I am proud to introduce <strong>the</strong> <strong>British</strong> <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
Production Awards, which recognise <strong>and</strong> reward<br />
excellence in this very competitive field. Once again, we<br />
received a large number <strong>of</strong> entries. The impressive range<br />
<strong>of</strong> expertise <strong>and</strong> skills involved made <strong>the</strong> job <strong>of</strong> judging<br />
<strong>the</strong> entries a difficult one. These finalists represent <strong>the</strong> best<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best, <strong>and</strong> congratulations are due to everyone who<br />
made it onto <strong>the</strong> shortlist.<br />
There was stiff competition in all <strong>the</strong> categories.<br />
As was <strong>the</strong> case last year, <strong>the</strong> Best Jacket/Cover <strong>Design</strong><br />
category proved <strong>the</strong> most popular. Hot on its heels was<br />
<strong>the</strong> Primary, Secondary <strong>and</strong> Tertiary Education. O<strong>the</strong>r<br />
categories that attracted a higher number <strong>of</strong> entries than<br />
last year included: Trade Illustrated, Digitally Printed,<br />
Literature <strong>and</strong> Limited Edition & Fine Binding. But it<br />
would be a mistake to single out any particular category.<br />
All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are vital, <strong>and</strong> each showcases pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism,<br />
high st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> an impressive array <strong>of</strong> talent.<br />
I would like to thank our judging panel <strong>of</strong> David Button<br />
(4edge Ltd), Philip Downer (Front <strong>of</strong> Store) <strong>and</strong> Steve<br />
Simmonds (RARE <strong>Design</strong> Associates). The panel brought<br />
experience, insight <strong>and</strong> clarity to a challenging task.<br />
Of course, <strong>the</strong>re would be no Awards without <strong>the</strong> vital<br />
backing <strong>of</strong> all our sponsors, who deserve special thanks<br />
for making <strong>the</strong>m possible. Oxford Brookes University did<br />
a great job <strong>of</strong> processing <strong>the</strong> entries, as did <strong>the</strong> marketing<br />
team at <strong>the</strong> BPIF in organising <strong>the</strong> Awards night <strong>and</strong><br />
making it such a memorable <strong>and</strong> enjoyable event.<br />

Awards, <strong>and</strong> for helping show that GB really does st<strong>and</strong><br />

The members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judging panel arrived at Oxford<br />
Brookes University in late July, <strong>the</strong> judges were about<br />
to undertake two days <strong>of</strong> intense debate <strong>and</strong> decision<br />
making. The group comprised <strong>of</strong> individuals from a<br />
cross-section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sector, with <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> design,<br />
manufacture, print <strong>and</strong> retail all represented.<br />
The judges are grateful to <strong>the</strong> BPIF, Oxford Brookes<br />
University <strong>and</strong> The Publishers Association for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
hospitality <strong>and</strong> enthusiasm in hosting <strong>and</strong> organising this<br />
great event.<br />
The organisers were delighted to see that <strong>the</strong> total<br />
number <strong>of</strong> entries this year was 406, an increase from <strong>the</strong><br />
previous year <strong>of</strong> 374, though this left <strong>the</strong> judging panel<br />
with much to do. Most categories contained a broader<br />
spread <strong>of</strong> <strong>book</strong> styles <strong>and</strong> materials. With digital content<br />
continuing to increase its share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> market, it<br />
was refreshing to see <strong>the</strong> care <strong>and</strong> craftsmanship that<br />
publishers continue to apply to <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir print<br />
<strong>book</strong>s. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong> digitally printed <strong>and</strong> cross<br />
media was much better presented <strong>the</strong>n in previous years.<br />
Overall quite an achievement in <strong>the</strong>se difficult times.<br />
As is now traditional, <strong>the</strong> judging process began as an<br />
individual exercise with each judge carefully examining<br />
every entry against <strong>the</strong> criteria <strong>and</strong> selecting those that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y felt deserved to progress to <strong>the</strong> shortlist in <strong>the</strong><br />
relevant category. A challenge as always however <strong>the</strong><br />
competition had proven once again as strong as ever.<br />
The diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judges’ expertise <strong>and</strong> knowledge<br />
meant that each entry was assessed in terms <strong>of</strong> design<br />
<strong>and</strong> layout, <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> manufacture <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> perceived<br />
appeal to <strong>the</strong> ultimate judge – <strong>the</strong> consumer!
It should be noted that a judge who had active<br />
participation in <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> an entry was not<br />
permitted to comment on that entry throughout <strong>the</strong><br />
judging process. The subsequent shortlisting <strong>of</strong> an entry<br />
connected to a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judging panel was a<br />
result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> consideration <strong>and</strong> debate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remaining<br />
members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> panel.<br />
The final stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> judging process involved a group<br />
discussion, leading to <strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> highly commended<br />
<strong>and</strong> a winner for each category.<br />
The final decision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Book</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year Award really<br />
caught <strong>the</strong> panel’s attention with many entries displaying<br />
outst<strong>and</strong>ing design <strong>and</strong> manufacturing values, a great<br />
reflection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> domestic expertise.<br />

JuDgeS’ comment:<br />
Attention to detail in design, image selection<br />
<strong>and</strong> production has resulted in a superlative<br />
<strong>book</strong> that redefines quality <strong>and</strong> imagination<br />
in that well-trodden genre, <strong>the</strong> consumer<br />
restaurant guide. Layout is consistent but highly<br />
flexible throughout this title, which pushes print<br />
disciplines to <strong>the</strong> limit for a mass-market <strong>book</strong>.<br />
The skills <strong>of</strong> designers <strong>and</strong> printers are vividly<br />
evident in this worthy overall winner.
