Festival's final week 

offers change of pace 

The Festival of the Arts kicks 

off its final week with Zoo Story, a 

one act play written by Edward 

Alkee and directed by Alex 

Bruhanski. 

The play, which runs July 30 

and July 31, is a story of 

alienation and the necessity of 

communication, wherein the 

"tough guy" comes into conflict 

with the "little man." Zoo Story 

stars Bruhanski and Sid Filkow. 

Tickets are $5 in advance. 

• The festival offers a change ot 

pace the following two nights, 

August 1 and 2, as it presents two 

intimate evenings of theatrical 

highlights from Broadway to 

Brecht. April Curtis and Bryan 

Smith will give islanders an 

evening packed with music and 

theatre, documenting the life of 

an actress in Life upon the 

Wicked Stage. Curtis's talent and 

versatility will be remembered by 

those who took in Jacques Brel, 

and Bryan Smith is said to have 

thrilled audiences from England to 

Canada. Tickets are $5. 

• On Sunday, August 3, Salt 

Spring welcomes home Susan 

Cogan from a sucessful tour of the 

Middle East. Cogan accompanies 

herself on guitar, piano and 

percussion instruments, singing 

her own songs along with original 

material by other contemporary 

composers. She has added new 

material to her show, collected on 

her recent tour.

to join Cogan's show. He accompanies 

himself on the classical 

guitar and wooden flutes from 

India and Japan. Tickets are $5. 

• The festival concludes Monday, 

August 4, with Club Mongo. 

Organizers say the festival should 

end on an upbeat note, and will 

do so with this "favourite" Salt 

Spring Island group: "Their zany, 

off-the-wall musical theatre, featuring 

political slashings and good 

clean fun, leave their audiences 

laughing and looking for more," 

organizers note. 

Following the Club Mongo 

performance, the Festival of the 

Arts will hold a festival celebration 

and dance party for all who 

have helped and supported the 

inaugural event. 

• The festival committee would 

welcome feedback and suggestions 

for next year's version, to 

make it "even more successful" 

than in 1986. The committee 

hopes to keep members updated 

in forthcoming newsletters, and 

wishes to extend thanks to all who 

helped out and attended the 

festival in its first year. 

Chamber 

music on 

schedule 

A program of chamber sonatas 

from the High Baroque period 

will be presented on Salt Spring 

on August 31. 

The presentation will take place 

at Ganges United Church, beginning 

at 2 pm. 

Music will be performed by 

Music of the Spheres, a leading 

Vancouver-based early music 

quartet that includes Dean 

Nicholson (recorder), Trevor 

Tunnacliffe (recorder and bass 

viol), Finn Manniche (baroque 

cello), and Janet Ferguson (harpsichord). 

Each member of the quartet is 

a graduate of the UBC music 

program, where they met in the 

Collegium Musicum, an early 

chamber music class. From student 

performances at UBC, the 

members consolidated into an 

ensemble that booked frequent 

professional engagements in the 

Lower Mainland and B.C. Interior. 

The group's appearance on Salt 

Spring marks its debut here. The 

performance will feature a program 

of works by Dornel, Vivaldi, 

Scarlatti, Telemann and Handel. 

Each piece is a sonata from the 

High Baroque period (early 18th 

century) and is included in a 

program that covers a wide 

selection of musical styles, ranging 

from sonatas for solo instrument 

and basso continuo and 

trio-sonatas for two solo instruments 

with basso continuo—the 

two most common ensembles for 

High Baroque chamber music. 

Recorders and cello take turns 

as soloists while the basso continuo 

provides a fourdation, 

usually with the bass line played 

on cello or viol, doubled with 

harpsichord (which also adds 

improvised chords with the right 

hand). 

Music on the program was 

composed by French, Dutch and 

German nationals, reflecting the 

fact that those countries were 

most influential in shaping the 

Baroque music that was expressed 

in the various forms of 

the sonata.

Strong performances, script

Say you are a woman, 70 years 

of age. You live in a familiar but 

artless place. You are widowed and 

your daughter, age 35 and 

divorced, shares your home. 

There is a syndrome of noncommunication 

between mother 

and daughter as a continuation of 

a historical dilemma between 

husband and wife. The mechanics 

of life are dealt with routinely, as 

described by the Good 

Housekeeping book, but the 

uncertainties and fears are locked 

away in a chest of selfrecrimination 

and guilt.

Social isolation and the 

generation gap are pivotal points 

in Night Mother, a Pulitzer Prizewinning 

play by Marsha Norman, 

now being produced at Beaver 

Point Hall. Both Dawn Luker (the 

mother) and Karin Klockstad have 

art seen 

put out strong performances 

before, and last Saturday's 

production proclaimed the 

excellence and versatility of both. 

The play was ably directed by Alex 

Bruhanski who has rapidly 

established himself here as a 

director, actor and teacher. 

Part of the dramatic tension of 

the play circles the issue of 

acceptable solutions to intolerable 

life situations. The older 

generation choosing a living death, 

the younger contemplating an 

actual one. The desperation of 

each is such that one begins to 

understand that both are suicidal. 

The set (designed by Eric Booth) 

is a depressingly convincing 

environment. At the conclusion 

one felt uneasy about intruding on 

the fictional boundaries. It is 

always a great adventure to drive 

down to Beaver Point Hall, 

especially when one has the 

opportunity to experience fine 

theatre. The production will repeat 

this coming weekend — on Friday, 

Saturday and Sunday, at 8:00 pm.

which may give the audience time

The Ogedengbe Drummers 

from Nigeria was our second event 

of the night. This energetic group 

was busy all day. In the morning, 

they accompanied a dance 

workshop; in the afternoon, a 

hand drum workshop; and, in the 

evening, a concert and dance. 

Their intensity and rhythm were 

contagious and all events were well 

attended with enthusiastic reports 

following.

Gallery to highlight works 

by two transplanted artists 

Two artists adept in a variety of 

disciplines will visit Salt Spring in 

early August to display their 

works at the Ewart Gallery of Fine 

Arts. 

The two-man show — running 

from August 1 to 30 — will 

feature Kiff Holland, born and 

trained artistically in South Africa, 

and Alan Wylie, a Glasgowborn 

artist who received his 

masters degree in fine arts from 

that city's School of Art. 

Both Holland and Wylie will be 

in attendance at the gallery (at 

175 Salt Spring Way) on Friday 

and Saturday, August 1 and 2. An 

official opening will be held 

Friday. 

Holland received his formal art 

training at South Africa's University 

of Witwatersrand and at the 

Johannesburg School of Art before 

immigrating to Canada in 

1975. 

He says he was "immediately 

captivated" by Canada's soft 

colours and lights, which he 

found so different from the harsh 

brilliance of Africa. 

Consequently, Holland's palette 

changed from warm earth 

tones to the cool, ethereal values 

found in his present paintings. 

Holland's work is finely drawn 

and textured but his style is more 

determined by a fascination for 

light and texture, colour and 

mass. He says he does not impose 

boundaries on his works; he 

might develop the same form in a 

landscape as in a classical stilllife. 

The artist works in watercolours, 

oils and acrylic paint. He 

has received awards from the 

Federation of Canadian Artists 

and the North-West Watercolour 

Society, and has exhibited at the 

British Institute of Painters in 

Watercolour and the Royal 

Society of British Artists. 

Alan Wylie, meanwhile, is 

considered a master of mixed 

media. He uses a time-consuming 

technique of build-ups and glazes 

involving first painting in acryl-

ics, then overpainting in oils. The 

result is an unusual depth of 

colour, intensity and quality. 

Wylie, who is also an outstanding 

watercolourist, has been 

painting since the age of 16 years. 

Currently, he is working on the 

largest mural ever attempted in 

Chemainus. 

After leaving the Glasgow of 

his youth, Wylie settled in Canada, 

in 1967, and has since become 

one of the country's most successful 

artists. His paintings are 

shown in galleries across Canada 

and his works have been sold to 

many private and corporate collections 

in North America, 

Europe, Australia and the Middle 

East. 

"Alan is a craftsman with an 

astonishing eye for detail," says a 

statement from Ewart Gallery. 

"He can make the viewer see 

what he saw, and feel the warmth 

or cold of the subject. Each 

subject is approached with a 

tenderness and unreserved attention.

Reverend and Mrs. Shepherd accept gifts 

Bishop's address leaves 

mark on Galiano residents

On Sunday, July 27 the visit of 

the Right Reverend Ronald 

Shepherd, Bishop of B.C. to the 

parish of St. Margaret of Scotland 

on Galiano reached its 

culmination in the address which 

he gave to the congregation at the 

10:30 am celebration of the 

Eucharist. 

His message of the love and 

friendship available to all within 

the Christian community, together 

with the limitless potential of faith 

embodied in the Gospel message, 

"ask and you will receive," will 

long be remembered. 

The Bishop and Mrs. Shepherd 

were joyfully welcomed on their 

return visit to Galiano, hopefully 

an annual event which is already a 

tradition. The Bishop was also the 

celebrant at an 8 am Eucharist and, 

as he told the congregation, 

seemed to have been actively 

engaged in missionary work at La 

Berengerie between that and the 

parish supper which was held on 

the previous evening at the North 

Galiano Community Hall. 

The supper provided the Bishop 

and his wife, Ann, with the 

opportunity to meet and talk with 

several members of the parish. The 

meal was superb, thanks to the 

planning and hard work of Wendy 

Roberts and a committee which 

included the stalwart North End 

combination of Dorothy and 

Alistair Ross, Audrey Cook, Edith 

Wishart and DaVis Russell, with a

from Barbara Scoones and 

Margaret Edgar. Delightful flower 

arrangements were the work of 

Kathy Benger and Arm Haksi. 

A highlight of the evening was 

the entertainment by Stephen 

Newton, in which he told the story 

of the Three Fish with assistance 

from the audience enhanced by the 

performance of the keeper of the 

lighthouse, Geoff Howard, on the 

stupid fish. Steve drew from the 

audience an incredible band which 

he said consisted of the Andrew 

Sisters, Benny Goodman, 

Groucho Marx, Bob Hope etc., 

and the conductor, reputed to be 

Duke Ellington, looked 

remarkably like a Bishop in a top 

hat reading an ear splitting 

performance of Moonlight Bay. 

Great fun was had by all. 

The Bishop and Ann Shepherd 

were presented with North 

Galiano tee-shirts as a memento of 

their visit. In his reponse, the 

Bishop referred to a memento 

carried back from Galiano last 

year, the long, sea-smoothed trunk 

of a fir tree which is now erected as 

a flag pole at his home, Easter Hill, 

on Salt Spring. The waving flag 

should be visible, on Galiano, from 

Retreat Cove. 

This was a most memorable and 

moving pastoral visit. The warmth 

and caring concern of the Bishop 

and Mrs. Shepherd will continue 

to nourish this small corner of the 

Diocese for a long time to come.

party on July 19 on the scenic 

grounds at Waterlea. About 300 

people were served sandwiches, 

cakes and tea in the shade of a 

weeping willow on lawns that 

stretched down to the sea. 

While some guests relaxed by 

having tea, children were entertained 

by clowns and games and 

adults browsed at the book table 

and "Attics Treasure" booth. 

Home-baked goods, hasti-notes 

and bedding plants donated by 

the Fulawka's were on sale. A 

booth with literature on disarmament 

provided information from 

the World Federalist Organization. 

Rex Jordan, Orval Johnson and 

Joyce Sky provided music 

throughout the afternoon, playing 

favourite melodies on guitar, 

fiddle, bass and accordian. 

Ann Fairweather, a member of 

the Anglican Ladies Guild who 

organized the event, said $1,300 

was raised at this year's tea,. The 

money from the event provides 

funds for improvements to the 

church and rectory. 

Fairweather noted that organizers 

have been blessed with good 

weather over the 57 years the tea 

has been held, and that everyone 

involved works well together. A 

good deal of organization is 

required to make the tea a 

success, and she estimated about 

50 people help in some way. 

"And, of course, we couldn't 

do without the Harker's garden," 

she said, calling attention to the* 

spacious yard provided every year 

at Waterlea.

Conference raised awareness of history, culture 

The Passport 86 conference, 

held on Galiano from July 22 to 27, 

made island history. Organized by 

Edrie Holloway, the event 

smoothly combined Galiano 

history and culture, and a theme of 

international importance — 

seamanship, trade and the flag. 

Speakers came from Norway, 

Spain, New York, Los Angeles, 

Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, 

Alberta and B.C. to contribute 

research on Canadian maritime 

history. 

"Our objectives were met 

beyond expectation," said Eric 

Sager, a member of the Canadian 

Nautical Research Society after 

the business meeting on Sunday. 

The Underwater Archaeology 

Society of B.C. also attended, 

contributing a synopsis of present 

investigation in coastal waters. 

Among the conference

Historian Joe C.W. Armstrong

which he claims will pale anything 

we've ever heard of old Sam 

before. 

Christa Weiss has proven her 

organizational talents once again 

(see Bateman lecture, July 16) in 

having put the event into motion. 

• Galiano Homes and Gardens: 

Margaret Robson led three 

carloads of people to several 

homes and gardens on the island 

on July 22. The choice covered a 

spectrum of landscape architecture; 

for example, the Frewer's 

terraced garden with log walls, and 

Annie Breddles' Galiano Gardens, 

a masterpiece of levels, ponds, 

walkways, various moss ground 

covers and plants. 

There were interesting aspects to 

every garden visited, and noted in 

particular were Margaret's fruitbearing 

fig trees, Hans and 

Donna's new orchard, the 

Switzer's flowers and Dorothy 

Lupton's contemplative park and 

sculptured trees. 

• Slide collection: As a 

contribution to the Historical and 

Cultural Society event, Marie 

Claire Von Hausmann presented a 

collection of slides taken of as 

many human aspects on Galiano 

Island as possible. Specifically, 

they are a picture show of "what we 

are, what we do, everything about 

now." 

Marie Claire says she had "lots 

of fun" over the last few months 

approaching and taking pictures of 

talented people, businesses, clubs, 

etc. which made up the visual 

display. She personally took about 

200 slides and delegated the rest, 

for a total of 480. 

Due to an oversight, the slide 

show was poorly attended. The 

importance of the substance and 

what it represents cannot be 

overstated, however. Clearly, this 

collection — and ultimately the 

names in it — will make Galiano 

history. Already, individuals and 

groups have requested that the 

slide show be presented to their 

select audiences, indicating a 

future consideration for 

documentation of this nature. 

• Coastal Excursions: Wendy 

Roberts and Tony Kingscote led 

two groups of nature enthusiasts 

on intertidal excursions July 22 

and 23. They walked along the 

shore of Montague Harbour and 

Coon Bay at low tide and 

examined sea life on various 

substrates, from fine mud to large 

boulders. Several specied of 

seaweeds and clams were studied 

and a couple of mud burrows were 

investigated. 

Tony and Wendy are a team 

which has volunteered five years at 

the Vancouver Aquarium and has 

led walks for two years on Galiano. 

• The Activity Center was 

tastefully decorated throughout 

the conference by flags of nations 

represented and involved, and by 

local art, including Kirt Ziwicki's 

stained glass centerpiece. All meals 

were prepared by the Galiano 

Peace Group, Galiano Pre-School 

Society and Galiano Parents' 

Advisory. 

• Conclusion: One hopeful 

outcome of the conference is an 

awareness of both history and 

culture in our social environment.

Interaction between academics, 

"amateurs" and interested people 

was just a beginning. 

There is talk of possibly 

publishing and circulating 

highlights of the papers given, and 

there is always the broader goal of 

revamping history education at all 

levels across Canada. 

Gulf Golf 

The annual Grandmothers'Golf 

Tournament took place last 

Tuesday, July 22, at the Galiano 

Gof and Country Club. Doreen 

Stanton, lady captain for the club, 

provided the following list of

It's a busy summer for sports, 

but the ladies of the Golf Club are 

still managing to take time out to 

bake two pies each for their booth 

at this weekend's fiesta. 

Art Display 

La Berengerie is hosting an art 

display by Vancouverite Lorraine 

Calame Hill. 

Butterflies, rainbows and pale 

watercolours are predominant in 

these paintings of mixed media 

(gouache, ink, acrylic, pastels). 

Lorraine's style is pronounced and 

consistent although her subject

reflects change, or a positive 

transformation. In child-like 

imagery, she conveys a 

sophisticated message through the 

symbolism of what is seen. 

Butterflies are change, rainbows 

are a connection or reconciliation 

with a part of herself once lost. 

Dreams, memory, interesting 

sights and sounds, music, poetry 

and prose are "a source of 

inspiration," she says. "I let the 

images grow in my mind until 1 am 

ready to put them down. It seems 

that whatever I respond to at a 

particular moment is an echo of 

my state of mind as well, and when 

I do a piece of work this state of 

mind is also captured and 

recorded." 

Lorraine has a B.A. in English 

literature and philosophy from the 

University of Oklahoma, and a 

diploma from the Emily Carr 

College of Art and Design. She is 

presently a graduate student in 

counselling psychology at UBC, 

and studies sign language. 

Lorraine has been coming to 

Galiano for 20 years and has 

previously shown her art at La 

Berengerie. This how continues 

until September 14. 

Coming Events 

• Lion's Club Annual Fiesta. 

Saturday, August 2. This is the big 

event oh Galiano. The pancake 

breakfast at Sturdies Bay starts at 

8 am (and, correction from last 

week's report, ends at 10 am), the 

canoe-running race begins shortly 

thereafter, there is a parade to the 

Burrill Road Fiesta Grounds at 

9:30, then the whole day of food 

and fun. Scottish dancing, pies, 

crafts, Bartering Bob, kites for the 

kids, sushi, games, etc.

May Forester was the lucky

local resident won the raffle. She 

said the planter was so big that 

anyone travelling off the island 

with it would have had difficulty. 

Bishop Ronald Shepherd from 

Victoria arrived for tea in the 

latter part of the afternoon, and 

Winifred Spalding "held court" 

at her table, much to the delight 

of nearby guests.

Memories, insights to be shared 

On August 9, story-teller Hanna 

Chusid will arrive at the 

Driftwood Centre on North Pender 

in a horse and carriage. As 

soon as the Farmer's Market 

closes down at 11 am, she will 

gather people into a story-telling 

circle to have some fun with 

memories and insights the old 

and young can share. 

"The story circle is a way for 

people to realize that everyone 

who is here knows something 

about the beauties and sorrow' 

and richness and colorfulness of 

life on Pender Island," she said. 

Chusid, an American with a 

Russian-Jewish background who 

has lived in B.C. for 11 years, has 

been hired by the Pender Island 

Museum Society to conduct storytelling 

sessions for three 

consecutive Saturdays in August. 

She is being featured as the 

society launches a campaign to 

raise funds towards establishing a 

museum on Pender. 

Money will be collected 

through donations, and the museum 

society is hopeful people 

will come out to take part in the 

sharing of memories. Chusid, 

whose main interest lies in le 

gends and the knowledge to be 

gained from our ancestors, plans 

to tell some Jewish stories. She 

may also tell a Cowichan Indian 

legend about the origin of man, 

and possibly some stories about 

Pender's past. 

However, Chusid said group 

participation is part of the fun, 

and those who come can expect to 

have the talking stick passed their 

way. 

Depending on the turnout to 

Chusid's story circles on August 

9, 16 and 23 people can expect to 

be part of one group or a number 

of small groups. Chusid said she 

can handle any number of participants, 

and encouraged other Gulf 

Island residents to attend as well. 

She is hopeful that those who 

do attend will plan to stay for the 

two-hour session, suggesting that 

to arrive late or leave early would 

be like going to see a movie 

mid-way through. 

And if the idea catches on, she 

sees it as something that could be 

continued once her sessions are 

finished. For example, if the

Martiner were married at the 

Community Hall Saturday. 

Mayne Islander Victor Hunt performed 

the ceremony, which was 

relaxed and humorous. 

Both bride and groom had five 

attendents. Mary Jane Davidson 

was matron of honour, and bridesmaids 

were Sam Crooks, Dina 

Koreman, Kelly Crooks and Lana 

Corkill. Martiner's best man was 

Curtis Daily. His groomsmen 

included Kevin and Peter Martiner, 

Jaimie Carpenter and Clifford 

Crooks. 

Michael Hayes was master of 

ceremonies; the Women's Club 

catered a sit down meal for the 

140 guests; Betty Carpenter organized 

the decorations; and Mr. 

Music provided the sound for the 

dance. Hayes, who presented the 

toast to the bride, has known 

Crooks for several years — teaching 

her at Saturna School and 

then housing her on Salt Spring, 

while she attended high school. 

People were heard to comment 

on the relaxed atmosphere of the 

wedding, in which traditional 

customs were observed. 

• The fast-approaching art show 

is slated to run August 2, 3 and 4 

from 11 am to 10 pm on Saturday, 

and from 11 am to 5 pm on 

Sunday and Monday. Contributors

Market raises school group funds 

The parent-teacher club on 

Pender Island is sponsoring a flea 

market every Sunday from noon 

to 3 pm at the school, to raise 

funds for next year. 

Gail Jamieson, the group's 

past-president, said members 

have brought in between $30 and 

$40 at each of the four markets 

held this July. 

In the past, she added, the 

group has attempted to raise 

funds through dances but found 

that there is too' much work 

involved for the financial gain. 

"It's hard work ... because you 

put a lot of effort into these 

dances, and you could never 

charge enough to cover the work 

involved," she said. 

Funds raised in the past have 

gone toward such things as an 

adventure playground, asphalt 

for a hopscotch area, and basketball 

backboards.

Residents urged to comply 

with closure regulations 

PENDER ISLAND — RCMP 

Constable Brian Brown reminds 

residents and visitors of the 

current fire closure and asks their 

co-operation in obeying the regulations. 

He said the fire hazard is 

quite high, and RCMP will lay 

charges against anyone who violates 

closures. 

Brown said volunteer firemen 

on North Pender issued warnings 

on two occasions last week. He 

noted that one resident in the 

Clam Bay area did not co-operate 

until RCMP Corporal Thorogood 

came to enforce the closure. The 

man did not believe the warning 

from the fire department, although 

Brown emphasized that 

volunteer firemen have the authority 

to enforce the regulation. 

"Everybody's got garbage and 

scrap they have to get rid of, and 

it's just right now that it's not 

safe to do it." said Brown. He 

added that, at present, stump and 

garbage fires seem to be more of 

a problem than campfires. 

At a North Pender Fire Department 

meeting last week, RCMP 

agreed to assist fire officials in 

monitoring the fire closure in a 

concerted effort to prevent big 

fires on the island. Brown said 

Pender Island seems to be having 

more problems with enforcing the 

closure than Mayne Island. 

"It's a big problem here. I have 

seen a fire last year where an 

entire lawn was eaten up," said 

Brown.

Pender resident Bernie Bastille 

suffered minor injuries when a 

police 

report 

log fell and trapped him for about 

one hour last Saturday. When 

RCMP arrived, ferry employees 

and family had helped Bastille out 

from under the log. The incident 

took place on the south shore of 

Otter Bay. 

"He was doing some wood 

cutting and a log rolled over on 

his leg and trapped him," said 

Brown. 

A 35mm Pentax camera was 

reported lost from the Pender 

archaeological dig on July 22. The 

camera, valued at $300 and 

belonging to a Victoria woman, 

was in a black case and contained 

a completed roll of film.

Island woman 

left impressive 

service record 

Long time Salt Spring Island 

resident Roma Sturdy died recently 

at Lady Minto Hospital. 

She was in her 80th year. 

Mrs. Sturdy is survived by her 

son, John Rhodes Sturdy, and 

grand-daughter Katie Roma 

Sturdy, both of Toronto, Ontario. 

A Salt Spring resident since 

1951, Mrs. Sturdy was known as 

an active community member and 

volunteer. 

Her stay on Salt Spring first 

found Mrs. Sturdy working on the 

staff of Lady Minto Hospital, then 

with the Gulf Islands School 

District. 

In retirement, she sought and 

won a seat on the school board, 

where she was involved in the 

creation of the high school building. 

She also found time to serve 

as secretary for the Legion and as 

a member of the Golf Club board 

of directors. Other involvements 

included work with the Anglican 

Church, the library, the Community 

Centre and numerous groups 

and committees formed for island 

improvement. 

Mrs. Sturdy was also instrumental 

in the organization of 

Meals on Wheels, a project she 

continued to serve for many 

years. 

In addition, she was well known 

as a benefactor to many students, 

helping at fund-raising dances, 

car washes, bake sales and bazaars. 

She was also active in 

French immersion classes. 

Sturdy's friends say she will 

likely be best remembered for her 

work as a counsellor to senior 

dttizens: "Roma had the knack of 

smoothing out the vagaries of red 

tape. And if she didn't know how 

to do it, she'd soon discover with 

whom to speak, and then get it 

done." 

Mrs. Sturdy was predeceased 

by her husband, a retired journalist, 

author and free-lance writer. 

During the Second World War, 

when her husband was serving in 

the Royal Canadian Navy, she 

accompanied him to Hollywood 

when he was assigned to the duty 

of naval adviser during the filming 

of a movie about corvettes in 

the Atlantic. He was also responsible 

for part of the movie script. 

Memorial services for Mrs. 

Sturdy were to be held today 

(Wednesday, July 30) at St. 

Mark's Church, beginning at 1 

Dm.

Building pace showing signs of slowing down 

To the mid-way point of 1986, 

construction activity in the Gulf 

Islands is well ahead of levels 

reached in the same period of 

1985. However, building permit 

figures released last week by the 

Capital Regional District (CRD) 

also show that the pace is slowing 

down. 

Following a trend that first 

surfaced this May, the value of 

construction activity and the 

CRD's subsequent permit revenues 

showed a slight decline — on 

both Salt Spring and the Outer 

Islands — over figures for corresponding 

periods in 1985. The 

number of permits issued in 

June, however, is up this year as 

compared to 1985. 

The statistics for June, 1986, 

with figures for the same period 

in 1985 in brackets, are as 

follows: 

• Salt Spring — permits issued, 

52 (34); value of construction, 

$391,290 ($502,880); and permit 

revenue, $4,383 ($5,464). 

• Outer Islands — permits issued, 


$560,637 ($672,431); and permit 

revenue, $5,987 ($6,981). 

Statistics for this June also 

show that the value of building 

activity is highest on the Outer 

Islands, while more permits were 

issued on Salt Spring. Galiano 

Island led the way on the Outer 

Islands this June, registering 12 

permits for activity worth 

$227,254. 

Over the entire Gulf Islands, 

meanwhile, the number of permits 

issued in June, 1986, increased 

to 88 from the 65 recorded 

in June, 1985; construction 

value fell to $951,927 in 1986 from 

$1,175 million in June, 1985; and 

permit revenue dropped to 

$10,375 this June from $12,382 in 

June, 1985. 

Despite the declines, year-todate 

figures still show levels to 

June, 1986, ahead of those reached 

in the same period of 1985. 

Breakdowns for the two periods, 

with 1985 data in brackets, are as 

follows: 

• Salt Spring — permits issued, 


$2,656 million ($1,947 million); 

and permit revenue, $31,355 

($19,981). 

• Outer Islands — permits issued, 


$2.32 million ($1,866 million); and 

permit revenue, $24,774 

($20,415). 

Comparing overall regional 

performances, the number of 

permits issued is up from 274 in 

1985 to 394 this year; value of 

construction jumped from $3,813 

million in 1985 to $4,967 to June, 

1986; and permit revenue is up

down through the years 

Twenty-five years ago 

• The executive of the Salt Spring 

Island Chamber of Commerce 

met with the Hon. Earle C. 

Westwood and Ron Worley, representing 

the B.C. Toll Ferry 

Authority, to discuss the new 

ferry service for the Gulf Islands. 

However, neither visitor could 

answer questions about frequency 

of service, the cost to users or 

whether new boats would be 

added. 

• Real estate ad: Special this 

week, a lovely waterfront home 

on four acres of park-like woodland. 

Over 400 feet of waterfront 

with nice beach. Full price 

$14,000. 

• A barn dance social evening was 

held on the Parson's Estate on 

Scott Road to celebrate the paving 

of one-eighth of a mile of Scott 

Road. Music for the event was 

provided by the Dick's TV combination 

of gramaphone and loudspeaker. 

Making the dance unique 

was the fact that it was 

actually held in a barn. 

• The Lions Club was offering 

membership in the Gulf Islands 

Ambulance Society for $5 a year 

per family. Membership provided 

free ambulance service on Salt 

Spring Island and to hospitals in 

Victoria, Duncan and Nanaimo. 

Many residents had taken advantage 

of the membership offer and 

the Lions Club expressed gratitude 

for that support. 

Twenty years ago 

• A Salt Spring Island youth was 

rescued from the waters off 

Vesuvius Bay by the Vesuvius 

Queen ferry. Hunter Gordon of 

Ganges was sailing a 12-foot boat 

which capsized. He was not hurt 

in the incident. 

• The Galiano Centennial Committee 

has asked that the landing 

place for the voyageurs — a 

provincial 1966 centennial celebration 

event — be changed to 

Montague Marine Park from 

Sturdies Bay. At least 100 canoeists, 

dressed as historic voyageurs, 

were on their way from 

Fort St.James in northern B.C., 

down the Stuart and Fraser rivers 

and across the Strait of Georgia to 

Victoria. The Galiano stop was on 

their route and the locals were 

concerned about toilet facilities. 

"We discovered the six acres of 

Bellhouse Park is on solid rock 

and you can't dig big holes to put 

under the biffs ..." 

• Real estate ad: seven and one

• The Island Social Credit League 

held a picnic at St. Mary Lake, 

with Saanich-and-the-Islands 

MLA John Tisdale and his wife 

attending as guests of honour. 

Fifteen years ago 

• Outer Islands residents were 

assured by Harry Lane of B.C. Tel 

that they did not have to use long 

distance to call between islands. 

Salt Spring Island subscribers to 

the phone service, however, were 

required to pay the toll to call the 

Outer Islands. 

• House numbering on Salt 

Spring Island was being considered 

by a committee composed of 

members of the Salt Spring Island 

Planning Association, the Chamber 

of Commerce and the ratepayers 

association. Allotting numbers 

to houses on the island has 

been a concern of the volunteer 

fire department and the emergency 

ambulance service being run 

by the Lions Club. Some residents 

opposed the idea, calling numbering 

an imposition. 

• Dfummond Centennial Park at 

the head of Fulford Harbour was 

opened with an appropriate ceremony. 

The park was donated to 

the Salt Spring Island community 

by Captain L.D.B. Drummond, 

shortly before his death, for a 

play and sports area for children. 

Mrs. Drummond took part in the 

ceremony, which was followed by 

entertainment that included an 

Indian dancing team and an 

appearance by the May Queen 

and her princesses. 

Ten years ago 

• Salt Spring Islanders were told 

that positive government action 

on the proposal to install an 

experimental sewer system on the 

island is expected by the end of 

July or August of this year.

George Heinekey said in a letter 

to the department of municipal 

affairs that the sewer system is a 

major problem in the Ganges 

area. 

• Fire Chief Kelly Hanke issued a 

warning to Salt Spring Island 

residents about storing gasoline 

on private property. Some people 

were buying gasoline on Vancouver 

Island at 79 cents per 

gallon, somewhat lower than the 

87 cents being charged on the 

island. The fire chief said special 

permits were needed to store 

gasoline on property. 

• Saturna Island's community 

plan was approved by the executive 

council, Hugh Curtis, minister 

of municipal affairs and MLA 

for Saanich-Islands, said. The 

community plan was established 

as a basis for zoning and subdivision 

bylaws. Saturna joined Salt 

Spring, Galiano and South Pender 

Islands in having such a plan. 

• The new owners of the Mayne 

Inn on Mayne Island stress that 

expansion plans for the resort do 

not include condominiums. Guy 

O'Brien, president of Realacorp 

Financial Ltd., said the newest 

proposal for the expansion of the 

inn includes only 22 additional 

units, which will be sold under 

strata title for financing purposes 

only. The purchasers of the units 

become, in effect, part owners of 

the resort, which must be operated 

as a hotel in order to take 

advantage of federal tax shelters.
