<strong>USAID</strong> Sustainable Tourism Training<br />

CORE DELIVERY TEAM<br />

Mike Colby recently returned to <strong>USAID</strong>/Washington, joining the Land Resources<br />

Management Team in <strong>USAID</strong>’s Office of Natural Resources Management as Senior<br />

Natural Resources Economics and Enterprise Development Advisor. Mike brings a<br />

systems approach to integrating ecological, economic, organizational, and social<br />

concerns into development planning. He has served as Cross-Cutting Policy Advisor and<br />

Finance & Economics Team Leader in <strong>USAID</strong>/Cairo’s Egypt Environmental Policy<br />

Program (2000-2003); Senior Environmental & Social Policy Advisor in the U.S.<br />

Treasury Department (on multilateral development banks and the UN Conventions on<br />

POPs and Climate, 1998-2000); and Environmental Planning Advisor to <strong>USAID</strong>’s<br />

Asia/Near East Bureau (1996-1998). Previously, he worked in the strategic planning<br />

offices of The World Bank, USEPA, and the International Joint Commission of<br />

U.S./Canada. He also helped found two NGOs, including the Willapa Bay Alliance in<br />

Washington State, which became a nationally-recognized model of private/community<br />

partnerships for NRM and sustainable development.<br />

Mike holds a Doctorate in Social Systems Sciences from the Wharton School of<br />

Business and a B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College, and has written several<br />

internationally-noted publications related to sustainable development. He is also an<br />

award-winning nature and sports photographer, more recently focusing his lenses<br />

underwater.<br />

Andy Drumm is an environmental and ecotourism specialist with 15 years experience in<br />

both private and non-profit sectors – principally in Latin America and the Caribbean. He<br />

has coordinated multi-sectoral alliances for conservation and created an award-winning<br />

ecotourism business. Andy joined The Nature Conservancy in 1998, where he has<br />

created numerous tourism planning and management tools; has developed a tourism<br />

user fee initiative for conservation finance at protected areas in Mexico, Belize and<br />

Bolivia; and has provided technical assistance on ecotourism business development and<br />

tourism management in protected areas to partner organizations internationally.<br />

Andy holds a Diploma of Higher Education in Environmental Studies from Avery Hill<br />

College in London, England and a B.Sc.(Hons.) in Environmental Studies from the City<br />

of London Polytechnic. He is working toward an M.Phil/Ph.D in Environmental Sciences.<br />

His thesis topic: "Integrated Impact <strong>Assessment</strong> of Nature Tourism in the Ecuadorian<br />

Amazon”; thesis financed by <strong>USAID</strong> Project.
