3. Enabling Strategy - Building Partnerships and Schools as Hubs 3.1 Enrich the engagement of student voice and leadership ➣➣ Meet with elementary and secondary student senators regularly to engage in dialogue regarding school-related activities and initiatives and set goals for the upcoming year. ➣➣ Hosted the 28-8: The Power of Leadership Student Conference for student councils and student leaders from each secondary school and elementary student senators. ➣➣ Invite opportunities for student engagement and leadership through Board-wide and community initiatives: Niagara Wine Festival Grande Parade, WE Day, Heritage Fair, Speak Out!, Student Leadership Symposium, Graduation Celebration. ➣➣ Using student input gathered from the recently attended FNMI Truth and Reconciliation Conference and 28-8: The Power of Leadership Conference, student trustees will compose a document of recommendations for future student leadership conferences. ➣➣ Increased student participation in annual Culture of Life Conference to encourage a strong Catholic voice on life issues. 3.2 Enhance the relationship and capacity between schools, parishes and homes in Niagara Catholic and the Diocese of St. Catharines ➣➣ Implement Tiers Two and Three of the Catholic Education Congress, to engage students, parents, the Niagara Catholic Parent Involvement Committee, Catholic School Councils, Trustees, staff, priests, parishioners, Catholic educational partners and community members. ➣➣ Increase Principal and Pastor dialogue at Advent Director’s Meeting Faith Formation in support of Tier Two of the Catholic Education Congress. ➣➣ Support local triad committees in developing and sustaining local initiatives and/or events to strengthen the triad relationship. ➣➣ Festival of Families to take place on May 25, 2017. ➣➣ Trustees, staff and parents to participate in the annual Faith Formation program focused on our theological theme One Family in Christ: Love Him. 7 Niagara Catholic District School Board
3.3 Expand, develop and implement community hub programs, services and facilities partnerships within school communities ➣➣ Approval of grant submission proposal to Ministry of Education to fund “After-School Skills Development Programs” that enhance the skills for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for programs intended to run between the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. ➣➣ Niagara Catholic and Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) are working through a leasehold agreement at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School. This agreement will optimize empty space on the second floor of the elementary school. ➣➣ Niagara Catholic will further develop after-school programming, as well as weekend and summer programming in specific areas, due to community need. ➣➣ We continue to work closely with the Region of Niagara through Community and Social Services as well as YMCA of Niagara to maximize our investment by working together and not duplicating program deliveries. ➣➣ Niagara Catholic will continue to develop partnerships with our indigenous communities, working closely with the Niagara Regional Native Centre, the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre and the Niagara Region Metis Council. This partnership will further expand our current secondary educational opportunities for students, and look to further expansion such as day care services and elementary programming. ➣➣ Strive Niagara is a community partner we are working with for our Young Parent Program. Niagara Catholic will continue to monitor the current program and look for expansion needs. ➣➣ The John Howard Society plays a key role in Niagara Catholic’s Alternative Education programming. We are working with the John Howard Society in sharing of facilities as well as resources, including job development and career awareness opportunities. ➣➣ The Raft Niagara is a partner of Niagara Catholic, working to provide support services, programs, resources and reintegration back into school wherever possible. ➣➣ Niagara Catholic is currently developing a health and wellness partnership in three elementary schools with No Limit Performance as a pilot program. No Limit Performance is providing health and wellness opportunities (body movement, stretches, cardio etc.) as well as a full nutritious breakfast. This program will be monitored closely with the possibility of expanding into an afterschool and/or summer program. ➣ ➣ Niagara Catholic continues to work closely with Brock University and Niagara College, not only for transitioning activities and opportunities but also for shared usage of facilities. We continue to offer opportunities to both post-secondary institutions to share underutilized space, which in turn potentially develops to shared resources and staffing opportunities.
