It’s said that life has a funny way of happening when you aren’t looking and 

I can personally attest to that since, for me, one such “happening” occurred 

Christmas Day of 2010. As I happily walked into a room of holiday revelers at a 

friends home, I was handed a glass of white wine. I began to look for my Host 

and as I stepped down into the large living room and moved into the festive 

group, I noticed and passed one of her other guests, a tall blonde with a warm 

smile. Suddenly, from behind me I heard “Hey Kate.. you know everyone! Know 

anyone who edits books? Alexis has a dynamite story to tell and needs an Editor!” 

My friend, Joey English (who actually DOES know everyone!) hugged me and 

taking my arm, turned me around to face…“The Blonde”! 

Indeed “warm”, SHE also hugged me as Joey enthusiastically introduced us. They 

were both then delighted when I answered Joey’s question with “An Editor? Yes, 

I certainly do. ME!” I often edited with my best friend of many years, Barbara 

McClure, Publisher and Editor of the “Desert Woman” magazine. 

Cutting to the chase, a month later, Barbara and I were both committed to 

why she wrote such a personal commentary.

only a few months before. 

Little did any of us know 

the emotional adventure 

the three of us were 

about to take together. 

(Apparently, based on the 

over 100 5 star reviews on 

Amazon, the reader takes 

the same kind of “ride!”) 

Alexis was (and is…) an 

excellent writer and the 

book had been written 

intimately from her very 

core. The details were 

myriad and the tale, though 

a love story for the ages, 

was playful and intimate 

one minute, yet painful and 

heart tugging the next. It 

was clear that the book 

was not just Joi’s story, but 

Alex’s story as well. 

Alexis recently did a written 

interview for the Huffington 

Post that shares intimately 

“After I lost Joi,” Alex wrote, “I could not stop thinking of her. I had tapes running 

in my head over and over because I didn’t want to lose one moment I’d had with her. As 

years passed, I finally felt I had to put it down on paper so that I could continue my life. I 

knew Joi would want me to do that.” 

“She’d been so happy and so proud of our relationship. One night at “Ye Little Club” in 

Beverly Hills, we were watching Joan Rivers (a good friend of hers) and she had put us at 

a table right in front of the stage. That night Joan gave a shout out to Joi and the whole 

room exploded in applause. Joi, always gracious and appreciative of her fans, stood and 

smiled. Then, knowing she was being watched by everyone in the room, Joi held my hand 

all night! I was always uncomfortable for her because I was afraid it would hurt her in the 

business, but, in some way, she was so proud of our love, she wanted to tell the world, 

whatever the cost. 

Well, now, the book has allowed this to happen. I know she would be proud of me. Thru 

this book I’m able to keep her memory alive and now she’s a bigger star than she ever 

was…something she always wanted and deserved. Most of all though, I believe Joi would 

want me to tell the story of why she died so young. I know she would want people to 

know the horrors of injectable silicone. She was only 43. She waited so long for real love 

and then we only had four years together. She would be devastated to hear about how 

popular the dangerous and irresponsible practice of injecting silicone directly into our 

bodies has become once more.” 

“Joi Lansing: a Body to Die For” is a title that can be read two different ways. Sadly, it 

turned out to be prophetic.

FGI Raises $7475 for Palm Springs Animal Shelter with Fashion Forward Event

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Third 

Annual Fashion Group International Palm Springs 

Luncheon and Fashion Show. It was an afternoon of 

food, fashion, and cocktails at Steve and Joelle Stanbridge’s 

beautiful estate in Palm Springs. This year 

proceeds benefited the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, 

the only public shelter operating under a no-kill philosophy 

in the Coachella Valley. 

The benefit was hosted by the wonderful philanthropic 

power-couple, Joelle and Steve Stanbridge, with 

event partner, Jack Williams. 

We stepped out of the complimentary valet parking 

and entered under a sun shielded canopy at the 

entrance of the party where loving dogs in need of 

homes were available for adoption, attended by smiling 

volunteers of Friends of the Palm Springs Animal 

Shelter. DJ Blake Master generously donated his time 

and pumped out festive music for a fabulous sit down 

brunch and style show. 

The tasty buffet luncheon was packed with a very 

stylish crowd. This is a highly anticipated annual party. 

In Joelle Standbridge style, tables were adorned 

in bubblegum pink table-clothes (Her favorite color is 

pink). Pink and gold silk fans placed by every guest 

were gently and playfully waving providing a visual 

flutter of whimsy across the scene. Clear lucite Veuve 

Clicquot buckets with an iced magnum of French 

rosé, another one of Joelle’s favorites, were the 

centerpieces, available for $75 a piece, proceeds of 

which were donated towards the animal shelter. 

Emmy-nominated actress, singer, entertainer, and 

philanthropist, Bobbie Eakes presented her latest 

resort wear collection with a retro feel. Most know 

Bobbie from All My Children, and The Bold & The 

Beautiful. She also has retail fashions which can be 

found at the Ritz-Carlton gift shop in Rancho Mirage. 

Her fashion line is Desigual, a funky fashion forward 

collection that Bobbie represents from Spain. Bobbie 

says the “Pucci-esque” patterns and colors in 

the clothes remind her of the midcentury modern era. 

The line is a natural fit for the Palm Springs area. 

Next, the runway blossomed with fashionable menswear 

shown by Robert Damour from Highest Form 

Boutique located at the shops at Thirteen Forty Five, 

668 North Palm Canyon in Palm Springs. Highest 

Form was created under a simple yet relatively unseen 

concept. Perfect in it’s imperfection. All of the 

products are made in the USA, and handcrafted in 

California. Another perfect fit for the Palm Springs 

lifestyle! 

The handful of beautiful female and male models generously 

donated their time. And they made it fun too. 

In the finale, all the hot looking men jumped into the 

pool to the music, ‘It’s Raining Men’. Then the sculpted 

men rose to all the lovely ladies models holding 

housecoats for them as they emerged from the modern 

pool!

Joelle wore a one-of-a-kind dress designed by Fedor

Ben Perdereau’s store in Palm Springs, Who’s Next. 

“Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter is a cause 

dear to my heart,” said Joelle. “I have two adopted animals. 

One from PS Animal Shelter and one from Loving 

All Animals. My motto is “Adopt, not shop!” 

Although the shelter and animal care is the largest 

expense, the Palm Springs Animal Shelter’s outreach 

and retention programs are expanding rapidly. Their 

additional programs include low cost adoptions, low/ 

no cost spay and neuter clinics, TNR (trap-neuterreturn) 

community cats, pet food bank, humane education, 

and public vaccine clinics. The shelter takes 

more than money donations. They accept food, beds, 

toys, clothing and blankets and other pet suppies. If 

you have anything to donate and want to know if it is

Joelle urges people to become more aware of adopting 

pets from various shelters in the Desert area. 

“People don’t realize it is more than cats and dogs. 

Chihuahuas and pit bulls are the number one animals 

needing loving homes, but there are other animals as 

well. Many shelters have chickens, reptiles, all kinds 

of animals. And many provide emergency care to 

strays who have been hit by vehicles or have other 

health crises”, said Joelle. “Hopefully this event will 

help raise awareness about the overpopulation of animal 

in shelters.”

Have you ever considered the biology behind pain and inflammation, 

fat accumulation and premature aging? Is it possible to eliminate pain, 

stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise, and reverse the signs 

of aging without toxic, often-addictive prescription medications, invasive 

surgery or downtime? 

In order to answer these questions, let’s explore the root cause of 

these conditions and discuss the natural alternatives that are available 

at a fraction of the cost of toxic drugs, fat reduction programs and skin 

rejuvenation options. 

In a recent article published on the website thefix.com, studies have 

shown that more Americans today use painkillers than tobacco. Americans 

consume 99% of the global supply of hydrocodone and 80% of 

the global opioid supply according to a September 2016 article by Mc- 

Carton Ackerman. 

A new report highlights just how prevalent prescription painkiller use 

has become in the United States. These findings came from the Substance 

Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). 

The report shows that 38% of Americans used prescription painkillers 

in 2015, while 31% used cigarettes, cigars or smokeless tobacco. 

people misused prescription painkillers. SAMHSA’s definition of misuse 

includes any use of painkillers in a manner not as directed by a doctor— 

which can range from taking these substances at higher doses or longer 

periods of time than recommended, to using them for the sole purpose of 

getting high. 

Pharmaceutical companies have been shown to play a direct role in this 

widespread use. A joint investigation released this month by the Center 

for Public Integrity and the Associated Press revealed that pro-painkiller 

groups outspend groups pushing for painkiller restrictions by 200 to 1. 

Some of these companies have even engaged in illegal behavior to 

promote sales of their drugs. Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, 

pleaded guilty in 2007 to misleading doctors and regulators about the 

drug’s high potential for abuse and addiction. 

Earlier this year, the CDC released new guidelines regarding painkillers in 

response to excessive dispensing of them. Its data showed that doctors 

wrote 82.5 opioid prescriptions per 100 people in 2012, enough for every 

American adult to have their own bottle. 

Lets face it. We are a nation of pill popping, fast food eating, under-nourished 

and under-hydrated humans on the planet. It’s no wonder we age 

rapidly, have the highest rate of diabetes, obesity and pain medication 

addiction than any other country. 

In my opinion the reason for this is a lack of awareness, education and 

adequate nutrition. It’s not the candles on a birthday cake that determine 

how you feel on the inside and look on the outside. Understanding how 

the body works and getting the essential hydration, vitamins, minerals 

and enzymes is what determines the body’s internal chemistry, pain 

levels and external age. That chemistry dictates, in large part, the quality 

and resiliency of virtually every cell and organ in your body. There are 

up to 37,000,000,000,000 cells (yes, 37 trillion!) in the human body. For 

the most part, your cells, body parts, bones, hair, skin and organs are all 

replaced several times throughout your lifetime. This process is called 

regenerative cell replacement. 

All ailments, afflictions and/or diseases can all be traced back to starving 

your cells of healthy replacement materials. Minerals, vitamins and 

enzymes are essential for the rebuilding and/or replacing of old and damaged 

cells and organs. For example, your skin is the largest organ in the 

body and is completely replaced cell by cell every 30-35 days, taste buds 

every 10 days, liver every six weeks. Your bones are replaced every 

7-10 years and heart replaced cell by cell every 20 years. 

Those numbers are especially noteworthy because, according to the 

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more people died 

from prescription painkillers than homicide in 2014. CDC data has also 

found that opioid overdose deaths climbed from about 5,500 in 2002 to 

just over 12,000 in 2014. 

The widespread use of prescription painkillers in the U.S. is no longer 

a secret. The new SAMSHA report did not indicate what percentage of

injury or disease. Old and worn out cells are discarded and replaced with 

new cells. When cells don’t get the right food and nutrients from your diet 

they become weak, damaged and die prematurely. If you don’t change 

your diet and get proper hydration, the new cells will be just as weak as 

the old ones.

Think of it this way, if you are building a house and you choose the 

cheapest, weakest building materials to build your new home, how long 

do you think your home will last? Your body is the same way. The food 

and water you consume determines the strength and resiliency of every 

cell, connective tissue in your body. As a result, your eating habits are a 

major determinant in how quickly you begin to see and feel the effects 

of aging and inflammation. Each cell in your body needs vital vitamins, 

minerals and enzymes to replace disease-resistant cells. Depriving your 

body of these essential repair materials will weaken your immune system, 

cause inflammation and pain, and show signs of premature aging at an 

alarming rate. 

Toxins also contribute to a weak immune system and inflammation greatly 

affects the appearance of the skin. The typical American diet today 

includes too many acidic, toxic foods that undermine skin, nail and hair 

health. Cellular inflammation (or micro-inflammation) breaks down the 

skin cells, the supply of collagen, destroys elasticity and eventually results 

in pain in joints, sagging skin and wrinkles. Highly processed foods, 

common in our fast food diets, can hasten aging by creating protein-like 

substances called peptides and neuropeptides that increase this inflammatory

these enzymes attack and destroy collagen connective tissue in are 

joints, hair, skin and nails causing us to age rapidly and experience pain

Unfortunately, aging and pain is inevitable; however, the rate of aging and 

pain can be dramatically slowed and/or reversed with proper diet, hydration 

and cold therapy also called Cryotherapy. The type of aging I reference 

is not chronological but cellular, called biological aging. In other 

word, we age from the inside out, one cell at a time. 

Mitochondria are the fuel factories in our cells that convert the food we 

eat into energy. When mitochondria malfunction, cells die. How well we 

age, including our vulnerability to pain, inflammation and disease, is due 

in part to how healthy our mitochondria are. Recent studies have linked 

oxidative stress — the accumulation of free radicals in the cell — and 

genetic defects in mitochondria with accelerated inflammation and premature 

aging. 

What causes mitochondria to self-destruct? Systemic inflammation in the 

body. A common cause of inflammation is a high sugar diet. Too much 

sugar or high-glycemic food ultimately leads to a metabolic process 

called glycation (or glycosylation) in which sugar molecules in the blood 

bond to proteins and DNA which, over time, become chemically modified. 

These new bonded proteins are called AGE’s, or Advanced Glycation 

End Products. AGEs create unnatural cross-links with collagen proteins. 

This changes their shape, flexibility, elasticity and function. The result is 

inflammation, pain and premature aging. What’s more, the presence of 

AGEs generates additional inflammation. Inflammation and glycation are 

two related reactions that impact the body’s natural state of balance and 

manifest themselves as aging throughout the body’s organ systems but 

most visibly in the skin.

So what prompts the immune system to respond like this? Scientists 

claim they have evidence that explains why a clean diet, exercise, stress 

reduction and cold therapy can reverse the aging effects of a poor diet 

and sedentary lifestyle. Based on a small, exploratory study, researchers 

say these good habits work by preventing chromosomes and collagen in 

our bodies from unraveling. Basically, they assert that healthy living and 

cold therapy can reverse the effects of aging on a genetic level. It relates 

to the little caps on our chromosomes called telomeres. They work like 

the plastic tips of shoelaces to protect the ends of chromosomes which 

are the strings of genes in the heart of every cell that tell it what to do. 

Without telomeres, our cells would lose the ability to divide and would 

quickly die off. 

Scientists have been fascinated by telomeres for several decades. In 

2009, Elizabeth Blackburn, an author of the new study, shared a Nobel 

Prize for pioneering work in the field. As people and other animals age, 

their telomeres get shorter and shorter — a well-grounded observation 

that some scientists think is not only a marker of aging but a fundamental 

driver of senescence, or more commonly known as senility. Smoking 

causes your telomeres to shorten as does emotional stress and the lack 

of exercise. The shorter the telomere is, the greater the risk of chronic 

diseases and a shorter lifespan. 

Those in the study group that included a whole grain-based, low-fat and 

plant-based diet low in refined carbohydrates and sugar, walked for a half 

an hour a day. Doing various stress management techniques, including 

yoga and meditation for an hour a day and spending more time with their 

loved ones, including family and friends, found over time that the length 

of the telomeres increased 10%. Those in the study group that did not 

participate in that lifestyle showed a 3% decrease in the length of the 

telomeres over a 5-year period. Proof positive that poor diet and lack of 

exercise can, in fact, accelerate the aging process at the cellular level. 

The good news is that you can reverse this effect. Your body is an amazing 

and healing organism. All it wants to do is heal, thrive and survive. 

No matter how old you are – once you understand what robs your body of 

its health and vitality, and what to do about it, you are well on your way to 

looking and feeling much younger. 

The inspiration of writing my best selling anti-aging book Juice Your Way 

Back 10 Years and opening the first cryotherapy center in Coachella Valley 

came from my obsession of curiosity at an early age. I often say I was 

born with OCD (Obsessive Curiosity Disorder). My poor mom had to field 

a 1000 “why” questions each day. I was obsessed on how things worked.

In my early teens I would often come home early from school and, before 

my mom came home from work, take apart my motorcycle in my room 

or all the appliances to figure out how they worked and then quickly put 

them back together before my mom came home. She was not to happy, 

to say the least. 

In my late teens, I started bodybuilding, putting the same amount of 

learning and curiosity on how appliances worked to how my body worked, 

to make it healthier, stronger and younger. Due to my drive and OCD, I 

later became a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Tri-Athlete, Serial Entrepreneur, 

Trainer, Motivational Speaker and Fitness Enthusiast over the next 

30 years. 

I would often observe many individuals who have struggled to lose weight 

and get in shape. If they were successful at achieving their weight loss 

goal, they would often gain it back, look sick, tired and appear older than 

their actual age. That’s when it hit me. “There’s got to be a better way 

to lose weight, get in shape, keep it off and reverse the signs of aging 

all at the same time. Fast-forward several years later. After extensive 

research on what makes us age, gain weight, get sick and appear older 

than we are and after personally experimenting with several types of antiaging 

therapies, super foods, herbal blends and juice recipes, Juice Your

The root cause of aging and pain is from poor diet, inflammation, lack of 

proper hydration and decelerated collagen production. Collagen is the 

most abundant protein in the body. It’s responsible for keeping our skin 

supple and connective tissues strong and flexible. In addition to collagen 

destruction, as we age, the cells in our body that regenerate themselves 

every second of every day are not producing as many new cells as it 

once was when we were younger. The reason for this is that the cells 

become slower and weaker due to lack of energy needed to produce 

replacement cells. Fibroblast cells are the primary cells in our bodies 

that are responsible for producing many different forms of collagen (from 

elastin to connective tissue). When a fibroblast cell is young, it’s very

IS CRYOTHERAPY SAFE? 

Yes. Cryotherapy has been used for the past 3 decades without any 

severe adverse reaction recorded. The nitrogen being used to cool in the 

single-person Cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we 

breathe (actually 78% of it). When in the Cryosauna, the client breathes 

ambient air. In a recent safety evaluation, we have used a pulse oximeter 

to record blood oxygen saturation in more than 30 clients using the single 

person chamber and found no drop in blood oxygen saturation throughout 

the treatment. For added safety, chambers are also equipped with an 

oxygen monitor at the level of the mouth which will shut off the nitrogen 

supply should the oxygen concentration drop by 0.5%. In order to protect 

the more temperature-sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, clients 

wear dry socks, slippers, and gloves, which we provide. In the walk-in 

chamber, clients also have to wear a facemask (to protect the nose and 

prevent the inhalation of cold air), as well as earmuffs or a hat covering 

the ears. 

Whole body Cryotherapy is very well tolerated and has minimal risk 

which are fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure by up to 10 

points systemically (this effect reverses after the end of the procedure, 

as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reaction to extreme 

cold (rare), redness and skin burns (only if exposed to low temperatures 

longer than recommended). 

HOW DO YOU ELIMINATE FAT WITH CRYOTHERAPY? 

Recently scientists noticed by accident that children that were sucking 

on popsicles often would have dimples or checks that were sunken in 

slightly. This is what caused them to realize that fat freezes under certain 

temperatures. Cryoshaping is the process of freezing unwanted fat that is

your protective clothing is on, you will be escorted to the cryo room and 

more instructions will be given. Privacy is very important to us! We will 

only see your face, the rest of your body will be in the cryosauna. Music

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING OR WEAR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT?

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GO TO RECEIVE THE BEST RESULTS? 

We recommend that our patients do their first 10 sessions within 30 days 

then, based on what they hope to achieve or continue to experience, decide 

how often they would like to return. Many benefits such as a rush of 

endorphins and better sleep can be experienced as early as the first session; 

however, maximum results are obtained with repeated treatments. 

For optimum results, I recommend 2-3 times each week. It is safe for you 

to do two sessions per day but it is only recommended for those in heavy
