buddhism is a
common religion between India and Japan.
I N D I A A N D H I TA C H I
For him India is not a business field, it is a field to work. One example is
pollution. The garbage segregation system is not effective in Bangalore.
Japan experienced such a pollution which caused the Minamata disease
resulting in the death of many people. He fears the same for India.
Adequate precaution needs to be taken.
It is here that Hitachi can support India. Hitachi is a social infrastructure
company working for social innovation. It is into power, water, transport
and financial services.
Moreover, in India there are million people who are not connected to the
grid. Hitachi can support them. For Mr. Masayoshi Tamura, India is an
exciting country. Technological development is taking place rapidly.
Anything can happen in India. He loves to work in India, for India, with
India. For him India is a gate way to work for the world.
When it comes to engineering, India and Japan have some things in
common. The Japanese learn from KAIZEN which is just in time
philosophy and the Indians also learn from their past. Indians have
Jugaad which is based on frugality and flexibility. Indians can do
Jugaad, but the Japanese cannot do it. They have their own restrictions
like quality assurance.
O P P O R T U N I T I E S
Mr. Tamura sees India as a heterogeneous country. The geographical,
social, political, religious and cultural diversity is huge and the range
and volume of this diversity is absolutely bewildering. On the other
hand, he finds Japan to be homogenous. They have a uniform culture
and they manage any minor differences, if any.
He has an interesting observation to make. On the world map, India is
smaller when compared to Greenland. Japan is much smaller. India
must project itself on the world. India is a mystery to many Japanese
and so is Japan to the Indians. Mr. Tamura makes an effort to bridge the
cultural differences and increase the mutual awareness of both the
cultures. “I request you Indians to show yourself more to Japan. They
don't know you very well”, he quips. The need is sharing of ideas,
resources, in short a partnership between the two countries.
T H E I N D I A N PA R A D O X
Engineers in India develop technologies, work on their products and
also do Jugaad. Innovation is in their blood. Some criticize that global
innovation companies are yet to emerge in India. But, on the other hand,
there are many Indian leaders in the global scenario.
D I F F E R E N T I AT O R S
The Japanese are slow. But they have their own strengths. They are
committed and aim at perfection. For them high quality is the
differentiator and they build reliable systems. On the other hand the
Japanese find that there is agility and quick action in India. When it
comes to time, Japanese are sticklers to punctuality. For them two
minutes is 120 seconds where as for Indians time goes on.
Mr. Tamurai feels that India with its 1.2 billion populations is a land of
huge human talent and resources. Its strength is the huge pool of young,
talented, passionate work force. The youngsters are dynamic and have a
can do attitude and culture.
Mr. Tamura aims at combining the strengths of both the countries. For
example, he says, Indians can build the prototypes and the Japanese
can then perfect them. “We need people who experiment, who do R & D.
kind of things. Indians are good at that. After having tried the output,
then the Japanese can perfect them and build a reliable product.” This is
being done in software already he points out. For him, Jugaad is
strength of the Indians.
Another interesting observation made by Mr. Tamura is about the Indian
traffic. Indian traffic is chaotic. Actually, it is one of the major problems
of India. But on second thoughts, he finds that this chaos caused by
traffic turned out to be source of strength. People in India are trained to
deal with confusion and chaos. That could probably be one of the
reasons why they make good leaders in global organizations. Satya
Nadella, an Indian, current CEO of Microsoft, one for example, and
Indian CEOs of other MNCs can deal with complicated issues. The
labyrinth of Indian traffic must have trained him, he opines.
Let's work for the world using your
strength. The world is waiting for you.”
he calls on a closing note.

GOAL
POST
Pavan Kumar (Raju) Kanteti,
ECE (2008-12), BVRIT
MS in Information Technology &
Management, University of Texas
at Dallas
Everyone has his own reasons for coming to the US for Masters. My
reason was to have a degree in Management and at the same time
experience a diverse learning environment and global exposure.
With these two ideas in mind, I came to the United States in the fall
of 2014 to the University of Texas at Dallas.
Usually most of the students who come to the US from India are
completely involved in their studies and do not take time for other
activities. Considering the amount of money one spends for a
foreign degree, this is totally valid. But along with achieving a
world class Master's degree, I wanted to take full advantage of the
other opportunities that the University provides to shape myself
into a better, well learned person.
I started off with volunteering for the Indian Students Association
(ISA) here, which is the largest Indian Students Association
across the United States with more than 2500 students. This part
of being active in extra-curriculars was something I learned at
BVRIT. During my stay at BVRIT, I was one of the student
conveners and creative head for Zealotz 2011. So the
participating nature came naturally to me and I interacted with
my peers, participated in the club activities and tried to help the
organization and I gradually grew from a volunteer to the
President of the organization. I lead a team of 25 officers. My take
away from this was learning team management and developing
leadership skills. I had a chance to work with the likes of the
President of the University, the Dallas Police Department etc.,
when the student community was facing some issues. I got a
chance to lead the team that represented India and won 1st place
at the International Talent Show, which is a competition among
all the nationalities here and UTD has 110 of them. We have
organized International Student Pickups 2015 and picked up 1000+
international students from airport and provided temporary
accommodation and helped in their smooth transition. We have
organized Webinars and Orientations for newly admitted students
to help in their smooth transition. These are to name a few of the
numerous activities of the organization. From all these, I have
learned how to represent a community to the world. I believe this
experience taught me more than what an MBA degree would teach
me.
Along with ISA, I have been a part of other technical clubs and I was
awarded with Dean's Impact Scholarship for displaying
extraordinary impact to the school.
Apart from these, my most cherished stint at the University would
be participating in the Business Idea Competition. One of the
biggest competitions of the Dallas area that started with more than
a 100 teams and filtered down to 6 teams for finals through quarters
and semis. The final presentation was to a 1100+ audience and
investors and was judged by Mark Cuban of Shark Tanks and
owner of the Dallas Mavericks himself. My team mate and I won
first place in People's Choice Award, second place in Judge's
Award and a cash prize. Being one of the best experiences of my life,
this taught me everything from how to make a business pitch to
presenting in front of a huge audience to competing with
executives who are already running their businesses. I have got
investors for my business idea at the same stage and the University
is helping me in setting up my business. When other students of
Indian origin were only aiming to be the audience at the event, I
took the initiation to participate and it made all the difference.
Again I can proudly say that BVRIT has prepared me for this. When
I was at BVRIT, I participated in the Microsoft Ideation Contest and
worked on a project sponsored by them at the BVRIT Innovation
Center. So again the roots came from there. When I think of it now, I
remember the famous words by Steve Jobs, “the dots only connect
backwards.”
Just before my graduation, I was awarded with the Student Leader
of the Year Award, the highest and most prestigious award for any
student at the University with a community of more than 30,000
students. The other Indian who has won this Award was Mr. Naveen
Jindal of Jindal Steel in '92. My name was entered into the
University's Hall of Fame.
At the time of writing this post, I have just received job offers from
Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and SunTrust. I'll start working with
one of them soon.
The reason why I'm telling all these is not boast about myself, but
but to make a point to the reader that one has to take full advantage
of all the opportunities that come across their way to improve
themselves along with studies. And one should never fear to dream
big. Learn to participate, take initiative and try new things.
Whatever be the result, at the end of the day, all you will have is a
wealth of knowledge. Had it not been for my participation, I
would have been a regular student who finished off his Masters
and took up a job.
BVRIT provides you with a waterfall of opportunities. How you
make use of them to be a better person will depend on you. I
believe no other college in AP invests so much time, money and
effort in the overall development of students. If not for BVRIT, I
wouldn't have developed this inquisitive nature and willingness
to participate which has brought made all the difference in me.
I believe there is learning everywhere. Not just in books. I get
surprised every time I think about how aptly they have given the
tag line 'Universal Learning' to the Vishnu group.
A continuous quest for knowledge should be the only goal for any
student. You never know how the dots are going to connect. So
keep learning and have fun while doing so.
If you feel that I can help you or guide you with any suggestions or
advice, feel free to drop me an email at pavan.kanteti9@gmail.com
with the subject BVRIT or ping me on Facebook. I'll always be
happy to help my alma mater.
Thank You! Good Luck!

BIGGER CAUSE
Oral health is a critical, but an overlooked component of overall health
and well-being. Dental diseases like cavities, gum diseases, irregular
teeth, oral cancer and injuries to dental structures affect a large number
of people and cause much discomfort and pain. Their impact is
therefore considerable, both at individual level and community level.
India has approximately 301 dental colleges with around 25,000
students graduating every year. With such a huge work force
theoretically all these diseases should have already been eradicated.
However, in reality, about 90 % of our population harbors one or more
dental diseases.
Oral health services in India are affected by problems of availability,
accessibility, affordability, acceptability and accommodation of
services. Majority of the Dentists tend to practice in urban and suburban
areas ignoring poor rural population with greater treatment
needs. These people need to travel far distances to get their dental
needs addressed. The fact that majority of these people survive on daily
wages; traveling and abstinence from work inflates the cost of dental
treatment and limits their affordability. Majority of these rural
inhabitants lack awareness about the dental diseases, reducing the
acceptability of such services even if readily provided. Accommodative
problems in terms of availability of dentist in emergency hours, waiting
period and ease of getting an appointment are other factors that need to
be considered for effective dental service
utilization
.
Hence to relieve pain and
suffering, restore and
maintain oral health,
and to address the
In order to create oral health awareness among the
collaboration with village level health workers like
Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs),
Anganwadi workers and Multi-purpose Health
trained to identify common oral diseases in a given
population and also to inform about the services provided at our
to work in association with these village level workers to appraise the
VANGUARDS
What can you expect from a student at the age of 17? Probably you would say
that this is an age where everything seems only for joy, an age which brings out
all the mischief in an individual, an age of dreams, an age of recklessness. But
the actions of BVRICE students spoke a different story. During Krishna
Pushkaras, duty of most of the police of Bhimavaram was shifted to
Vijayawada. 12 August onwards, from 4pm to 9pm every day, BVRICE students
controlled the traffic. With the T-shirts of Vishnu Logo, a whistle in their
mouth and their hand movements to control the traffic made everyone
astonished. They did a great job and were admired by everyone. Their job was
not limited to Bhimavaram. They even extended their duties working at Undi
and Akividu. By contributing to the welfare of the society these BVRICE
students proved themselves as responsible citizens. They have laid an
inspirational path for others.
THE
A QUARTERLY NEWS PUBLICATION FROM SRI VISHNU EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
WISE, is a unique program instituted only in BVRITH. Students are exposed to various
programming and scripting languages like C , R , Python ,Java, HTML, Bootstrap Javascript,
CSS, Android Programming, not merely the syntaxes of the language but we dive deep into the
applications of the language. Industry stalwarts guide the students. The professional
environment is preserved in every walk as we use platforms like GitHub and bitbucket to submit
our work and track our progress. The WISE program teaches us to be self initiated, professional
and being empathetic apart from various emerging technologies like Big Data, Cloud
Computing. The competitive spirits are held high throughout the training module as the quality
of training is monitored and mentored by process of elimination after every module depending
on students' performances and day-to-day assessment. The spirits of the class is maintained
high and a healthy competition prevails among everyone to top the assessment. We also learn
stress management and managing things because we have to balance the academics too. Thus
it's a domain which teaches us many skills.
In the present world it's really important to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical
approach and this is what exactly happens in BVRITH. We learn the concepts from the academic
classes and put them into action in WISE classes under the mentors. To evaluate our summer
module projects various experts are called from premier organizations and these esteemed
companies provide us with valuable suggestions and also give opportunity to become an intern
at their place. This way we not only learn technical skills but also are sound with soft skills
which many of the other students' lack. Through this platform we get opportunity to utilize our
WISEskills, build exciting products and finally contribute them to the society.
CHOICE
By Rishikha 3 CSE
Be it my college, be it my decisions, be it my friends, be it my career, be it my destiny…everything
revolved around one common denominator, my WISE Choice
It was exactly twenty three months ago I stepped into this unknown world of Computer Science.
Very little I knew about a new college that I got admission into to pursue my dreams. While all my
friends made it into their dream colleges like IITs, and some into large Universities like SRM, SP
Jain, et al I joined BVRIT College of Engineering for Women, a sure shot choice compared to my
dream colleges like CBIT, Vasavi and Sreenidhi after the Eamcet.
If I rewind to my early childhood dreams, I always wanted to be a doctor influenced, by my brother
who is a doctor and my father's constant encouragement. The fear of studying for many years and
the hard work needed to become a successful medical professional made me accept my next best
choice of joining for a career in engineering. Like most others in my class, Sri Chaitanya was a sure
shot formula for my dreams to come true to join a professional course.
My first year at BVRIT removed all my apprehensions that until then was only a hearsay from
friends and family assuring me that all will be well. Little did I realize that BVRIT was creating a
culture of its own, redefining how engineering is to be taught to undergrads like me. My
college had a visionary Chairman and a handpicked academic team that encouraged us girls
to think differently.
Women in Software Engineering [WISE] was a rage in my college. All my seniors where
talking about it as if a cult. Little did I know that this program would bring out the
entrepreneur in me. The theme behind this program is to bring a programming mind set
early on in the student. After my Eamcet I took some coding classes at NIIT near my home,
just keeping myself busy. But WISE was different. It was handled by a team of dedicated
professionals from the Industry who train at various corporate like eBay, ADP, Virtusa,
Broadridge, you name it. Thanks to our seniors the program was well tested. Every
semester, in addition to the regular syllabus, we had 30 hours of training and exposed to
various programming and scripting languages like C , R , Python ,Java, HTML, Bootstrap
Javascript, CSS, Android Programming, not merely the syntaxes of the language but we
dive deep into the applications of the language. During the summer breaks we get 50
hours of real industry project experience that we can convert to mini and major projects for
our academic program.
Wow, that was heavy metal! I then started talking about WISE to my friends in IITs and other
universities. While all have their experiences to share, nothing like this was offered to them early
on in their program. What made them special was that there was a legacy left behind by their
seniors that made them aspirational and thereby self initiated for shaping their future. BVRIT is just
a baby in the cradle, but already I never felt left behind from my friends in these IVY institutions,
what with WISE, IoT Makerspace and mentorship programs in large corporate like Microsoft and
Amazon. WISE actually bridged the technical divide and shaped me for what I am.
I was declared the Winner in “India Skills Competition – 2016” in IT Software Solutions for
business skill. The competition was held at New Delhi after a rigorous three tier elimination. There
were 300 students from all over India, and 20 were selected at the zonal level. At the National level
it was 5 and I was the lucky “only girl” winner. Wait… have I broken the glass ceiling that coding
was only the preserve of the boys! Here is Meher Rishika, the winner meeting the President of
India at Rajbhavan. I received the award from the diligent minister of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship, Mr. Rajiv Pratap Singh Rudy, and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. I should be
representing India at the “World Skills – 2017” at Abu Dhabi. The world is opening its doors to my
dreams.
I am proud to leave behind a legacy for my juniors to dream about, and my foot prints on the sands
of time for my alma mater.
