I’m sure you’ve all heard about the year of faith
promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI…I found information
from various sources and I hope it answers some of your
questions:
What is the Year of Faith?
Pope Benedict XVI has set aside a special year for Catholics
throughout the world to rediscover, and share with others, the
precious gift of Faith entrusted to the Church and the
personal gift of faith that we have each received from God
the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
When is the Year of Faith?
Pope Benedict XVI has decreed that the Catholic Church will
observe the Year of Faith between 11 October 2012 and 24
November 2013.
What is special about the dates for the Year of Faith?
Pope Benedict has chosen to open the Year of Faith on the 11
October 2012 because that date is the anniversary of two
important events in the life of the Catholic Church: The 11th
of October is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the
Second Vatican Council (11 October 1962 - 8 December
1965). The 11th October is also the 20th anniversary of the
publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church by
Blessed John Paul II. The Year of Faith will close on 24
November 2013, the Solemn Feast of Christ the King
throughout the world.
Why is the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council so
important that it marks the opening of the Year of Faith?
Pope Benedict explains that though the Second Vatican
Council occurred half a century ago it remains ‘the great
grace bestowed on the Church in the twentieth century’ that
is ‘a sure compass by which to take our bearings in the
century now beginning.’ The Holy Father is also convinced
that the Second Vatican Council, if interpreted and
implemented according to the mind of the Church stretching
back to the Apostles, ‘can be and can become increasingly
powerful for the ever necessary renewal of the Church’.
(Porta Fidei, 5). This is why an important component of the
Year of Faith will be reflection and rediscovery of the riches
contained in the texts of Vatican II.
What are Pope Benedict’s hopes for each one of us during
the Year of Faith?
The Holy Father wants us to rediscover the journey of faith
so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed
enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ. He wants us to
rediscover a taste for feeding ourselves on the word of God,
faithfully handed down by the Church, and on the bread of
life, offered as sustenance for his disciples (cf. Jn 6:51). To
take the opportunity to read the documents of Vatican II
correctly, help them become widely known and take them to
heart as important and normative texts of the Magisterium.
To approach the Year of Faith as a time of purification for the
Church and for individuals, a summons to an authentic and
renewed conversion to the Lord. To intensify our reflection
of faith, so we acquire a more conscious and vigorous
adherence to the Gospel, especially at a time of profound
change such as humanity is currently experiencing. To
profess our faith in the Risen Lord in our cathedrals and in
the churches of the whole world; in our homes and among
our families, so that everyone may continue next column
St. Ronald, Clinton Township
For many years I had the hardest time appreciating St. Paul.
I always thought I would not like him if I met him and that
was probably true but as I read his letters more, I figured
maybe if I knew him better I would change my mind. Guess
what? I did. St. Paul stands tall among the heroes of the world
for his single-minded focus. He only had one goal and
that was to give the message of Christ to as many people as
possible and once given, continue to nurture every single
community with letters and by sending other evangelists to
help them grow in faith. His letters are sometimes downright
cranky like an annoyed parent but, always like a parent’s, they
were motivated by love. As you read his letters, you are struck
by the depth of that love.
That is what Christ does to people. He truly is the Light of
the World. He has shone the love of God to us and lighted the
darkest corners of the world and gave us hope. If we believe
that, really believe it, then we ought to be make an effort to
share it. Surely the world needs that hope. We might not be
St. Paul, but we can do our best just as he did.
Carol Lemelin, Worship Coordinator
THIS AND THAT by Dcn. Franz cont from previous column
feel a strong need to know better and to transmit to future
generations the faith of all times. The Holy Father wants the
Year of Faith to arouse in every believer the aspiration to
profess the faith in fullness and with renewed conviction, with
confidence and hope. He wants us to intensify the celebration
of the faith in the liturgy, especially in the Eucharist, which is
“the summit towards which the activity of the Church is
directed; … and also the source from which all its power
flows.” To rediscover the content of the faith that is professed,
celebrated, lived and prayed, and to reflect on the act of faith,
is a task that every believer must make his own, especially in
the course of this Year. In order for us rediscover the content
of the faith, the Holy Father proposes that the Year of Faith
will have to see a concerted effort to rediscover and study the
fundamental content of the faith that receives its systematic
and organic synthesis in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Pope Benedict is clear that faced with the urgent need for the
purification of the Church the ‘one thing that will be of
decisive importance in this Year is retracing the history of our
faith, marked as it is by the unfathomable mystery of the
interweaving of holiness and sin.’ By this the Holy Father
means to encourage each one of us to become familiar with the
great figures of our Faith, from Mary and the Apostles, to the
saints, martyrs, confessors and virgins. Porta Fidei, 13.
Taking up one of the recurring themes of his pontificate, the
Holy Father expresses the hope that the Year of Faith will also
be a good opportunity for each one of us to intensify the
witness of charity, which is faith in action. Pope Benedict
concludes with a beautiful expression of his hopes for us:
‘Intent on gathering the signs of the times in the present of
history, faith commits every one of us to become a living sign
of the presence of the Risen Lord in the world. What the world
is in particular need of today is the credible witness of people
enlightened in mind and heart by the word of the Lord, and
capable of opening the hearts and minds of many to the desire
for God and for true life, life without end.’ Porta Fidei, 15
I hope this guide to frequently asked questions helps.
God Bless, Deacon Franz

THANKSGIVING
FOOD DRIVE
The Thanksgiving Food Drive continues and will
run until Sunday, November 11, 2012.
Please use the “SVdP Thanksgiving Food Drive” envelope that was sent to you in your
September, October and November packet of envelopes to send in your cash or check donation
(payable to St.Vincent de Paul). SVdP will then use the donations to purchase turkeys and
food gift cards for the families we will be helping this Thanksgiving. If you prefer, you may
purchase a food gift card(s) at Meijer or Kroger’s in increments of $10, $20, $25, or $50.
With all the different dietary needs and special diets we have encountered in helping those less
fortunate, we believe giving them the ability to purchase their “holiday meal of choice” is the
best gift we can give them. The amount that each family will receive will depend on the family
size.
Please put your SVdP Thanksgiving Food Drive donations in the collection baskets during
Mass or drop them off in the office.
If you have any questions, feel free to call the parish office at 792-1190.
Harley-Davidson And Pope Benedict Mark 110th Anniversary
Celebration Milestone
ROME, Oct. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ - Next June, tens of thousands of Harley-Davidson riders and fans from around
the globe are expected to make their way to Italy's capital city to celebrate Harley-Davidson's 110th Anniversary and the shared
passion for freedom that unites riders everywhere.
Today, Pope Benedict XVI along with Willie G. Davidson, grandson of one of Harley-Davidson's founders and his son, Bill
Davidson, Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum, launched the countdown to Harley-Davidson's 110th Anniversary event
in Rome, June 13-16, 2013, by presenting two commemorative motorcycle gas tanks to the Pope for a blessing. The tanks will be
signed by Pope Benedict, Willie G. and Bill, and mounted on two motorcycles - one will return to the company's hometown of
Milwaukee, and displayed at the Harley-Davidson Museum, while the other will be auctioned to support the Good Samaritan
Foundation.
Highlights of Harley-Davidson's 110th Anniversary Celebration in Rome next year include a party in the Port of Ostia, a parade
through the heart of Rome, two headlining concerts at Stadio Olimpico and a papal bike blessing at St. Peter's Square. "We're
anticipating next year's celebration in Rome to be one of the largest events we've ever held outside the U.S. "That is a strong
testament to our continued global transformation as we respond to our growing fan base all over the world." The year-long
celebration features 12 anniversary experiences the company will bring to existing motorcycle events in global markets through
September 2013. For more information, Harley-Davidson fans are invited to join the celebration online where they can share their
personal stories and riding experiences on Facebook, Twitter with the hashtag #HD110, and at www.h-d.com/110 . The website
features details about the 110th Anniversary events and content posted from fans around the world.
Let’s see, how much vacation time I have next year and how do I get my motorcycle to Rome…hey, maybe the Pope will go for a
ride with me. That would be a stitch, Deacon Harley and the Pope…go figure. God Bless, Dcn. Franz
News Kim Jacob
Wow! We had a great turnout for the Youth Day Open House.
I am very pleased with the number of youth that signed up to
be a part of Youth Ministry here. To reiterate what I said in
church last Sunday that as a parish we need to make every
youth member feel welcome at every mass/function. The
Catholic Bishops of the United States call parishes to become
“youth friendly communities”. A youth friendly parish values
youth by making them feel welcome, listening to them,
responding to their needs with age appropriate programming,
and supports youth with “prayer, time, facilities, and money”.
Secondly, the parish sees youth as resources by empowering
gifts of youth, provides meaningful roles for youth in the
community, and acknowledges their efforts and contributions.
Lastly, the parish should encourage intergenerational
relationships by connecting youth to role models/ mentors and
by including youth in the life of the parish: prayer, learning,
serving and, celebrating.
Middle School Ministry will meet this
Tuesday night from 7:45 to 8:30 in room
103. High School Youth Group will meet
tonight from 6pm to 8pm in the Hall.
Bring your friends and your enthusiasm! Have a blessed week!
