I pray
that your
family is
as excited
about
the upcoming
New Year,
as we are here at FEAST! You
may have had a great 2016;
even so, we hope you will
begin 2017 with a renewed
vigor and excitement for your
journey of parent directed
education!
As you reflect on where
you have been, January is a
great time to discuss and give
thanks on how God brought
you into home schooling.
Looking forward to the programs
to come, and where
you are headed, I want to
remind you that FEAST has
been with you all the way. We
will be here to help you make
2017 your strongest home
school year ever. Whether
you have been home schooling
for a week or a decade, we
have gathered ideas, tips and
research to help encourage
your children while home
schooling. Come by and see
our beautiful remodeled
bookstore anytime, Monday
Serving Him by serving you!
through Thursday from 10am
to 5pm and see how we can
help! FEAST has a staff that is
called to serve and we’ll be
here to share a laugh with
you, cheer you on when you
need a good word, or even
be the shoulder during those
tough times.
How do we keep doing
what we do? The answer is
simple: The prayers and financial
support from people just
like you. Every time you give
a monthly donation, shop at
the FEAST bookstore, take
part in co-op or sports, or participate
in fundraising events,
you are helping FEAST serve
others. We know that not everyone
has the money to donate,
but for those who do, it
makes it possible for FEAST to
operate efficiently and even
offer new programs to the
home schooling community.
Keeping FEAST sustainable
through monthly donations
of any size helps us continue
to invest in the spiritual,
emotional, and educational
life of each family to whom
we minister. If FEAST has
been a blessing to your family,
will you help by becoming
a monthly donor?
“But I have trusted in Thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation.”
Psalms 13:5
Throughout history, brave souls have been blazing new trails across Texas: American Indians, Spanish explorers,
Catholic missionaries, French soldiers, colonial entrepreneurs and Texas cattlemen. These trailblazers opened the
way for new settlers to populate the land of Tejas, the Republic and the state of Texas. But who would continue to
keep these roads open and safe for those traveling on them? It was a new type of pioneer who came to open the
territories of Texas and protect those who followed. It was the US Army. During the 1800s, the US Army established
and manned well over 40 forts and camps along the westward-moving frontier. In 1856 alone, 25% of the troops in
the US Army were based in Texas. Able soldiers like Benjamin H. Grierson and Ranald S. Mackenzie were on the Texas
frontier protecting settlers and connecting outposts of civilization in the unsettled West. These soldiers came to
an untamed land that was inhospitable, harsh and dangerous. They were challenged by the weather, the vast territory
and the unknown. They scouted for water in the desert, built their forts with adobe, native wood and stone,
strung telegraph lines, and battled a relentless war against the American Indians who fought to protect their way
of life. By the time the last of these forts closed, over 75,000 soldiers had come to the Texas frontier. Some were
famous like Phillip Sheraton. Some were unknown like the hundreds of immigrants looking for a stake in their new
country. But they all came to do their job...to tame the Texas frontier.
Help us “Stuff the Truck!”
Saturday, February 18, 2017
10am – 2pm at FEAST
FEAST is excited to have been chosen as a host for the “Partners for Good” Goodwill
Donation Drive! Goodwill will donate $1,000 for every truck we “Stuff” full of
good reusable donations. This is GREAT news for us because the collection can
start now! Please tell your friends and bring all of your gently used articles to
FEAST, and we will store them until the big day; or bring them day of and join the
fun as you help us stuff the truck! Items to donate: all kinds of clothing, blankets,
books, electronics, furniture, games, toys, and so much more!
FEAST appreciates your donations; the publicity is great for us and for Goodwill, so this drive is always a win-win
event. You get rid of unwanted items, and we raise money to help fund our programs at FEAST. Likewise, these
drives help Goodwill toward their goal of helping the community of un- and under-employed receive education
programs and services that will assist them in finding better jobs and building careers. Let’s bring some order to
our lives and pitch in and support two great organizations!
About Our Program
Our FREE Civics class meets each month at FEAST. The
FEAST Civics Coordinator, Gale Sayers, spends many
months handling arrangements with local and state
politicians and government and civic leaders in preparation
for our free Civics Classes. Students learn the
proper way to dress and conduct themselves for political
or professional events. Please honor our guests
by coming in business casual attire. No shorts. We ask
that skirts or dresses be worn to knee length with no
Whole families are invited! There are no age limits,
and parents/grandparents do attend with the children.
Students must have at least one parent/adult in attendance
unless a special arrangement has been made.
Attendance is open to all. Your faithful participation
will ensure the success of these events,so please make
it a priority on your family’s calendar to be physically
present. No writing is required, but personal notes are
strongly encouraged. No tests are given. Come out and
enjoy a very interactive time with our guests.
The mob has murdered an FBI informant, and the local brass has pulled out all the stops to find the guilty party. Accordingly,
they have summoned a Federal Grand Jury to investigate the evidence and issue an indictment for murder.
The problem is that there are three possible suspects. Each had opportunity, means, and possibly a motive, so whom
do they take to trial? That is your job. The Generation Joshua iObject teen track places you, the student, in the seat
of one of the most powerful citizen judicial roles in the country, a federal Grand Jury. Don’t miss being a part of this
exciting Generation Joshua (GenJ) Grand Jury simulation.
In order to book the event with GenJ, FEAST must have a minimum of 25
committed students registered by January 31.
NOTE: If you cannot make full payment at the time of registration, but are committed to attend,
World-Proof the Child by Doug Flanders
Protecting our children is one of the primary jobs of parenthood, and the list of
dangers seems to be growing exponentially.
* There is BPA in your bottled water; there are hormones in your meat.
* There are predators on the Internet and cyber-bullies on social media.
* There are addictive drugs and addictive video games.
* There are terrorists hijacking our planes and the TSA hijacking our dignity.
It makes you long for the days when seesaws and merry-go-rounds were still allowed
on playgrounds.
The fact is that new dangers are popping up every day, and it is impossible
for even the most vigilant parents to keep up with them all. That
doesn’t mean you can’t protect your children. It just means that doing
so will become increasingly complex and require some added intentionality.
There are three general principles that can help guide the process:
1. SET THE EXAMPLE. A culture of safety — whether at work
or at home — starts at the top. If you want your kids to wear helmets
when they ride bicycles, then you probably should, too. Same rule
goes for seatbelts, overeating, cigarettes, alcohol, or anything else.
Most values are “caught” not “taught.”
“Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works,
and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,
and sound speech that cannot be condemned…” Titus 2:7-8 (ESV)
2. SET THE STANDARD. Talk
with your kids. Point out the dangers
as you become aware of them.
Let them know what your expectations
are. Set a curfew. Curfews
aren’t tyranny; they are parents
showing that they care! Then enforce
the standards you have established.
A rule that isn’t enforced is
no rule at all.
“Train up a child
in the way he should go;
even when he is old
he will not depart from it.”
– Proverbs 22:6 (NASB)
3. SET THEM FREE. The ultimate goal of parenting isn’t to have large children, but to have fully functioning
adults. The only way to achieve that goal is to gradually shift responsibility from your shoulders to theirs. This
is probably the hardest, but most important, part of the whole process. You will never be able to make enough
rules to protect your children. They must internalize safety consciousness themselves. They must make it their
own. Making it their own often means making mistakes. It can be hard to watch as our children attend the
school of hard-knocks, but sometimes “experience is the best teacher.”
“When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child;
when I became a man, I did away with childish things.” – 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NASB)
The temptation is to simply be “helicopter parents” — ones that are always hovering, always micro-managing, always
trying to smooth the way and make the decisions and manipulate the circumstances — but that is a fool’s game. No
parent can child-proof the world. A parent’s job is to world-proof the child.
FEAST
STANDARDIZED
ACHIEVEMENT TESTING
By Jeanine Martin, FEAST Test Administrator
Every spring, FEAST conducts standardized
achievement testing for students in 4th
grade and up. It is not a “high-stakes” testing
atmosphere, so no child should ever feel anxious
about being labeled a failure. The main purpose
of the test is to help you assess your home
schooled children’s strengths and weaknesses.
Only parents receive the results.
If the results are great, feel free to maintain your
home school program as is. Or, if your child needs
additional challenge, consider using gifted programs
like Duke TIP. If the results are worse than
expected, new curriculum or different teaching
methods may be needed. Parents may also want
to consider further testing for dyslexia or dyscalculia
when scores are extremely low.
Tests are merely another tool in our home
school arsenal. Do not worry about whether or
not your child tends to test well or poorly. The results
are only meant to help your home school.
Standardized Achievement Testing
at FEAST
May 1 & May 3, 8:30am – 1pm
$75 per child
Registration deadline is March 17, 2017
FEAST is happy to offer the home school community
standardized achievement testing again this
year. The state of Texas does not require home
schoolers to test their children. FEAST offers this
as a service for students in grades 4 – 12. Space is
very limited, and registration will be accepted on
a first come/first registered basis. NOTE: No late
registrations will be accepted, and there are no refunds
after registration has closed.
Why take a standardized achievement test?
Achievement tests help teachers and students
determine the level of knowledge
that has been acquired in
their education. It helps teachers/parents
determine if
there are subjects that
may need more attention
Parents, are you looking for fun physical education
program for children ages 5 -12? Why not try Soccer?
FEAST and Skyhawks will be offering an 8 week Soccer
Program at FEAST. Soccer is a fun and active sport that
builds thinking skills, as well as a healthy body. The mix
of sprinting with endurance running develops long and
short muscle fibers and also aerobic as well as anaerobic
capabilities. Playing soccer improves flexibility, cardiovascular
capability, body composition (lowering the percentage
of body fat while increasing muscle mass) and does
not jar the body in the way that other sports do. Body
type isn’t as important as with other sports and working
as a team builds social skills and self-confidence.
The Skyhawks have taught over 2 million boys and girls
and are a nationally recognized, Family Choice Award
winning, standard for excellence. Their coaches are highly
motivated and skilled in their sports area and are cleared
through a national criminal background check, FBI fingerprints,
CPR & First Aid certification, with both classroom
and field training.
To learn more about the Skyhawks visit www.skyhawks.
com. Registration will open January 9, 2017.
Patriots
SPORTS
From Your
Athletic Director,
Scott Lane
Happy New Year! We at FEAST hope and pray that you had a Merry Christmas
and a happy holiday season.
We have a wealth of sports offerings ongoing this winter or about to start
this spring.
Our boy’s High School Soccer is in the midst of their season. Basketball is
also well into their season with eight strong teams competing. Our varsity
boys won both tournaments they played in during the month of December.
Golf middle school and high school players received professional instruction
from our partners at the “First Tee” during the fall. We will have a kick off
meeting for the spring tournament schedules for both high school and middle school golf in mid to late January. Pay attention
to FEAST eblasts for that date and time. Anyone wishing to join this fine instructional program is welcome to do so. Contact us
for more information at AD@homeschoolfeast.com.
Baseball had a kick off meeting in December. If anyone still wishes to participate in this program, please contact our baseball
commissioner Susan Rutherford at 210-214-0953. Our fine track and field program will have their kick off meetings on January
5th and January 9th at 6:30pm in Burwood Hall at FEAST.
On that note we have a rare opportunity to expand the sports offerings at FEAST this spring to include Lacrosse! If you have
a middle school boy, grade 5 through 8, who would like to participate in Lacrosse, please contact Mr. Kevin C. Boyle at Cell:
(210)273-2661. We will need at least 13 for a functional team and if we get that response, we will form a team this spring. But,
we need your responses now to see if this sport is feasible.
Remember that to participate in any FEAST sport, you will need a Patriot Pass, which allows your entire family access to all
FEAST activities for a full year. As of December 1, that pass which serves the whole family is reduced to the half year service
price of just $75. Remember also that we never wish that Patriot Pass to become an economic burden to anyone, so if it is for
your family, contact us so that we can work out a barter arrangement. We hope that you and your family will find a place in
these sports activities, and we pray that you are all well and enjoy the Spirit of Christ during this blessed season!
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” Psalm 133:1
PRACTICES
Practices are every Monday and Wednesday at 4:45pm to 7pm.
The first high school practice will be Wednesday, January 18th,
4:45pm at McAllister Park. Practices will continue to be held in
McAllister Park until Monday January 30th in which practices
will switch to Randolph High School on Randolph AFB. This
first practice at Randolph will be our High School Assessment
where we test the high school athletes to help determine which
events they will train for this year. All future practices will be at
Randolph High School. Note: practices will end early, around
6:30pm, the first few weeks of the season due to darkness.
The first middle school practice will be February 1st, 4:45 pm,
at Randolph HS on Randolph AFB. All middle school practices
will be held at this location every Monday and Wednesday
throughout the season. The middle school athletes will practice
at the same time as the high school athletes. The middle
school assessments, where we test the Middle school athletes,
will occur at practice on February 6th. It is very important for
athletes to attend one of the two assessment dates, especially
if this is their first year of track. Middle school athletes can be
tested at the HS Assessments and vice versa if necessary.
MEETS
There will be 7-8 meets during the season, and they will all be
local area meets with the exception of the Home School State
meet and invitational meets for elite high school athletes. The
final track meet is the Home School State meet on April 29th.
This year FEAST will be the meet host of the Home School State
meet and we will host the meet, at Hutto High School north of
Austin.
Please pass the word to your home school friends and let them
know about the FEAST track team. If you have any additional
questions, please contact David Dunn at feasttrack@gvtc.com.
