Liebe Freunde,
ich sende Ihnen meine herzlichsten Grüße zum
3. Internationalen Anton-Bruckner-Chorwettbewerb
in Linz. Ich begrüße Sie in dieser für
INTERKULTUR so traditionsreichen Stadt, in der
im Jahre 2000 der größte und erfolgreichste
Chorwettbewerb der Welt, die „World Choir
Games“ (damals Chorolympiade) aus der Taufe
gehoben wurde.
Ich freue mich, dass sich zum 3. Anton-Bruckner-
Chorwettbewerb Chöre aus 14 Ländern in Linz
treffen, um mit ihrem Chorgesang einen der
größten Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts zu
ehren: Anton Bruckner.
7. World Choir Games vor, die vom 4. – 14. Juli
„Singing together brings nations together“
neue Impulse zu verleihen.
Zu diesem Highlight und zu den zahlreichen
weiteren künftigen Veranstaltungen von
INTERKULTUR darf ich Sie herzlich einladen. Ihnen
allen, liebe Chorsängerinnen und Chorsänger,
liebe Dirigenten und Begleiter wünsche ich
den größtmöglichen Erfolg beim Wettbewerb
und uns allen ein gutes Gelingen dieses 3. Internationalen
Anton Bruckner Chorwettbewerbs
& Festivals.
11
Dear friends,
I send all of you my best regards for the 3 rd
International Anton Bruckner Choir Competition
in Linz. I welcome you in this city which
comprises so much tradition for INTERKULTUR
because the biggest and most successful choir
competition in the world, the “World Choir
Games” (Choir Olympics then), was launched
right here in 2000.
I am glad that choirs from 14 countries will
meet at the 3 rd Anton Bruckner Choir Competition
in order to honor one of the most important
composers of the 19 th century: Anton
Bruckner. He is closely connected with Linz and
composed numerous of his outstanding works
in Linz or in the nearby monastery St. Florian.
The choirs will sleuth Bruckner by interpreting
his compositions in addition to their own music
in the Brucknerhaus, in the Neuer Dom or
in St. Florian.
Especially the choir’s encounter concerts in the
uniquely beautiful monastery complex will
hopefully remain in everybody’s memory as a
wonderful experience, no matter if the choirs
present their art in the minster or the magnificent
marble hall.
already for the third time. I would also like to
express my gratitude to Upper Austria, the city
of Linz, the Linzer Veranstaltungsgesellschaft
(LIVA) and also the Brucknerbund Upper Austria
and all the others that made this competition
a success with their financial support,
their ideas and last but not least with their
active help.
Presently INTERKULTUR is intensely preparing
the 7. World Choir Games, which will take
place for the first time on the American continent
from 4-14 July 2012. The musical metropolis
Cincinnati, host of this unique major
event of choral music, which is steadily attracting
more and more attention, is currently getting
ready to welcome thousands of singers
from all over the world and to breathe new
life into the motto “Singing together brings
nations together”.
I wish all dear singers, conductors and companions
utmost success for the competition. And
I wish all of us success for 3 rd International
Anton Bruckner Choir Competition & Festival.
Yours Günter Titsch
I would like to thank everybody who contributed
launching the Anton Bruckner Choir
Competition and making the event come true

Dr. Josef Pühringer
Landeshauptmann /
Governor of Upper Austria
Weltweite Anerkennung
Bereits zum 3. Mal findet heuer das Internationale
Anton-Bruckner-Chorwettbewerb &
Festival statt.
Zudem
bürgt auch das Kulturland Oberösterreich mit
seinen mehr als 1000 Chören und rund 28.000
Sängerinnen und Sängern für Qualität, die
weltweit Anerkennung erfahren hat.
Was ist das Faszinierende am Chorsingen? Einerseits
ist es das erfrischende Miteinander
mit Gleichgesinnten. Andererseits ist ein Chor
– und das ist einer seiner wichtigsten Wesensmerkmale
– eine Gemeinschaft, die über
das gemeinsame Singen weit hinausgeht. Jeder
einzelne Chor ist auch Ort der zwischenmenschlichen
Begegnungen und somit eine
Gemeinschaft im besten Sinn.
Chorsingen kulturelles Heimatbewusstsein,
schafft aber gleichzeitig auch die Möglichkeit
der internationalen Verständigung. Es fördert
die Beschäftigung mit der eigenen Vergangenheit
und die Bereitschaft sich mit fremden
Kulturen auseinander zu setzten und diese zu
akzeptieren.
Ich wünsche den Veranstaltern und allen Teilnehmerinnen
und Teilnehmern des Wettbewerbes
viel Erfolg sowie den Besuchern viel
Freude an diesem Festival.
Dr. Josef Pühringer
Landeshauptmann
Ein Chor hat auch eine hohe bildungspolitische
Aufgabe und leistet einen wesentlichen
Beitrag zur kulturellen Identität. So vermittelt

Worldwide acknowledgement
Already for the third time the International
Anton Bruckner Choir Competition & Festival
takes place today. The name has been chosen
well. Because it represents a clearly visible signal,
what this event is about – it is about a
high artistic standard. Moreover also the cultural
country Upper Austria guarantees with
its more than 1000 choirs and app. 28.000
singers for a quality which has been acknowledged
worldwide.
Why is choir singing so fascinating? On the
one hand there is the refreshing cooperation
with like-minded people. On the other hand
a choir is – and this is one of its main features
– a community which reaches far beyond
mutual singing. Each single choir is also
a place of interpersonal encounters und thus
community in its real sense.
A choir has a significant mission regarding
matters of education policy and it makes an
important contribution to cultural identity.
Thus choir singing conveys cultural patriotism
but also creates possibilities of international
understanding. It cultivates the occupation
with one’s own history and the readiness
to look into and to accept foreign cultures.
I wish the organiser as well as all participants
of the competition a lot of success and all visitors
a lot of joy during this festival.
Verlauf. Allen TeilnehmerInnen, die
beim Wettbewerb ihr Bestes geben, wünsche
ich alles Gute und einen schönen Aufenthalt
Festival of choral music
This year in June Linz will be venue of the International
Anton Bruckner Choir Competition
for the third time already. This festival,
which is all about this great composer of the
late romanticism every two years, attracts international
top class choirs from all over the
world to the regional capital. Perfect venues
will be again the Brucknerhaus – the prime
address regarding Linz’s concert life, the new
dome as well as the monastery St. Florian.
Enthusiasts of choral music can already start
looking forward to the performances. I wish
the organisers of INTERKULTUR Austria a successful
event and I also wish all participants
who give their best during the competition
good luck and a pleasant stay in Linz.
Präsident des Brucknerbundes für
President of the Bruckner Association
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren!
Als Präsident des Brucknerbundes gratuliere
ich den Veranstaltern, die nunmehr schon
zum 3. Mal den Internationalen Anton Bruckner
Chorwettbewerbes hier in Linz ausrichten.
reichhaltigen Schatz Ihres Repertoires.
Dear Sir or Madam!
As the President of the Bruckner Association
(Brucknerbund) I congratulate the organisers
who realised the International Anton Bruckner
Choir Competition here in Linz already for
the third time.
I welcome all participants of the Anton
Bruckner Choir Competition who travelled
from near and far to Linz in order to face this
competition. I wish them all the best and I
am looking forward to many interesting auditions
arising from your comprehensive repertoire.
But these days shall also be days of amicable
encounters with singers from all over the
world. As the representative of the Brucknerbund
I wish that many of you will retrace Anton
Bruckners steps in Upper Austria so that
you have the chance to sense Bruckner: At
his birthplace in Ansfelden, at the landscape
with its hilly and well-wooded mill quarter
which inspired and formed him, in churches
in which he worked; to experience organs on
which he played and which had been rebuild
according to his ideas and under his direction
and first of all to sense the music which came
to live here in Upper Austria.
My special thanks goes to the organisers,
supporters, sponsors and jurors: This festival
of encounters and music only came true due
to their huge dedication.
I wish all participants a lot of success and
each of you that you return home being enriched:
Enriched by the music, by the encounters
and by the inspiration of the "Genius loci"
Musik – die gemeinsame Sprache der Welt
Der amerikanische Dichter Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow prägte vor rund 150 Jahren
den Spruch „Musik ist die gemeinsame
Sprache der Welt“. In der Tat ist Musik eine
Weltsprache, die von allen Menschen dieser
Welt verstanden wird. Stimmungen, Emotionen
und Gefühle finden darin einen besonderen
Ausdruck. Auch berühmte Dichter
waren sich dieser Tatsache bewusst. So bezeichnete
etwa Heinrich von Kleist die „Musik
als Wurzel aller übrigen Künste“. Friedrich
von Schiller dichtete über die Wirkung
der Musik: „Es schwinden jedes Kummers
Falten, so lang des Liedes Zauber walten“.
Aus Anlass des 3. Internationalen Anton-
Bruckner-Chorwettbewerb erfüllen Chöre
aus Asien, Europa und Südamerika die Kulturhauptstadt
Linz sowie das Stift St. Florian
mit attraktiven Klängen. Im Kulturleben der
Stadt Linz nimmt die Musik ohnehin eine
besonders wichtige Rolle ein. Viele Kulturinitiativen,
Vereine und öffentliche Einrichtungen
pflegen dieses bedeutende Kulturgut.
Durch Musikhauptschulen, das Landesmusikschulwerk
und die städtische Musikschule,
mit 120 Lehrern und über 4000 Schülern
die größte Österreichs, kommen Kinder und
Jugendliche schon früh mit dieser qualitätsvoll
in Kontakt. Besonders wichtig ist dabei
neben einer fundierten Ausbildung das Musizieren
in der Gemeinschaft und die damit
verbundene Vermittlung sozialer Kompetenzen.
Für die dritte Ausgabe des Anton Bruckner
Chorwettbewerbs wünsche ich den Organisatoren
eine gelungene Veranstaltung, viele
Besucher und den Musikern viel Erfolg und
Freude beim Wettstreit.
Ihr Dr. Erich Watzl
Vizebürgermeister und
Kulturreferent der Stadt Linz

Music – the common language of the world
150 years ago the American poet Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow coined the phrase ”Music is
the common language of the world“. Indeed
music is a universal language which can be
un-derstood by every human being in this
world. Moods, emotions and feelings can be
ex-pressed by music in a very special way. Even
famous poets were aware of this fact. Thus
Heinrich von Kleist e.g. described music as ”the
root of all other arts“. Friedrich von Schiller
versed about the impact of music: ”All wrinkles
of grief diminish as long as the charm of
mu-sic rules“.
On the occasion of the 3 rd International Anton
Bruckner Choir Competition choirs from
Asia, Europe and South America will enliven
the capital of culture Linz as well as the monastery
St. Florian with enchanting sounds.
Music plays an important role in the cultural
life of Linz anyway. Numerous cultural initiatives,
societies and public institutions cultivate
this distin-guished object of cultural value.
Children and youths get in contact with music
early and on a top level via secondary schools
for music, the federal institution for music and
the municipal school for music, which is the
biggest in Austria with its 120 teachers and
4000 pupils. Apart from a well-grounded education
it is especially important that the pupils
make music together and thus gain social
skills.
I wish the organisers of the Anton Bruckner
Choir Competition a successful third edition of
this event, many visitors and all musicians a
lot of success and joy during the competition.
Yours Dr. Erich Watzl
den World Choir Games fortschrieb.

World Choir Games goldene, silberne und bronzene Medaillen.
Indonesien, Israel, Italien, Malaysia, Malta, Osterreich, Republik Korea, Schweden, Tschechische

den Volkern beizutragen;
• Kinder- und Jugendchore bevorzugt aus finanzschwachen Ländern;
nachweisen können;
• Nachwuchschorleiter, junge Musiker und Sanger (Vergabe von Stipendien);
• zweckgebundene Forderprogramme.
KulturPreis Europa
treffen.
… Connecting Bridges
The First International Choir Competition of Budapest, which was launched in 1988, was the start of
one of the largest and most successful series of cultural events in Europe. The name of these novel choir
competitions and festivals, INTERKULTUR, has meanwhile become known throughout the world for its
high artistic and organisational standards and has become a concept for the choir-orientated public,
with enthusiastic followers all over the world. These events are organized by the non-profit organisation
INTERKULTUR Foundation. The Foundation’s biggest success so far, was to bring the antique Olympic
idea to the choral world. The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz (Austria) were the start of a Choir Olympic
movement, which continued a success story 2002 in Busan (Korea), 2004 in Bremen (Germany), 2006

23
in Xiamen (China), 2008 in Graz (Austria) and 2010 in Shaoxing (China) with the World Choir Games.
Another milestone in the history of INTERKULTUR was to establish a world championship for choirs.
The first World Choir Championships were called into being in 2009 and took place in the Province of
Gyeongnam (Republic of Korea). The next edition will be held in July 2011 in Graz (Austria).
The Idea
Meanwhile INTERKULTUR has become the symbol for a unique artistic idea, which consists of a new
interpretation concerning the execution of choir festivals: In comparison to the meritorious traditional
choir competitions, where only those choirs which belong to the international elite compete, the IN-
TERKULTUR competitions are open for the first time to all choirs. Choirs from all over the world that are
interested in gaining international festival and competition experience, can compare themselves with
other choirs according to their level of artistic achievement.
The Pedagogical Concept
The INTERKULTUR events are not just competitions and international choir festivals, they gain their
competence and lasting effect on its participants more and more by pedagogical offers. In consultation
rounds, for example, the choirs have the chance to work together with the international jury and to
get advice on their current level of achievement, competent pedagogical and artistic information and
suggestions as to how to interpret the chosen piece. In connection with that conventions, seminars for
conductors, composer portraits and lectures are being offered at the INTERKULTUR events. Friendship
and encounter concerts reinforce this big emotional effect of the international choir-meetings organized
by INTERKULTUR Foundation.
The Quality Seal
For 22 years, MUSICA MUNDI® is the exclusive quality seal for all INTERKULTUR events worldwide. Since
the first competition that INTERKULTUR organised 1988 in Budapest the rating system, on which all
events are based upon, has been improved continuously. All INTERKULTUR events have this quality seal
in common. It guarantees comparability among all events and has set standards in the world of choir
music.
The Competitions
There are various categories for all choir types and choir levels in different degrees of difficulty, with and
without compulsory pieces. They offer a unique atmosphere, good competitive conditions, intensive
artistic contacts, various consultation programs and workshops, as well as practice opportunities with
international performers. More than 200 experts and leading choirmasters from all over the world
guarantee a high level of qualified competence in all INTERKULTUR events.

24
Evaluation System
The jury awards golden, silver and bronze diplomas on 10 levels at INTERKULTUR competitions and
gold, silver and bronze medals at the World Choir Games and World Choir Championships, according
to a special MUSICA MUNDI evaluation system. This shows each choir what standard of performance
the ensemble has achieved at that moment.
Locations of Festivals and Competitions
INTERKULTUR events have been taken place in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia,
Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Malta, People’s Republic of China, Republic of Korea, Sweden and USA.
In 2011 for the first time a choral event was held in Vietnam.
The Participants
In total, 5.500 choirs with 275.000 active singers from 100 countries have taken part in the INTER-
KULTUR competitions up to date. It is interesting to note that over half of the participants have been
children and youth of under 25 years of age.
Means of Support
In accordance with its statutes, INTERKULTUR Foundation supports the following activities:
· international music festivals and choir competitions whose goal it is to bring together choirs from
different regions of the world to encourage international collaboration through mutual respect, as
well as to contribute to cultural exchange and understanding among nations
· children‘s and youth choirs, preferably from financially challenged countries
· amateur choirs, either local or international, that show intensive and sustained youth development
· young, talented choirmasters, young musicians and singers (scholarship awards)
· specific sponsorship programmes
European Culture Award
INTERKULTUR Foundation was awarded the 2006 European Culture Award, called into being by Hans
Dietrich Genscher and presented by KulturForum Europa, for its activities on behalf of understanding
between peoples and furtherance of common European thinking in the field of culture.
Honorary citizenship
INTERKULTUR President Günter Titsch is appointed as honorary citizen of Xiamen in China. In July 2006,
20,000 participants with 400 choirs celebrated the World Choir Games in Xiamen and made the South
Chinese harbour city resound with their music. As proclaimed officially the city honours with this
appointment Günter Titsch’s credits with respect to his promotion of the city’s worldwide reputation.

Anton Bruckner – Komponist der Romantik /
Anton Bruckner – Composer of Romanticism
Anton Bruckner – *4. 9.1824 Ansfelden (Oberösterreich) – † 11. 10. 1896 Wien
Anton Bruckner ist einer der herausragenden
österreichischen Komponisten der Romantik.
Tief in der katholischen Tradition verwurzelt,
zählt er zu den wichtigsten und innovativsten
Tonschöpfern der 2. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts
und ist neben Brahms und Wagner derjenige
Komponist, dessen Schaffen wohl am
stärksten richtungweisend für die Entwicklung
der europäischen Musik wurde. Seine Werke
übten bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein einen
großen Einfluss auf die nachfolgenden Musikergenerationen
aus.
Anton Bruckner stammt aus einer oberösterreichischen
Lehrerfamilie. Nach dem Tod des
Vaters wurde er 1837 Sängerknabe im Stift St.
Florian in Oberösterreich.
Domorganisten in Linz berufen. Hier begründet
sich auch sein Ruf als ausgezeichneter Organist
und Improvisator. In die Linzer Zeit fallen
die ersten großen vokalen Meisterwerke Bruckners,
unter anderem seine Messen in d-Moll,
e-Moll und f-Moll. Er betreibt weitere Studien
bei Simon Sechter in Wien, dessen Nachfolge
er als Professor für Generalbass, Kontrapunkt
und Orgel am Konservatorium Wien 1868 antritt.
Sein bedeutendes sinfonisches Schaffen
fällt vorwiegend in die Zeit nach 1870. Seine
Sinfonien unterzog er ständigen Revisionen,
Umarbeitungen, Verfeinerungen, ja sogar Neufassungen.
Bruckner begeisterte sich für die Musik Richard
Wagners, und geriet so in den Parteienstreit
zwischen den Traditionalisten (um den Musikkritiker
Hanslick) und den sogenannten
„Neudeutschen“ (Wagner). Dieser Streit brachte
ihm jahrelange Anfeindungen ein und bescherte
ihm große Enttäuschungen.
Obwohl das sinfonische Schaffen Bruckners die
vokalen Kompositionen überwiegt, gelangen
ihm auch hier Meisterwerke von großer Schönheit
und Vollendung. Sie sind musikalisch von
der Klassik beeinflusst, gehen aber vielmehr
zurück zu den Traditionslinien Palestrinas und
der venezianischen Meister des 16. Und 17.
Jahrhunderts.

27
Anton Bruckner – *4 September 1824 in Ansfelden (Upper Austria) – † 11 October 1896 in Vienna
Anton Bruckner is one of the outstanding Austrian
composers of the Romantic Period. Deeply
rooted in the Catholic tradition, he counts among
the most important and innovative composers
of the second half of the 19 th century and, after
Brahms and Wagner, is probably the composer
whose work had a guiding function in the development
of European music. His works exercised a
great influence on following generations of musicians
well into the 20 th century.
Anton Bruckner hailed from an Upper Austrian
family of teachers. After the death of his father
in 1837, he became a choirboy at the monastery
of St. Florian in Upper Austria. He first embarked
upon a teaching career in accordance with the family
tradition. Passing his examination in 1845,
he was active as teacher and organist in St. Florian.
His decision to dedicate himself wholly to the
music profession was made in 1855. During this
year he was appointed cathedral organist in Linz,
where his reputation as an outstanding organist
and improviser was first formed. Bruckner’s first
vocal masterworks were composed during this
period in Linz, including the Masses in D minor, E
minor and F minor. He undertook further studies
with Simon Sechter in Vienna, whom he succeeded
in 1868 as professor of figured bass, counterpoint
and organ at the Vienna Conservatory. His
important symphonic production began for the
most part after 1870. The symphonies underwent
constant revisions, re-writings, refinements
and even new versions.
Bruckner was enthusiastic about the music of
Richard Wagner and was thus drawn into the
war between the traditionalist faction (around
the music critic Hanslick) and the so-called “New
Germans” (centred around Wagner). This quarrel
brought him animosity for years, causing him
great disappointments. Although Bruckner’s symphonic
production dominates his vocal composi-
tions, he also succeeded in the latter area in creating
masterworks of great beauty and perfection.
They are musically influenced by the classics but,
more importantly, go back to the traditions of
Palestrina and the Venetian masters of the 16th
and 17 th centuries. Today, his famous a-cappella
motets belong to the standard repertoire of
many choirs.
Anton Bruckner died on 11 October 1896 at the
age of 72. His remains were brought to Saint Florian
and buried in the monastery church under
the organ.

Eröffnungskonzert / Opening Concert
Anton Bruckner (1824 – 1896)
langwierigen Entstehungsprozesses.
Erstmalig beschäftigte sich Bruckner 1881
mit der Komposition, doch erst im März 1884
konnte er die Partitur abschließen und wiederum
etwa ein Jahr später fand die Uraufführung
im Kleinen Musikvereinssaal in Wien statt, wobei
das Orchester noch durch zwei Klaviere ersetzt
wurde. Im Januar 1886 wurde das Werk in
der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde schließlich
mit voller Besetzung dem Publikum vorgestellt.
Anton Bruckner (1824 – 1896)
TE deUM Hymn in honour of God
The idea on this big composition occupied Anton
Bruckner for a long time. The decisive impulse on
the completion of the Te Deum was possibly the
news about the death of Richard Wagner, whom
he had admired and esteemed. The composer described
his Te Deum as his “best work” and “pride
of his life”. At the same time it is characteristic
that he dedicated what is probably his most
choral work to God with the annotation “out of
gratitude, because my persecutors have still not
succeeded in killing me”. This dedication does not
merely speak for the self-confidence of an artist
who did not achieve fame until late in life and
who had to endure harsh criticism over a long period
of time; it is also just as much likely to be an
expression of his relief after having spent a surprisingly
long time writing work considering its actual
scale. Bruckner first set about composing his
Te Deum in 1881 but it was not until March 1884
that he was finally able to complete the score. It
then took just under a year for the work to receive
its première in the Kleiner Musikvereinssaal
(small auditorium of the music society) in Vienna,
which saw, however, the orchestra being replace
by two pianos. A full-scale public performance of
the work was finally held in the Society of Music
Lovers in January 1886.
