— President’s message —<br />
Our Board members are working hard and are very excited about planning our <strong>Fair</strong> weekend<br />
to open this August 10th, 11th and 12th. We have an exciting lineup of band entertainment,<br />
shows, events and displays which will provide family fun and entertainment for all ages.<br />
We are fortunate to have Crown Amusements providing our midway, and Ontario Dock<br />
Dogs to showcase their dog trials in an 80 foot pool of water, Saturday and Sunday for<br />
all to enjoy. With children’s shows, cattle and horse shows, agricultural and home craft<br />
displays it will be the weekend highlight of the summer season. Next summer of 2013 will<br />
mark the 175th anniversary edition of our fair . This will be an event which will require<br />
an enormous effort for our board members. We are asking everyone to step forward and<br />
volunteer to help in these effors. We need you; it is your fair. To contribute some time,<br />
please call Joy at 613-269-2022, or refer to our website to sign up with your name and<br />
number. Any type of volunteer help will be greatly appreciated.<br />

general rules & regulations<br />
1. The annual fee for membership in the <strong>Merrickville</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> Society (MAS) is $5.00. When<br />
prize money amounts to $10.00 or more, the following year’s membership dues will be deducted.<br />
2. Adult members and Juniors exhibiting in Adult Classes must pay the $5.00 annual membership<br />
fee in order to compete. A membership is not required for Juniors exhibiting.<br />
3. Entries are accepted on M.A.S. forms only. One form per exhibitor.<br />
4. The Directors will do their utmost to procure the most competent judges in each of the classes.<br />
If an exhibitor is dissatisfied with any decision of such judges, they must immediately enter a<br />
written protest with the Secretary/Treasurer against such decision. The Directors shall inquire<br />
into the written protest at once and their decision shall be final.<br />
5. No persons shall act as judge in any class in which they are exhibiting.<br />
6. No persons will be allowed to interfere with the judges while judging is in progress.<br />
7. A lone entry in a class/section need not necessarily be awarded a prize.<br />
8. Livestock and all articles for competition must be entered in the name of the owner unless<br />
otherwise stated in the prize list. Failure to observe this rule will result in either forfeiture of<br />
an awarded prize or in no prize being awarded at all.<br />
9. All persons obtaining prizes fraudulently shall forfeit all goods or monies awarded.<br />
10. Adult prizes will be awarded at any time after the close of the fair (usually within two months).<br />
If receipts are insufficient to meet the prize list in full, the prizes will be paid pro rata as funds<br />
permit.<br />
11. Children’s prizes, where possible, are awarded at the conclusion of the fair on Sunday.<br />
12. All cheques must be cashed no later than December 31 of the current year, after which they<br />
become the property of the M.A.S.<br />
13. All exhibitors are expected to conform to safety standards while on the grounds and may be<br />
asked to leave if endangering the safety and well-being of any person or livestock.<br />

Entries made day of the show will be charged an extra fee of $10 per horse for the day. There is no<br />
charge for Ring Numbers but they must be returned at end of show.<br />
Entry fees: $2 per class.<br />
Warm-up: $2/round<br />
Warm-up over fences: $2/round (one round only)<br />
Warm-up from 7:00 am - 8:00 am (not judged)<br />

Mounted Tack & Turnout: cleanliness and neatness to be judged. Horses/Ponies should be under<br />
control at all times and never left unattended. They should be clean, well cared for & equipment<br />

should fit well. Riders must wear shoes or boots with a good heel. Hard hats with chinstrap are<br />
mandatory in jumping classes.<br />

horse Pulling rules - 27’ 6” disTanCe Pull - buCKeye sled<br />
1 . Two pulls must be completed to qualify for prize money. Current Coggins and insurance papers<br />
must be presented. To help offset drug testing costs there will be a $10.00 fee per team to pull.<br />
2. There shall be no alcoholic beverages used by teamsters, helpers or officials.<br />
3. All teams must be weighed the day of the pull with a halter and loose shank.<br />
4. Light Class - 3500 lbs and under. Scales will open 1 1/2 hours before pull begins and close 30<br />
minutes before pull. boTh Classes Pull TogeTher.<br />
5. lengTh of draw is 27 feeT 6 inChes. longesT draw CounTs, 2 aTTemPTs.<br />
A total of 2 1/2 minutes will be allowed to complete each draw. buCKeye Pulling sled to<br />
be used when possible. Pulling sled to be drawn in both directions for two rounds and then only<br />
one direction for remainder of pull. On the second hitch, teamsters have the option of taking<br />
immediately following the first hitch, where the boat is sitting. If he/she passes and takes the<br />
second hitch at the end of the round then the boat can be spotted anywhere on the track as long<br />
as there is sufficient side lines left. The pulling sled to be centered between the two side lines. To<br />
be eligible for a second hitch a reasonable attempt must be made on first hitch. Side lines must<br />
be 18 feet apart.<br />
6. A teamster is allowed two helpers. Teamsters and helpers must remain behind the double tree<br />
while the horses are pulling. After completing the first pull, no change in teamster will be allowed,<br />
except in the case of injury.<br />
7. A break in harness - the teamster will decide if he keeps the distance or will start over.<br />
8. A run-away team or team out of control will automatically be eliminated and drug tested at<br />
teamsters expense.<br />
9. A pull will be disqualified.<br />
a) if horses step on or over lines or markers<br />
b) if horses are beaten, lines are swung, foul language used<br />
c) if helpers interfere in any way after horses are hitched<br />
d) if teamsters or helpers head the horses while pulling or hitching<br />
e) if teamsters or helpers slap, push or touch the horses with hand lines or wiffletrees<br />
while in the ring. no CheCK slaPs will be allowed.<br />
10. Three circles passing in front of the boat or anything over a twelve inch chuck will be classified<br />
as one pull.<br />
11. Any teamster or helper will automatically be ejected from the contest with all winnings forfeited<br />
if he argues with the judge, fairboard, pulling committee or other contestants.<br />
12. no Changing of bridles during The Pull.<br />

general hall rules and regulaTions<br />
1. Only one entry per section is allowed by an exhibitor.<br />
2. All articles must be the work of the exhibitor and can be exhibited no more than two years at this<br />
fair. Soiled and worn articles will not be accepted for judging.<br />
3. All agricultural or horticultural produce entered for competition must actually be raised or grown<br />
by the exhibitor. Any persons exhibiting in Classes Grains or Vegetables must live within a 75<br />
km radius of <strong>Merrickville</strong>.<br />
4. The exhibition building will be open from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Thursday August 9th, and from<br />
7:30 am to 8:45 am Friday August 10th for receiving of articles to be judged. Doors will be<br />
closed to the public at 8:50 am Friday.<br />
5. At 9:00 am Friday August 10th judging will commence on exhibits. No persons other than the<br />
managers and judges will be allowed in the hall until judging is complete.<br />
6. After judging has begun no more entries shall be received and no entries can be moved to other<br />
sections. No <strong>Fair</strong> Director has the power to authorize the Secretary/Treasurer to mark or change<br />
any entry form or tag.<br />
7. The Directors will take every precaution to ensure the safety of the articles exhibited during the<br />
time that the <strong>Fair</strong> is in progress. It must be understood that the owner accepts all risk in entering<br />
any article and if any article is accidentally damaged, lost or stolen, the MAS and its Directors<br />
will not make any payment for the value thereof.<br />
8. Items selected for exhibit beyond <strong>Merrickville</strong> <strong>Fair</strong>, at the District or Provincial level are exhibited<br />
at the owner’s risk and MAS takes no responsibility for loss or damage of these articles.<br />
9. Hall exhibits can only be removed from the building on Sunday August 12th, <strong>2012</strong> between<br />
3:00pm and 4:00 pm. The Directors do not take responsibility for items left after that time.<br />

Class 26: oaas ChamPionshiP QuilT ComPeTiTion rules<br />
District and Ontario Quilt Competitions sponsored by the Ontario Association of <strong>Agricultural</strong> Societies.<br />
The handmade quilt from this section judged “Best of <strong>Show</strong>” may go on to District and Provincial<br />
competitions. (If the quilt wins first place at more than one fair, the quilt judged second may also enter<br />
the District competition). District prizes awarded: $25, $15, and $10. Only the first-place quilt at the<br />
District Competition is eligible to enter the Championship Quilt competition at the Annual Convention<br />
in Toronto. The annual winning entry will be declared the Ontario Association of <strong>Agricultural</strong> Societies<br />
Championship Quilt, with a $500. Grand Prize, certificate and ribbon awarded. The exhibitor retains<br />
ownership of the quilt.<br />
Ontario Association of <strong>Agricultural</strong> Societies - Annual Machine Championship Quilt Competition<br />
Eligibility, Rules and Regulations, General Conditions:<br />
A. Entries must be solely made and machine quilted by the exhibitor, and exhibited and judged at a<br />
local Ontario Association of <strong>Agricultural</strong> Societies (OAAS) <strong>Fair</strong> to be eligible for this competition.<br />
B. Entry quilts must be minimum of 72” X 90” (smaller quilts will not be eligible to proceed to the<br />
next levels of competition).<br />
C. Judging will occur at local fairs and district levels. A Provincial Grand Champion Machine Quilt<br />
will be selected at the annual convention of OAAS.<br />
D. Upon making entry into the OAAS Machine Quilt Competition, the Exhibitor agrees to participate<br />
in any promotional activities related to the competition.<br />
E. The winning OAAS Champion Machine Quilt will not be eligible to compete in future District and<br />
or Convention OAAS competitions.<br />
F. The winner’s name will be displayed at the <strong>Fair</strong> on a sign provided by OAAS.<br />
