MIG Carbide hardfacing
- Tungsten Carbide Vibratory Feeder
An easy to install, easy to use system for feeding alll grades
of near-diamond hard tungsten carbide into a molten bed of
tough high-chrome, high-carbon alloy, produces an overlay
that increases service life up to 50 times on parts subject to
servere abrasion.
• Umprecedented wear life
• Tungsten carbide up to 80% concentration
• Less carbide dissolution
• High, fast deposit rates
• Thicker deposits for longer life
• Simple to operate
3
Typical Applications
10 x 20 meshh tungsten carbide metered
into a molten deposit of Rankin Super
Matrix gave this hammer 20 times longer
service life.
Overlaid with 20 x 30 mesh tungsten
carbide, this tooth outperformed all other
hardfaced all other hardfaced parts by five
times.
This balde was overlaid with 8 x 10 mesh
tungsten carbide.
Additional Information On Welding With MIG Carbide
Preparation: Always try to grind the weld area to clean, white metal. Many shops do not clean to save time and money.
The surface does not have to be perfect, but at least touch the surface.
Wire: The most versatile wire size is .045 DIA. wire. This wire can be used with the higher voltage and lower amps to make
thinner weld beads with deep penetration. The best wires are triple or double de-oxidized (Aluminum, Zirconium, Titanium).
They make a very clean puddle for the carbide to drop though and have a high tolerance for dirty base metal surfaces.
Other wires can be used, for example, high-Chrome/High Carbon, small-diameter hardfacing wires.
Carbide Depositions: A mixed carbide (15-30 mesh size) is recommended. Many MIG carbide users are now zeroing in
on 12-25 mesh size or something close to this range—about the size of very coarse sand. For very fine particle abrasion
use 20-30 mesh size—slightly coarser than beach sand. The best choice for general service is the 15-30 mesh size. For
pure rock service use 5-10 or 8-12 mesh size. For pure fine sand service use 20-30 mesh size with hardfacing wire.
Screening Used Carbide: After several re-cycles, used carbide tends to pick up over-sized particles, splatter, dust, dirt, etc.
This contamination will begin to affect the weldability. Screen the re-cycled carbide through 8” diameter Tyler sieve screens
of the same mesh size as your carbide. For example, if you are using 15-30 carbide, buy two screens and one bottom pan.
The top set would be 15 mesh. The middle set will be 30 mesh. Discard or recrush everything on top of the 15 screen and
throw everything in the bottom pan. (We can furnish Tyler screens.)
Gases and Voltages: Argon/Oxygen (2%) is the most popular mix. Pure Argon can be used, however it is colder. 75/25
(75% Argon/ 25% Carbon Dioxide) is another choice. Pure CO2 is the cheapest gas and can be used with higher voltage. In
fact, the higher the voltage, the flatter will be the bead. All gases can be used with high or low voltage:
Minimizing Distortion: To minimize distortion (especially on thinner parts), use lower volts and amps with pure Argon. Use
preheat on all parts to eliminate or minimize distortion. Most thick and wide ledges can be made almost flat with lower weld
settings, medium preheat and use of clamps. Thinner parts must be pre-bowed and warped (along with pre-heat). Most thin
parts are bowed .5 to .75 inches and warped about .5 to 1.0 inch.
Typical Weld Settings: Weld settings for medium, hand-held weld speeds would be the following:
Welding Techniques: Single layer welds are recommended. Multiple layers tend to dissolve the carbide in the lower layer
and produce a very hard deposit that will chip and spall off with only light impact. Use oscillated beads about 5/8” - 1” wide
(1.5” max). Oscillation frequency should be 70-85 cps (cycles per second). Aim carbide into the trailing side of the arc
puddle. The aim point is critical for good carbide distribution. If these basic parameters are followed, reliable work can be
readily produced by any weld shop.
Description & Application
DC gouging carbons are made by mixing carbon/graphite with a binder, baking, and then coating with a
controlled thickness of copper. Carbons are available in three types; Pointed, Jointed and Flat.
• Pointed carbons are the standard all purpose gouging electrode. Controlled copper coaing improves
electrical conductivity providing more efficient, cooler operation and helps maintain electrode diameter
at the point of the arc.
• Jointed carbons have the added bebefit of working wihout slub loss, with each rod having a female
socket and matching male tang. They can be used with semi and fully automatic torches.
• Flat carbons are specially designed for close tolerance metal removal and scarfing applications,
producing a rectangular groove.
Air carbon arc gouging is done in the down hand, vertical, horizontal and overhead position with a stick
out of 180mm and an electrode angle of approximately 35 degress, depending on th application.
The groove width obtained will be approximately 3mm wider than the carbon size.
The goughing action occurs when the arc is struck, removing molten metal as the electrde is moved
along the work piece. A slow travel speed produces a deep groove, a fast travel speed produces a
shallow groove.
The air flow must be turned on before gouging commences. The operator must ensure that adequate
eye (shade 12-14), ear and clothing protection is worn.
Notes on Usage
• Fast, clean, smooth hassel free gouging
• Able to remove metal from a wide range of common ferrous & non ferrous metals
• Designed for DC operation
• Superior arc stability
Gouging carbons are used for the efficient gouging, back gouging and plate edge preparation,
touching up and remova of old or defective hardfacing and stainless steel weld deposits. They are
used for reworking plates, dies, castings, pipes, armour plating etc. they gouge and sever ferrous and
non ferrous metals such as carbon steel, low alloy steel, cast iron, nickel alloys (nickel less than 80%),
magnesium alloys and aluminium on DCEP. Copper alloys, aluminium bronze alloys and aluminium
nickel bronze alloys can be gouged using DCEN.
Air carbon arc welding is used in many industries such as agriculture, automotive, heavy fabrication,
construction, foundaries, maintenance and repair shops, minimg and quarrying, military, shipyards,
power plants, railroads, steel mills to name a few.
Conditioning Data
If carbons are damp, they should be re dried at 180ºC for 10 hours, otherwise they may shatter.
