Double-figure sales growth at Wolfskin again
• 32% increase to EUR 205.5 million in 2008
• International expansion to be rigorously pursued
• Company locations set for further growth
Idstein, 19 February 2009 – Outdoor equipment supplier, Jack Wolfskin, has
experienced particularly strong growth for the fifth consecutive year: during the
2008 calendar year, the Company’s net goods sales in Europe rose by 32% to EUR
205.5 million compared with the same period of the previous year (2007: EUR 156.3
million).
“Our consistently strong growth is thanks mainly to our innovative products and
attractive brands”, commented Manfred Hell, CEO and co-owner of Jack Wolfskin. “We
will continue to pursue this course and make significant investments in order to improve
brand recognition. In our opinion, Jack Wolfskin still has enormous potential both in
Germany and beyond, on the basis of which we also are expecting two-digit percentage
growth in 2009.”
30% growth in Germany, international expansion makes headway
Germany is Jack Wolfskin’s largest market with 30% growth, followed by Austria with 32%
and Switzerland with 22%.
The East European countries, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic and Ukraine, performed
particularly well in 2008, reporting growth of 118%. Expansion in China which, after only one
year, already boasts 25 Jack Wolfskin stores, is also very pleasing. Opening further stores and
obtaining new points of sale in sports and outdoor retail outlets are expected to enhance
further development in both focus regions.
Moreover, Jack Wolfskin is all set to open its first St. Petersburg store very soon. This will
mean implementation of the Wolfskin Store system in Russia, after numerous customers have
been supplied via sports and outdoor retail outlets for the past three years.
Growth in all sales channels
Sales increased considerably in all three sales channels, Jack Wolfskin stores, sports specialist
retail and outdoor specialist retail. The most successful of the sales channels was sports retail
with 37% sales growth.
A total of 45 new Jack Wolfskin stores were opened in 2008, with 38 in Germany, three in
Austria and one each in Romania, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Poland. There are
currently a total of 200 Jack Wolfskin stores throughout Europe. 168 of these are located in
Germany, 7 in Switzerland, 14 in Austria, 3 in Belgium, 3 in Romania , 2 in Poland and one
each in the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
In 2009, expansion of stores is expected to continue at the same rate as in 2008.
Company locations Idstein and Neu Wulmstorf set for further growth
For more than ten years, Jack Wolfskin’s headquarters have been located in Idstein/Taunus,
Germany. In 2008, wide-ranging constructional changes led to the modernisation of the site.
A third office building was also added which acts as a development centre for the three
product ranges clothing, shoes and equipment.
The European logistics centre, which supplies all Jack Wolfskin’s customers, will be relocated
to a large newly constructed logistics plant with over 30,000 m² of space (with the possibility
of increasing capacity to a maximum of 50,000 m²) in Neu Wulmstorf by the end of 2009.
Partial operation is already underway here. It was necessary to build a new site as the original
premises close to the Port of Hamburg became too small without any possibility of expansion.
Jack Wolfskin currently has a total of 340 full-time employees at these two sites and in the
branches outside Germany. 51 new full-time jobs were created in Idstein and Hamburg in
2008. Jack Wolfskin will be employing more people in 2009. The number of employees is
expected to increase by 15%.
