Como saiu da Romênia e começou sua carreira no vôlei
mundial?
Em 1990 tivemos o Campeonato Europeu e fui eleita a
melhor jogadora. Como não tinha mais a Cortina de Ferro,
já podia sair do país. Então fiquei mais um ano no Dínamo,
me ofereceram uma casa. Como melhor jogadora tinha
mais prestígio e mais concorrência. No ano seguinte veio
a proposta da Itália, França, Espanha, Grécia. Vários países
me queriam, mas eu queria a Itália. Sempre quis ir para
o melhor, e lá estavam as melhores jogadoras do mundo.
Queria comparar o meu nível perto delas e descobrir onde
era meu lugar. Depois joguei na França, Brasil e Romênia
novamente.
Em que ano veio ao Brasil?
Em 1997. Um ano antes, tinha sido a melhor pontuadora
do Campeonato Italiano. Tinha fechado um contrato em
1998 com um time italiano. Fechei e fui jogar pela seleção
romena, quando voltei descobri que tinham chamado
outras duas americanas, e eram duas estrangeiras só por
time. Nesse tempo uma amiga conhecia o diretor esportivo
do Minas e ele estava atrás de uma estrangeira. Então ela
me falou do Brasil.
O que passou na sua cabeça?
Tinha vindo em 1994 no Minas, mas achava muito longe.
Na Itália tinha morado com uma brasileira, que me
incentivou muito a vir para cá. Quando veio a proposta,
eu ganhava X aí pedi o dobro e falei que se me dessem,
iria. Não estava achando que daria certo. Nunca tinha
feito isso, sempre escolhi meus times pelo técnico e pela
levantadora. Dois dias depois me retornaram e como para
mim a palavra é muito importante, fui. Tive sorte no Minas
porque é um clube muito bom e me trataram muito bem.
Tinha a Leila, a Ilma, as melhores da seleção.
Como foi recebida? Qual as principais diferenças entre o
vôlei aqui e na Europa?
Elas me receberam muito bem. Tinha uma que falava italiano
e me comunicava com ela. Do técnico, não entendia
nada. Tinha aprendido só os palavrões. O estilo de jogo é
diferente, na Itália, por exemplo, a estrangeira só atacava
world volleyball?
In 1990, there was the European Championship and I was
voted MVP. As the iron curtain no longer existed, I could leave
the Country. So I stayed another year playing for Dinamo, they
offered me a house. As the best player, I had more prestige
and more playing time. During the following year, proposals
came from Italy, France, Spain and Greece. Several countries
wanted me, but I wanted Italy. I’ve always wanted to play
with the best, and they were the best players in the world. I
wanted to compare my level with theirs and find out where
my place was. Afterwards, I played in France, Brazil and, once
again in Romania.
In what year did you move to Brazil?
In 1997. A year earlier, I had been the best scorer in the
Italian League. In 1998, I ended my contract with an Italian
team. I left and went to play for the Romanian Team, when I
returned I found out that they had called on two Americans,
and each team could have only two foreign players. At that
time, a friend knew the Director of Sports for Minas and he
was looking for a foreign player. So she told me about Brazil.
What was going through your head at the time?
In 1994, I had visited Minas, but it was so far away. While in
Italy, I had been living with a Brazilian, who kept encouraging
me about playing here. When a proposal finally came, I was
making X and I asked for twice that and I said if they accepted
I would go and play for Minas. I wasn’t thinking it would be
accepted. I had never done anything like that before, I had
always chosen my teams by coach and by the setter. Two
days later, they came back accepting, and for me, my word
is very important, I went. I was lucky at Minas because it is
a very good club and they treated me very well. There was
Leila, Ilma, the best of the Brazilian National Team.
How were you received? What are the main differences
between volleyball here and in Europe?
I was received very well. There was someone who spoke
Italian and I communicated through her. I didn’t understand
anything the coach said. He had learned only swear words.
The style of play is different, in Italy, for example, the foreign
players just attacked and I had come here with this idea in
