CPB<br />

PURPOSE: CPB encourage8 the grovth and development <strong>of</strong><br />

noncommercial public radio and television broadcaeting for<br />

rnstructional, educational, and cultural purpo8e8, and serves as<br />

a financial sponsor and Catalyst for "Public Television,'* i.e.,<br />

T.V. not reliant upon commbrcial support. CPB contract6 vrth or<br />

make8 grant6 to eximting and new public telecommunication<br />

entities to aid in financing the production or acquisition and<br />

national distribution <strong>of</strong> public telecommunications services by<br />

such entities. CPB asrrists in the financing <strong>of</strong> several<br />

system-wide activitie6, including national satellite<br />

interconnection semicer, and provides technical assistance,<br />

research, and planning services. CPB obtain8 grants and<br />

contracts from federal and nonfederal sources.<br />
