Our Food Council brings together top chefs,
restaurateurs, and others in the food industry
to help City Harvest ght hunger.

DEAR FRIENDS,
Just more than thirty years ago, the seeds of City Harvest were planted
when one of the organization’s founders asked a restaurant to donate
cooked potatoes to her soup kitchen. That thirty gallon donation,
scooped from potato skin appetizers, ultimately led to the creation of
City Harvest, the world’s first food rescue organization.
To this day, City Harvest relies on the partnership and generosity of the
food industry. Thanks in large part to the chefs and restaurants in this
2013 edition of Great Food, Good Hearts, City Harvest will rescue more
than 42 million pounds of food and distribute it to some 600 community
food programs throughout the five boroughs this year. In addition to
donating food, many chefs in this guide contribute their time and skills
to help raise funds and awareness for our fight against hunger.
Over one million New Yorkers rely on emergency food each year and the
private response to hunger is more critical than ever. By opening their
hearts and kitchens, the chefs and restaurants in this guide are
nourishing the work of City Harvest with their unwavering support,
dedication and kindness. City Harvest could not continue its significant
work without them, and we hope these pages will serve as a helpful
resource when you consider places to dine in and around Manhattan.
Bon appétit,
