A survey conducted under the<br />
umbrella of the institute of food<br />
Technologists has concluded<br />
that Guinness really does taste<br />
better in Ireland. The study<br />
consisted of fieldwork carried<br />
out over an 11-month period by<br />
four researchers from countries<br />
with a long brewing tradition:<br />
Ireland, England, The<br />
Netherlands and Germany. They<br />
all used identical equipment, but<br />
central to each test was a visual<br />
analogue scale, scoring the<br />
pint's taste on a scale of 0 to<br />
100. The average Irish pint rated<br />
74, while the average from all<br />
other countries rated 57. The<br />
four-man team did admit<br />
however, that the 'craic' or<br />
'ambiance of the Irish drinking<br />
environment could influence its<br />

103 pints were consumed in 71<br />
pints across 14 countries, but<br />
the researchers did admit,<br />
however, that further study was<br />
needed to backup their<br />
preliminary findings. The<br />
findings were published in the<br />
journal of Food Science, a<br />
monthly periodical of not-forprofit<br />

In 1599, Sir William <strong>Temple</strong>, a renowned teacher and<br />
philosopher, entered the service of the Lord Deputy of Ireland.<br />
In 1609, <strong>Temple</strong> was made Provost of Trinity College, Dublin<br />
and Master Chancery in Ireland and moved to this country.<br />
Sir William <strong>Temple</strong> built his house and gardens on newly<br />
reclaimed land here on the corner of <strong>Temple</strong> Lane and the street<br />
called <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Bar</strong>. In 1656, his son, Sir John <strong>Temple</strong>, acquired<br />
additional land which, with reclamation made possible by the<br />
building of a new sea wall, allowed the development of the area<br />
we now know as <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Bar</strong>.<br />
In the 17th century “<strong>Bar</strong>r” (later shortened to <strong>Bar</strong>) usually meant<br />
a raised estuary sandbank often used for walking on. Thus the<br />
river Liffey embankment alongside the <strong>Temple</strong> family's plot<br />
became known as <strong>Temple</strong>'s <strong>Bar</strong>r or simply, <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Bar</strong>.<br />
Later this evolved into the present thoroughfare connecting this<br />
whole area from Westmoreland Street to Fishamble Street.
