Oxygen Generation
by Pressure Swing
Adsorption
2
The experience
Linde as the world leader in adsorption technology
has designed and supplied more than
500 Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants.
Major PSA applications are the recovery and
purification of hydrogen and the generation of
nitrogen and oxygen.
The Linde O 2-VPSA plants
These plants are based on a reliable, flexible
and trouble-free VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing
Adsorption) process and designed for on-stream
applications with need for low cost gaseous oxygen
with purity up to 94 %.
Linde Oxygen VPSA plants range in the size of
400 Nm³/h up to 6,000 Nm³/h with an oxygen
product purity of 90% to 94 %.
Up to 1,800 Nm³/h oxygen can be supplied by
the fully containerized Linde C-series in several
pre-engineered capacity types.
In the range of 10 Nm³/h up to 500 Nm³/h
oxygen Linde can provide the basic PSA process
(without vacuum).
VPSA plant for 1,300 Nm 3 /h oxygen
for Pulp and Paper Mill in Sweden
The advantages
Oxygen on demand
Production of oxygen at the specified flow and
purity within a short time of demand by simple
push-button.
Energy efficiency
Low specific energy consumption.
Easy partial load operation
The Linde VPSA plants are fully automatically
adjusted to the actual product flow requirements
and operate in an energy-saving partial
load mode.
High availability
The Linde VPSA plants provide supreme availability
by using reliable components as dry vacuum
pumps and proprietary switching valves.
Fully automatic operation
The PLC based control system with its sophisticated
software controls the purity and the flow
by automatically adjusting the cycle time of the
Linde VPSA system.
Remote control
A bus-port for the communication with a plant
wide DCS and/or a communication board for the
remote control of the VPSA plant by modem is
supplied.
Containerized O 2-VPSA
In the capacity range of 400 Nm³/h to 1,800
Nm³/h, Linde provides fully standardized and
containerized VPSA plants within several plant
types. The plants are designed for easy accessibility,
maintenance and remarkably reduced
field construction/commissioning time. The
plants are easily relocatable.
The production of gases by means of the adsorption
process is based on the capability of porous
adsorption agents to bind gases. The individual
components of a gas mixture are adsorbed to
differing degrees on the very large surfaces
of the adsorbent. This effect is used within a
vacuum pressure swing adsorption process to
continuously separate out one component from
a gas mixture.
The process
Zeolitic molecular sieves are used as adsorption
materials when producing oxygen from the air by
adsorptive means. They adsorb nitrogen, water
vapour and carbon dioxide to a much higher
degree than oxygen. This means, that when
process air is being passed through the adsorption
bed, a product flow comprising essentially
only oxygen and argon can be obtained.
The compressed air enters the adsorber. The
nitrogen is adsorbed while the oxygen product
leaves the vessel. After a certain time the
adsorption is stopped and evacuation by a dry
vacuum pump desorbs the enriched nitrogen.
The oxygen product flow can be further compressed,
if required.
The scope of supply
The scope of supply mainly comprises the
following material and equipment:
– Air compressor
– Vacuum pump
– Adsorber vessels
– Specially selected adsorbent material
– Valve skid
– Control system
– Online oxygen product analyzer
– Oxygen compressor, if required
Typical applications
For many processes using oxygen rather than air
reduces vent gas quantities and reduces energy
and capital cost requirements.
Iron and steel industry
Direct reduction, electric arc and reheat
furnaces, etc.
Non iron metal industry
Furnaces in the lead, copper and zinc industry
chemical leaching for minerals extraction.
Pulp and paper industry
Oxygen bleaching, delignification and ozone
generation.
VPSA plant for 5,000 Nm 3 /h oxygen for Copper Mill in Chile
Chemical industry
Chemical oxidation reactions using oxygen
reduces vent gas quantities and hence energy
and capital cost.
Waste water treatment
Wet oxidation, incineration and vitrification.
Glass industry
Furnace enrichment. Oxygen burners have a
more intense flame, resulting in a better heat
transfer, which reduces the furnace size and
fuel consumption.
Food industry
Fish farming and fermentation.
