hypermill 

The path to setting up a subcontract machine 

shop couldn't have been more obscure than the 

tale of Ben Goodwin. Three years ago Ben was 

well remunerated for his dangerous skills as a 

deep sea welder and fabricator, but realising the 

danger and relatively short life expectancy, Ben 

quit the day job, bought a machining centre and 

set up BRG Developments. 

With little experience in a machine shop, the 

odds were stacked against Ben, who at the 

young age of 25 went out and bought a Hurco 3- 

axis VM10 machining centre and a suite of lowend 

CAM software. Taken on a massive learning 

curve, the small business owner is now making 

a huge success of his business venture and this is 

credit to Ben's vision, drive and also the 

subsequent help of OPEN MIND CAM 

software. As Ben explains: “I bought the Hurco 

and a 3-axis CAM package and even with my 

limited machining knowledge at that time, I 

quickly realised the first CAM Package I bought 

was holding me back. The 3-axis software was 

slow, laborious and despite my limited 

experience, I was getting frustrated with the tool 

paths. I needed to upgrade and hyperMILL ® was 

the only long-term choice for my business.” 

As an extremely ambitious business owner, 

Ben has his sights set upon building major

Günther Wirth (GW) is a manufacturer of PCD, 

solid carbide cutting tools and special tools for 

international manufacturing industry with its 

fleet of over 100 machine tools. For machining 

its ultra-precise special tools, the company 

depends upon sharpening specialist Vollmer 

and its QWD wire erosion machines and Vgrind 

160 grinding machine for solid carbide tools. 

Founded in 1981, GW has a factory in 

Balzheim, Germany, a production site in France 

and a branch in India, producing cutting tools 

around the clock with Vollmer technology. 

Each day, 12,000 tools leave the production 

site to service international customers in the 

aerospace, medical technology and 

turbine/mechanical engineering industries. 

“For over 35 years, we have been developing 

cutting tools from solid carbide and PCD. Our 

product range currently comprises around 

20,000 different standard tools. We are able to 

achieve this thanks to our state-of-the-art 

machine fleet, which we intend to expand 

further still,” says Gerhard Bailom, CEO of 

Günther Wirth Betriebs-GmbH. 

Since 1999, Günther Wirth has been using 

Vollmer's QWD eroding machines to 

manufacture PCD tools. Thanks to the 

contactless eroding process, the PCD can be 

removed precisely and the tool geometries can 

be individually adapted to customer 

requirements. The eroding wire also enables 

GW to achieve precise sharpening of complex 

tool geometries with minimal inside radii, such 

as that seen in multi-stage tools. 

The tool manufacturer has recently added 

the new Vollmer Vgrind 160 to its grinding 

machine fleet. The Vgrind is used for the 

development and production of solid carbide 

special tools. Equipped with an automated 

solution, the machine allows round the clock 

production.

Presented with the opportunity of supplying 

sawing equipment that would drastically 

reduce cutting times of even the very hardest 

stainless steel materials whilst 

simultaneously extending blade life, Prosaw 

rose to the challenge and after extensive 

research, developed a startling new sawing 

system.

Clamping devices are a particular 

specialty of ROHM and its latest RZM NC - 

centric clamping vice is ideal for 5-axis 

machining applications. 

It features high jaws and offers 

exceptional work piece clamping security 

without any additional substructures or

jaw inserts offering very high holding forces 

can be realized with a reduced force and low 

material loss. They also engage with the vice 

body and workpiece more cost-effectively 

because the ‘stamping and clamping’ 

associated with conventional jaw inserts is 

done in one operation – saving the stamping 

station completely.

Salvagnini are renowned for flexible 

automation and innovation in sheet metal. 

The latest development from the company 

who were the first to introduced Fiber Lasers 

to the market place back in 2008, is a patented 

lens cooling system on their flagship L5 

model Laser. Its proprietary cutting head is 

enriched by the new “Dry Cooling” feature, 

an innovative system that cools the optics 

without gas. This active refrigeration system 

monitors and controls the temperature of the 

focusing lens, extracting, only when 

necessary, the heat required to maintain a 

stable temperature. 

Dry cooling actually allows a further 

reduction of the operating costs of fiber laser 

systems: it reduces the consumption of 

nitrogen (the cost of which, depending on the 

country of installation, can be significant) 

and the cost of consumables, thanks to the 

increased service life of the optics.

Bray is the neW Brand from asquith Butler 

Asquith Butler has now bolstered its machine 

tool offering with the arrival of the new BRAY 

brand of machine tools. As a complement to 

the existing SAHOS line of high specification 

3 and 5-axis CNC machining centres, the 

addition of the BRAY product line-up will 

form the core of an alignment strategy to 

develop and maximise market penetration in 

the composite, pattern making, aerospace, 

light alloy machining sectors. 

The portfolio extension for Asquith Butler 

is the result of Czech machine tool 

manufacturer SAHOS being brought under 

the umbrella of BRAY (Blue Ray), which is a 

wholly owned subsidiary of Tool Trade 

S.R.O, a high-tech group of companies. The 

synergy will also develop opportunities for 

the company's fibre laser cutting machines. 

The re-structuring strategy of Tool Trade 

S.R.O presents an exciting opportunity for

offer the new products from BRAY plus a 

host of cosmetic and design improvements to

For sliding head turning shops that are 

running lights-out production, there's a

igus, the motion plastics specialist, has 

launched triflex TRLF.125, extending the 

TRLF family to include its largest 125mm 

nominal diameter e-chain, in addition to 

existing 65, 87.5 and 100mm internal 

diameter sizes. These TRLF energy chains are 

ideally suited for robotics and other 

applications that require electrical power 

cables, data cables and hoses to remain 

secure and protected during multi-axis 

movement. With this new 125mm size, even 

stiff or large hoses, or indeed large numbers 

of individual cables, can be inserted quickly 

and easily, reducing labour costs and 

assembly time. 

The mechanical design of TRLF has three 

internal chambers to separate power, data 

and hoses and ensure reliable guidance while 

avoiding damage during torsional 

movement. The design provides a defined 

bend radius and a maximum torsion of 

approximately +/- 200 degrees per metre of 

chain. 

To add or remove cables or hoses, each 

link can be opened manually or by 

screwdriver to facilitate rapid filling, 

modification or maintenance. As the TRLF 

system does not utilise any internal steel 

cables or spring elements, additional links 

can be easily added or removed via a simple

GET MORE FIBRE 

There is no denying the shift towards the 

use of laser cutters based on fibre, rather 

than CO2 technology, particularly for 

thinner sheet. The reasons are clear to see, 

as Irish subcontractor Inishowen 

Engineering can testify: the company 

reports an increase in laser cutting speed of 

20% when processing mild steel sheet up to 

4 mm thick using its new Bystronic fibre 

laser profiling centre. The machine is a 

direct replacement for the company’s 

previous 6kW CO2 model – also supplied 

by Bystronic. 

Michael McKinney, Inishowen 

Engineering’s managing director, says: “We 

have a policy of regularly replacing our 

production machines and when our 2007 

CO2 laser machine came up for renewal, 

fibre technology was the obvious choice. It 

not only cuts thinner material significantly 

faster, but costs less to run and service, so 

we will enjoy financial savings for years to 

come.” 

The power output rating of fibre laser 

cutters has been escalating rapidly since 

these machines first emerged on the 

marketplace, and this trend shows no sign 

of abating. For instance, to increase the 

speed with which sheet metal parts can be 

produced on ByStar laser cutting machines 

from Bystronic, the Swiss manufacturer has 

just introduced a new 10kW fibre laser, the 

previous maximum power being 6kW. 

Compared with the industry-standard 

4kW fibre laser, the 10kW source increases 

cutting speed by a factor of up to four. The 

greatest speed benefits are achieved in 

material thicknesses between 3 and 12mm, 

although the high power also enables 

productive cutting of sheet thicknesses up 

to 30mm. 

To integrate the 10kW fibre laser source 

optimally into the ByStar platform, 

Bystronic has produced a new cutting head. 

This incorporates a so-called ‘Spot Control’ 

function, which automatically shapes the 

laser beam and adapts the focal point. 

Another manufacturer highlighting the 

growing a preference for fibre laser 

solutions is Harlow-based Young & Woods, 

where a Platino fibre laser 2.0 from Prima 

Power has recently arrived. 

“We consider that investing in the best 

available machinery pays major dividends 

in terms of equipment reliability and both 

the quality and volume of our output,” 

explains director Alan Lee. “In addition to 

being extremely efficient and flexible, our 

new Platino fibre laser 2.0 laser profile 

machine is very easy to use. Also, we have 

been impressed by the range of materials 

that the machine is able to cut, which has 

opened-up several new markets.” 

Of course, to complement the extra 

speed offered by fibre-based machines, 

many shops are also opting for automation. 

A case in point can be seen at Staffordbased 

Alpha Manufacturing, a 100+ 

employee precision sheet metal fabricator, 

which has ordered a Trumpf TruLaser 3030 

fibre laser profiling centre to form a pivotal 

workstation in the company’s new £1 

million Stopa automated material handling 

and storage system. 

“The selection of the TruLaser 3030 fibre 

laser with loading automation was made 

based on the machine’s ability to handshake 

with Stopa and optimally integrate with the 

tower system, which made it our preferred 

choice over other machines we considered,” 

explains operations director Paul Clews. 

For over three decades, Stopa and 

Trumpf have been working together as 

global partners. At Alpha Manufacturing, 

the Stopa system will feed sheets to the new 

TruLaser 3030 fibre laser and existing 

Trumpf TruMatic 6000 punch-laser 

combination machine to help facilitate lean 

manufacturing, boost production capacity 

and promote lights-out operations. 

Investment levels are also high in the 

latest laser cutting machinery for tube. As 

The Laser Cutting Company in Sheffield, 

for instance, there has been significant 

investment in a new Yamazaki Mazak 3D 

Fabri Gear 400 tube laser cutter, the first 

machine of its kind to be sold in the UK. 

The 3D Fabri Gear 400 delivers the 

capacity to cut regular and irregular 3D 

structured sections, including H, I and L 

beams, as well as square and round pipes 

and tubes up to 8,000mm in length and 

406mm in diameter. Crucially, the new 

purchase has already helped accelerate 

cycle times by 30%. 

“Purchasing the Fabri Gear 400 was the 

next logical step for the business, and we 

are delighted to be the first company in the 

UK to offer such a high level of precision 

laser cutting,” says managing director Jon 

Day. “We were increasingly finding that the 

market was demanding the capability to 

machine larger, more complex work, along 

with bevelling and tapping, which is quite a 

specialist area.” 

Waterjet cutting is another profiling 

technology that continues to prove popular. 

At Oldham-based Hopwood Gear Ltd, for 

example, a twin-head waterjet machine 

from Kerf Developments has recently been 

installed. The machine was selected follow 

a decade of reliable performance from an 

oxy-propane gas cutting machine that was 

also supplied by Kerf. 

The evolving face of gear manufacture 

today sees Hopwood Gear producing more 

gears up to 50mm thick from materials such 

as aluminium, titanium, plastic, stainless 

and mild steels. For profiling these gears, 

Hopwood was using a subcontract profiling 

company at a cost of up to £5,000 each 

month. 

“We were spending a lot of money 

getting gear profiles cut, and the quality 

was indifferent,” states managing director 

Cory Hopwood. “The supply was regularly 

outside our tolerance band and the gears 

were often tapered where the waterjet 

wasn’t cutting at 90°. As soon as we heard 

Kerf had a waterjet machine, we spoke to 

them and they were confident the cut 

quality and precision of the Kerf Optima 

would solve all our issues. We trust Kerf 

implicitly, so we bought the Optima 420 

waterjet machine, and haven’t looked back 

since.” 

From an economic standpoint, 

Hopwood Gear estimates that £2,000 of the 

£5,000 monthly cost of profile cutting was 

actually material cost. So, by purchasing the 

Kerf Optima and acquiring the material 

direct from the stockholder, the company 

has reduced its subcontract costs by £3,000 

each month.

Accurate Laser Cutting has announced a 

£700,000 investment in the U.K’s first 10kW 

fiber laser. 

With its phenomenal processing speeds 

and newly improved processing capabilities, 

the 10kW Bystronic ByStar cutting system 

sets a new benchmark in laser cutting & 

represents their second major investment in a 

Bystronic fiber laser in eighteen months. 

The high performance equipment is 

capable of laser cutting aluminium & 

stainless steel up to 30mm thick, mild steel 

up to 25mm, 15mm brass & 12mm copper. It 

can also clean cut mild steel up to 15mm 

thick, which is beneficial to customers who 

require an oxidation free edge on their parts. 

“Nitro-cutting offers so much more to our 

customers.” explains company director Jon 

Till. “Previously, our ability to clean cut mild 

steel was limited to 3mm using our CO2 

equipment. To now have the capability of 

five times that thickness is an incredible 

improvement & a major benefit to customers

West Midlands manufacturing premises.

1.5m system. 

“Following the success of replacing our 

first CO2 laser with a 6kW fiber laser in 2015, 

the move to upgrade our second CO2 was 

inevitable.” explained company director 

Steve Morgan. As soon as we heard whispers 

of a 10kW fiber laser being developed by 

Bystronic, we knew it was only a matter of 

time before we had an all fiber line-up.” 

Its powerful 10kW output allows for

factory in Stirling is 60% faster than the 

company’s current laser, and uses 70% less 

power, it has claimed. 

Falcon says the reduction in energy usage 

will not only help to minimise the lifetime 

carbon footprint of its products, but will also 

ultimately allow for increased savings to be 

passed on to customers. 

It expects the investment to 

“dramatically” increase the speed of 

manufacture of its product line, as well as 

enhancing the cut quality, design flexibility 

and overall responsiveness to customers.. 

The Salvagnini L5 is a computercontrolled 

fibre laser, using special optical 

fibre to carry the beam. It allows for a more 

compact design and reduces the regular 

maintenance that traditional CO2 lasers 

require. 

The L5 can process a wider range of 

materials, including brass and copper, which 

will allow Falcon to be even more responsive 

to customer’s requirements. 

“The speed and flexibility of the new 

laser, coupled with handling automation, 

will bring direct benefits to both Falcon and 

our customers,” said operations director

etg reflects on 2016 and unveils exciting plans… 

The Engineering Technology Group (ETG) has 

released an overview of its sales performance in 

2016 while providing details of what it 

describes as ‘Phase Two’ of a reorganisation 

following an appraisal of the business after the 

management buy-out (MBO) 18 months ago. 

“It has been a challenging year dominated 

by Brexit related uncertainty but one that we 

have ultimately come out of very well,” 

explains Group Managing Director Martin 

Doyle. 

“Like many we experienced a lull in early 

and mid-summer. I think buyers were simply 

waiting to see what happened after the 

referendum but soon after, when things started 

to return to something like normality, we saw 

an upturn as confidence returned. Obviously as

Gewefa UK will one of a number of invited 

suppliers to be present at the forthcoming 

Hurco Europe 2016 Open House. 

The event, being held on Tuesday 6th and 

Wednesday 7th December at Hurco’s 

showroom in High Wycombe, will feature 9 

Hurco machine tools in full operational mode 

with a range of key suppliers supporting them 

in the Supplier Village. 

Gewefa’s expertise in all aspects of

ETG has also announced the completion of 

the second phase of a re-structure of the 

business by consolidating the Capital 

Equipment Division and the Operations 

Division under one roof as it continues to focus 

on efficiencies and customer care. 

From January 2017, both will now be located 

on the Wellesbourne site in Warwickshire with 

the previous Southam headquarters building 

being vacated. The Permanent Trade Show will 

be moved in part to Wellesbourne but integral 

to creating wider awareness of ETG and its 

products, Martin Doyle has also announced 

first details of a network of permanent machine 

displays located around the UK. 

“The needs of manufacturers in geographic 

areas are quite different and we will be 

reflecting this in the type of demonstrations we 

will be creating,” he explains. 

“We plan to be located on the South Coast 

and in the South West, Midlands, North West 

and North East. Engineering differs in these 

regions – aerospace, automotive, oil and gas - 

and our choice of demonstration machines will 

reflect this. Not forgetting of course the allimportant 

general sub contract sector that is still 

a major part of what we offer. 

Martin Doyle has announced that ETG is 

already in the process of signing an exclusive 

deal with the largest apprenticeship provider in 

the UK. It is also establishing relationships with 

likeminded associates within the industry to 

create up to half a dozen permanent regional 

demonstration facilities which will also act as a 

focus for customer training hubs and technical 

apprentice schools. 

“A key part of what we offer at ETG relates 

to maintaining on-going relationships with 

customers,” adds Martin. “Training support is 

all important and we will be offering this via 

our regional hubs, embracing controls and 

machine operation and CAD/CAM expertise, 

replicating real time and educational scenarios. 

“We approach 2017 with optimism and 

some very exciting plans,” he concludes. “We 

are an optimistic company and look forward to 

converting our plans into reality in the coming 

12 months,” he concludes.

new lights shine on citizen’s 

latest technology 

Citizen Machinery has replaced its showroom 

lighting with the latest Waldmann Lighting 

Acaneo Highbay Luminaire LED system that 

not only provides glare-free lighting across the 

whole working area but also has enabled the 

previous nine 400 watt units to be replaced with 

energy saving 160 watt LEDs. In addition, the 

new system will reduce maintenance costs with 

an LED life of 60,000 hours as against the 

previous mercury based system which involved 

annual replacement. 

Said Managing Director Geoff Bryant: 

“Waldmann is based about a mile from our 

offices in Bushey and is already a supplier to 

Citizen for its machine lighting. The company 

had taken a stand at MACH 2016 at the NEC in 

April when I recognised the name as I walked 

past. This coincided with our plans to upgrade 

our air conditioning and lighting at our 

headquarters and led to quotations and order 

placement very soon after the show.” 

The Highbay units are flush fitted to the 8 m 

high ceiling of the showroom and as 

Waldmann’s Managing Director Peter Young 

said: “The massive advantage of the Acaneo 

system is that once installed you never really 

notice it. It is bright, but with the patented lens 

arrangement it is virtually free from shadow 

and glare.” 

To this Citizen’s Sales Director Darren 

Wilkins added: “This is ideal in a working 

environment such as when machines are being 

set however, we have already noticed how 

customers seem more relaxed and are more 

easily able to focus on what is being 

demonstrated and discussed.” 

Further advantages of the system are that if 

power is interrupted or switched–off the system 

instantly returns to the normal lighting output. 

Payback is predicted to be achieved in around 

two years due to lower consumption and the 

considerable reduction in service demands.
