6 AGNewS Sobey Art Award at ROM Canada’s contemporary art community gathered at the Royal ontario Museum on october 1 to celebrate the passion and talent of Canada’s young contemporary artists and to honour Tim Lee, winner of the 2008 Sobey art award. Commenting on Lee’s selection, the Curatorial Panel for the 2008 Sobey art award stated, “Lee’s work brings together formalism and conceptualism; its visual impact always exceeding the multiple levels that go into it. His work is a meditation on the unreliability of vision and the shifting nature of identity. Nocturne The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia was very pleased to take part in the first annual Nocturne: Art at Night. This event attracted thousands of people to galleries and museums in Halifax including more than 3000 to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. The october 18th event set a new single day attendance record for the AGNS. The Gallery looks forward to participating in the event again this year which is scheduled for october 17th, 2009. Annual AGNS Gala on November 1, 2008 the AGNS held its annual Gala. This wonderful evening was an important fund raising event for the AGNS. Both Flight Dreams and Joe Fafard were well received by visitors to the AGNS. Flight Dreams will be shown at the AGNS western Branch this autumn, which will see the AGNS celebrate the International Air Show taking place in Yarmouth this fall. AGNS Takes Hockey on the Road After a successful run in edmonton, arena: road Game has been split and on view in Montreal at the Just for Laughs Museum and in Yarmouth at the AGNS western Branch. In Montreal the exhibition opened in connection with the NHL All Star game and around the celebration of the Montreal Canadiens‘ centennial celebrations. A look at the exhbition ARENA: Road Game and the installation of Graeme Patterson’s 10 Point Game during the opening in Yarmouth. Maud Lewis Play to Take the Stage at the AGNS The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is very pleased to be hosting a new Maud Lewis play this summer at the AGNS. This play, written and produced by Greg Thompson, was inspired by his visit here during his production of the fantastic Marilyn Monroe play. Annual Day Trip The AGNS Annual Day Trip will take place on June 6, 2009, includes lunch at Rhubarb in Indian Harbour, and visits to 2 galleries in Peggy’s Cove, and to the studios of 7 artists in east Dover and Indian Harbour, including John Little and Brian Ateyo. Goodbye Sue Tingley After 21 years with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Sue Tingley will be retiring. on page 29 Sue offers a reflection of her time here at the Gallery. we offer Sue all the very best in her retirement and look forward to seeing her back at the AGNS as a member. Summer School of the Arts 2009 The Summer School of the Arts has a long tradition of providing high-quality arts programming for children and youth from ages 3 to teens.
