Never before has the art de la table, in the French manner,
had such a resounding international success. Thanks to
Haviland, Limoges porcelain enjoys a prestigious reputation
all over the world. From the court of Empress Eugénie to the
royal Moroccan court, from Germany to Japan, Haviland
has served some of the leading members of royalty, as well as
heads of State.
The supreme example of a French firm, Haviland nevertheless
has its roots in the United States. In 1842, David Haviland
discovered by chance a plate of an extraordinary quality
and beauty. Fascinated by his find, the American decided to
produce this delicate porcelain, and his research led him to
France, and more precisely, Limoges.
Impressed by the French savoir-faire, he opened a porcelain
factory with the assistance of his two sons Charles Edward
and Theodore. His idea was to produce what he called “the
white gold of Limoges” and to create outstanding pieces.
Haviland soon became the ultimate reference.
Thanks to his success, Haviland was able to collaborate with
some of the most famous artists, including Vasily Kandinsky,
Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dali, who contributed their
creativity and originality to the porcelain he produced.
These artistic personalities have enhanced the cosmopolitan
dimension of the porcelain Company.
Haviland is an integral part of the prestige and elegance of
the Ritz Paris. To the great satisfaction of everyone concerned,
these two leading members of French tradition met nearly one
hundred years ago. In 1912, Haviland became the official
and privileged supplier of the hotel. Today, to celebrate High
Tea, served in the afternoon at the hotel, Haviland and
the Ritz Paris have created a teacup in a limited edition,
inspired by the Imperial service. Accompanied by a selection
of delicious Ritz Escoffier jams, the cup is sold exclusively at
the Ritz Paris, as well as in the Haviland boutique at 6 Rue
A travers
The great lady of modernism emerges under a new light in
this rich circuit. When Charlotte Perriand, the photographer,
guides Charlotte Perriand, the furniture designer, the
simplicity is dazzling. Thanks to the 380 photographs and
70 pieces of furniture on display, her talent acquires a new
dimension. Above all, this unusual light reveals a committed
woman who invented a completely different approach to
design. The black and white photos show us a personality
which perfectly incarnates the modernity of the early decades
of the 20 th century. A silhouette freed from fetters, a frank
expression, a boyish haircut, sunbathing topless in Croatia
in 1937: Charlotte Perriand was unquestionably an avantgarde
woman. She was also ahead of her time in the way
she photographed urban landscapes, nature, mountains or
Corsican shepherds in the 1930s. All the images she put
together, sometimes in the form of a photomontage, provided
her with an incredible support for her inspiration. She
internalized these images and interpreted them through
drawings, and then into pieces of furniture. There is no
doubt that she was equal to her peers Le Corbusier and
Pierre Jeanneret in the design and production of streamlined
furniture: shelves, stools and tables that seem to be so
current, even today. Of the peasants she photographed in
the countryside, and the objects she collected from nature,
she retained an unpolished and genuine approach with the
materials she used and her asymmetric shapes. A kind of raw
art, or “art brut”, that she also appreciated in her friend,
the painter Fernand Léger, represented here by several of his
paintings. If the work of Charlotte Perriand arouses so much
admiration, and if her Cloud Bookshelf and Ventaglio Table
have become such great classics and are now highly valued
by the market and collected by international museums, it is
not by chance. In her lifetime, the designer had the capacity
to examine the world around her with great accuracy and to
invent a timeless aestheticism.
A commencer
Petrus », confirme Jean Moueix.
“It was logical for Petrus – an exceptional product – to
associate its image with a luxurious establishment such as
the Ritz Paris because it is frequented by many wine lovers
and connoisseurs who have the opportunity to taste wines
like Petrus” explains Jean Moueix, Managing Director of
Videlot, the sole shareholder and wine merchant, regarding
the presence of the legendary bottle on the wine list of the
luxury hotel. There is no doubt at all that Petrus has become a
legend. The small 11.4 acre estate is unanimously considered
to be the most famous and popular of the Pomerol wines. It
is true, of course, that it enjoys several advantages. To start
with, there is its exceptional land, slightly sloping and with
perfect exposure to the sun. Additionally its subsoil, composed
of spongy clay, guarantees a permanent supply of water during
droughts and protects the vines from hydric stress. “This is the
strength of Petrus”, confirms Jean Moueix.
Jean-Claude Ruet, the Head Sommelier at the Ritz Paris,
shares this opinion. “Petrus is one of the greatest French wines.
It has built up its reputation relatively recently, just after the
Second World War, with historic vintages such as the one of
47, 61, 82 or 90.” On his wine list, Jean-Claude Ruet, who
praises the rather unusual aromas of this precious nectar -
fresh truffles, for instance - particularly acclaims the vintages
from 1994 to 2006. His favourites? The 2000 vintage is, in
his view, an exceptional year, as well as 2005, which will
remain in the cellar for a little while longer, like the 2000
wine that waited patiently for a decade before being included
on the wine list.
Petrus is a highly prized wine, but with an average production
of only 30,000 bottles it obviously cannot satisfy the demand.
But, doesn’t rarity create the exception?

Le reste s’enchaîna naturellement : Ambre Sultan, Fleurs
d’Oranger, Datura Noir, Serge Noire…
He is one of the greatest perfumers, those for whom everything,
or nearly everything, is permitted. His fragrances are unique,
and they resemble him, like an olfactory transcription of
his humour and state of mind, which Serge Lutens unveils
frugally. After several years, he is already familiar with this
luxury. His perfumes have left their mark on the world of
perfumery thanks to their originality and power. The first,
‘Nombre Noir’ created nearly thirty years ago, “sent shock
waves due to its colour and black-on-black presentation”,
he explained. “But it was, above all, ten years later, with
the creation of ‘Feminité du bois’ that I entered into what
I call ‘my perfumes’”. The rest followed naturally: ‘Ambre
Sultan’, ‘Fleurs d’Oranger’, ‘Datura Noir’, ‘Serge Noire’ …
all astonishing fragrances that are now here to stay and which
only Serge Lutens could have created. Since the beginning
of his career, no less than fifty-four perfumes have seen the
light of day.
Presented in the display boutique of the Palais Royal, the
perfumes reveal their mystery little by little. With deep colours
and names rivalling each other in provocation, Serge Lutens
has skilfully injected the right dose of seduction. The names
of his perfumes incarnate the message he wishes to convey.
“Perfume is stronger than I am. It is a novel – untitled –
that no one will read. Before being inhaled, a perfume must
be felt.”
His two latest creations, ‘Vitriol d’Œillet’ and ‘De Profundis’,
are tinged with anger and darkness. At the heart of these two
fragrances lie the carnation and the chrysanthemum.
And what about ‘Vitriol d’Œillet’? “Admittedly, there is
violence, but it is part of each of us. Without it, what would
become of us? Brutality is of another order. It does not see or
guess. But see how this first flower is violent towards itself
and pierces the still white ice of winter in order to find spring
again. When it flowers, the snow drop must surely hurt
itself?” We remain with the image of these flowers and, above
all, with the exquisite fragrances of these two new perfumes.
Serge Lutens, who used to be a makeup man, photographer
and artist, has become a poet through his perfumes.

undeniable role in attracting the numerous jewellers who
have since made the legendary Place Vendôme their home.
In 1893 Frédéric Boucheron was the first to discern the
immense potential of the square, five years before the luxury
hotel opened its doors. Boucheron moved into the former
mansion belonging to the Comtesse de Castiglione, at No. 26.
Legend says that he chose this spot because it was particularly
exposed to the sun, and his jewels could therefore be displayed
in all their brilliance in the show windows. His clients were
seduced by his creations designed in a new style so that they
would stand out against the flashiness of the period.
When he died in 1902, his son Louis took over the business
and continued the savoir-faire that his father had bequeathed
to him. His descendants, in turn, inherited this tradition
while ensuring that they imposed their own personal mark.
Gérard Boucheron, driven by his passion for precious gems,
was influenced by the civilizations he discovered during his
travels throughout the world. He adorned necklaces with
precious stones and engraved emeralds in the style of the
jewellery was revived.
Although this jeweller, which celebrated its 150th anniversary
in 2008, was the first to actually move into the heart of the
square, another jeweller, Mellerio dits Meller, founded in
1613, had moved into the neighbourhood several decades
earlier. In 1815 this firm opened its doors on Rue de la Paix,
the famous thoroughfare that connected Place Vendôme with
the new boulevards, as Napoleon decided in 1806. There
is no doubt that the oldest family firm in Europe, one of
Queen Marie-Antoinette’s jewellers as well as that of Empress
Eugénie, contributed to the success of this historic address.
Mellerio was able to double the number of his clients just
after the Universal Exhibition of 1855, when he presented
his “trembling brooch” in diamonds. The unusual feature
of this piece of jewellery is that it succeeds in reproducing
the natural movement of a bouquet. Today, the fourteenth
generation of the family, Olivier and François Mellerio, are at
the reins of this venerable firm, which has had the privilege of
creating the famous trophy cup for the Roland-Garros tennis
championship, the Cup of the Musketeers.
Mellerio was to have another famous neighbour at Number
84, after opening its boutique at 9 Rue de la Paix. At the
end of 1899, Alfred Cartier moved to Number 13 in the
same street. At that time, he was the leading supplier for the
royal and imperial courts. This jeweller rapidly multiplied
its watch-making and jewellery innovations. The year 1904
saw the appearance of the first wristwatch, the “Santos”, in
response to the aviator Santos-Dumont who used to complain
that he was unable to read the time on his pocket watch.
Fifteen years later, the watch named “Tank” became the
symbolic model of the label. Another avant-garde creation
that made an impact was the first pieces of jewellery in the
shape of a panther. Then in 1976, the firm joined the inner
circle of the famous jewellers established in the very heart of
the Place Vendôme, where it set up a boutique at No. 23.
Today, at the age of 164 years old, this venerable institution
is determined to retain its international position as a leading
jeweller and continues to combine heritage with innovation.
Innovation is also a key work for Poiray, the most recent
jeweller to become part of the extremely closed circle of
this historic square. In 1972, François Herail and Michel
Hermelin launched this jewellers as a tribute to Paul Poiret,
the famous couturier of the early 20 th century. It is still
nicknamed “the young girl of the Place Vendôme”, nearly
40 years after it opened its boutique at 1 Rue de la Paix.
The label has, with considerable flair, imposed its creativity
among its prestigious colleagues, and is also a forerunner of
new trends. It has successfully displayed its originality by
introducing semiprecious stones in jewellery, as well as an
entertaining dimension reflected in its emblematic watch
“Ma Première” with its interchangeable bracelet.
Place Vendôme? It seems to have been its destiny to become
home to the greatest jewellers of this world. Seen from above,
the round top of the Vendôme column gives the illusion of
a pearl set in an octagonal jewel casket. A good omen for a
jewel sparkling in the heart of Paris!

Au commencement, Lorenz Bäumer réalise un rêve
d’enfant.
59
S T Y L E
In the beginning, Lorenz Bäumer had a childhood dream:
the one where he saw his mother transform into a princess
bedazzled in jewels. In turn, he wanted to take possession of
the magic wand. “I always loved to create”.
From his diplomat German Father, Lorenz inherited the
curiosity and taste for traveling which continually fed his
inspiration: a fondness that he shares with the pioneering
spirit of Louis Vuitton. His mother, a French artist, gave
him the lure of beauty. Contemporary and decorative art
enthusiast and collector, Lorenz Bäumer has built an eclectic
style. His office at Place Vendome is a veritable curiosity
which mixes prints, photographs, contemporary art, and art
deco silverware.
Halfway between poetry, gardening, and architecture,
Lorenz chose jewellery because “it’s the creation where there
is the most emotion.” Even if the execution requires technical
rigor and discipline, the finished product must be playful
and dreamlike.
The codes? He masters them to better exceed them.
Tradition? He refers to it but constantly transgresses. His
creations? Uninhibited with snippets of humour and fantasy.
“Jewellery should not seem too serious. It should certainly not
be indifferent”.
The hallmark of his work shows: the explosion of coloured
stones. Monochrome or ordered in gradients, this atypical
practice and an iconoclast in jewelry has not forgotten his
passion for the great designers and fashion. At the head
of fine jewellery for Louis Vuitton for last three years,
Lorenz Bäumer has a dedicated admiration for Marc Jacobs.
If the two domains, ready-to-wear and fine jewellery, are
independent, the jeweller has several creations that echo the
work of the designer. Besides colour shock, Lorenz Bäumer
is highly aware of the fluidity and of the comfort of
the materials.
But it is the global spirit of Louis Vuitton which inspires the
jeweller to elaborate his collections. Integrating the brand’s
codes is a constraint that is seen as a game: “There are so many
interesting ways to interpret the flower in the monogram.”
Louis Vuitton had already invented the LV cut, a diamond
cut which uses the flower from the monogram, before the
arrival of Lorenz Bäumer. Its two variants, the Flower Cut,
with a rounded edge, and the Star Cut, with a pointed edge,
soon won the heart of the jeweller. “I fell in love. This cut of
diamond is exceptional and is only found at Louis Vuitton.
It is set to be an icon as its optical qualities are remarkable.”
His ambition? To make Louis Vuitton one of the largest
jewellers in the world and to give it the place that it deserves.
The goal of the Place Vendome boutique, which will open its
doors at the end of 2011, is to contribute to this growth. “We
have imagined a magical place”. The architect, Peter Marino,
in charge of this task, will offer a global showcase to publicize
this facet of the lesser known, but equally prestigious, division
of Louis Vuitton.

qu’il neigeait, la colonne était éclairée. On pouvait voir
projette vers l’avenir.
French luxury according to you?
More than an extraordinary creation, it is a total experience.
It is beyond a jewel that combines course, materials of the
highest quality, expertise and tradition; it also includes its
box, its environment. The Place Vendome boutique, in that
respect, has the mission to participate in this idea of French
luxury which represents Louis Vuitton.
What do you think of the Place Vendome?
It is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. I moved
in 10 years ago and I cannot get enough. Every morning,
it is the same wonder. I appreciate its history. It is a place
which has always been a centre of artistic life. The rue de la
Paix was formerly host to the greatest fashion houses: Grès,
Worth, Vionnet …
Talk to us about the Vendome column?
I have a Vendome column photo collection. I own nearly
150 images from 1850 to today.
Your best memory of the square?
Unquestionably the one where it was snowing an early
morning in winter and the column was illuminated.
You could see the shadow of Napoleon on the clouds.
It was magical.
During which era would you like to cross the square?
Today or tomorrow. As a creator, I project myself into
the future.
What does the Ritz Paris evoke for you?
Marvelous lunches on the bar’s patio during summer,
a cooking class that I took with my friends, and above
all, Proust. I remember a rendering of the Ritz Paris

Un second carré, baptisé « Puttin’ on the Ritz », s’inspire
The Ritz Paris has launched a new collection of scarves in silk
twill, designed and produced exclusively in the grand tradition
of master weavers.
Natural silk and pure, bright colours set the tone for the authentic
elegance of these scarves.
The new and unique designs, with their subtle hints of the past,
are the fruit of a fine tradition of savoir-faire. Inspired directly
by the mythical atmosphere of the hotel in Place Vendôme, they
reinterpret Parisian style and luxury and conjure up a whimsical
and sophisticated world of imagination.
One of the models illustrates the architecture of the stained glass
window illuminating the staircase of the hotel lobby.
The scarf repeats the themes of spiraling trees and flowers that
decorate the central area of the hotel, strongly influenced by the
Art Deco style. The design is produced in petit point, like an
ornamental jewel sculpted in arabesques.
Another scarf, called “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, echoes the very
famous song sung by Fred Astaire. Like its words celebrating the
joy of living in the 1930s, the scarf is animated by a melodious
lightness. Its design is composed of whirls and spirals, echoing gay
and delicate music scores.
Inspired by the luxurious frieze of the Chopin Suite, the Chopin
scarf, in a light and airy silk muslin, is embellished with fine
flowers and foliage that infuse a freshness to this delicate tissue.
The motifs follow a romantic and decidedly chic line, in the
spirit of a refined classicism.
The arabesques intermingle with friezes borrowed from the
Suite, bringing to life a gentle and harmonious decoration.
Or when silk scarves bearing the Ritz signature reflect French
elegance with sophistication and imagination.
