of country in high esteem: Marriyum
ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum
Aurangeb has said that PML-N holds constitutional institutions of the country in
high esteem. Talking to a news channel on Sunday, she said that the appearance
of the son of an elected Prime Minister before the Joint Investigation Team has
substantiated PML-N stance in this regard.
She said that Hussain Nawaz could have avoided the JIT notice but he
appeared before it, although he has expressed reservations over two member of
the JIT in his petition filed in the apex court.
Earlier, talking to media on his arrival at federal judicial academy, Hussain
Nawaz said that he will present his stance before the JIT along with his counsel.
He said he received the notice yesterday.
ISLAMABAD: Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif’s
son Hussain Nawaz on
Sunday appeared before the
Joint Investigation Team
(JIT), probing offshore
properties of ruling Sharif
family in line with Supreme
Court’s Panamagate verdict.
Nawaz reached the
National Judicial Academy
to record his statement
before the investigation
body. Hussain Nawaz was
questioned for nearly two
hours and was given a questionnaire.
He has been asked
to reappear on May 30.
Briefly talking to media
persons outside the judicial
academy, Hussain Nawaz
said that he had received a
notice from JIT yesterday
(Saturday) which asked him
to appear within 24 hours.
“I will present my viewpoint
along with my counsel
Advocate Fazal Ghani,” he
said while denying that he
was given any questionnaire
by the JIT.
Member of JIT Umer
Cheema said that he could
not share details pertaining
to investigation with the
media. However, he asserted
that an undaunted investigation
was underway until
reservations raised by the
ruling family of late.
“Unfortunately, we have
a tradition of hurling allegations
on regulatory authorities,
intending to malign
their credibility to disrupt
progress”, he said while
implying the recent reservations
as an attempt to delay
the investigation.
Fragile transmission network collapsed power
supply across Sindh: CM complains FM
KARACHI: Sindh
Ali Shah said Sunday that
the apprehensions he had
expressed with federal minister
for water & power that
fragile and unreliable transmission
network may collapse
the power supply during
Ramzan, and people of
Sindh would suffer
immensely has sadly come
true.
This he said in a letter he
has written to Federal
Karachi division plunged
into darkness, as a result of
500 KV Hubco-Jamshoro
around 2:15 am."
Shah said that the sudden
tripping of the fragile high
transmission lines created
cascading effect not only in
HESCO-SEPCO distribution
system but also affected
K-Electric which was
forced to enter into an island
mode for system safety by
shutting down power supply
to large areas of Karachi.
"The power has not yet been
fully restored," he said.
SEOUL: North Korean
leader Kim Jong-Un has
overseen a test of a new antiaircraft
weapon system, state
media said on Sunday, amid
mounting tensions in the
region following a series of
missile tests by Pyongyang.
Over the past few
months, the young leader has
overseen several military
drills, including the test-firing
of a medium-range ballistic
missile last Sunday, as
Washington seeks to ramp
up pressure on Pyongyang to
curb its nuclear ambitions.
The North’s official
Korean Central News
Agency said Kim “watched
the test of a new-type antiaircraft
guided weapon system”,
which was aimed at
“detecting and striking different
targets flying from any
direction”.
KCNA did not give the
exact date and location of the
drill. Pyongyang first tested
the new weapon system in
April last year when some
defects had been discovered,
but Kim said the latest test
verified that all glitches had
been “perfectly overcome”,
KCNA said.
the efficiency of the
weapon system “to detect
and track targets has remarkably
improved and its hitting
accuracy has also increased”
compared to last year, the
young leader was quoted as
saying.
criminal was killed in an
operation conducted by the
counter terrorism department
(CTD) in SITE area of
the city Sunday night.
According to CTD SSP
Omar Shahid, they conducted
an operation near
Nowras Chowing in SITE
area. During the raid, Suhail
alias DC opened fire at the
personnel. However, he was
injured when the police
retaliated. He was arrested
in an injured condition and
his identity was ascertained.
son of his parents, was
Expressing his satisfaction,
in all over the country like
forests so as to completely
spoil the enemy’s wild
dream to command the air,
boasting of air supremacy
and weapon almighty.”
Tensions are high in the
region over the nucleararmed
North’s weapons
ambitions and its regular
test-firing of ballistic missiles.
The North has carried
out two atomic tests and
dozens of rocket firings since
the beginning of last year in
its quest to develop a missile
capable of delivering a
nuclear warhead to the continental
United States.
Thousands join Faizan’s funeral in Tral
A hand grenade and pistol
was also found in his
possession. On the other
hand Suhail was taken to
the hospital where he succumbed
to his injuries.
The SSP said Suhail was
a worker of Muttahida
Qaumi Movement until
around 2008.
He had joined the
Wasiullah Lakho group
after he entered the gang
war in 2010, the SSP maintained,
adding Suhail was
involved in target killing
and many such criminal
activities.
The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)
Chairman MuhammadYasin Malik while paying rich tributes
to Sabzar Ahmad and his associate, said, “Struggle of
this great soul (Sabzar) against illegal control and oppression
will always be remembered and cherished by
Kashmiris.” Paying rich tributes to the martyrs, the Jammu
and Kashmir National Front (JKNF) Chairman, Nayeem
Shahbaz condemns Indian state
terrorism in Occupied Kashmir
ISLAMABAD: Punjab
Chief Minister Muhammad
Shahbaz Sharif has strongly
condemned the Indian
state terrorism in Occupied
Kashmir.
In a statement, he
expressed profound grief
and sorrow over the martyrdom
of Kashmiri youths
in occupied Kashmir. He
said that Indian army has
unleashed an era of cruelty
and oppression against
Kashmiri people.
He said Indian aggression
cannot create hurdles
Kashmiri people. He urged
the world community to
on India to immediately
stop bloodshed in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, in occupied
KARACHI: Chairman
Pakistan Peoples Party
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Kashmiris' carnage by
Indian armed forces.
The spokesperson added
that electricity has been
provided to restart the
affected generators.
The Managing Director
In a press statement
issued here, he said that barbarism
has been let loose on
Kashmiri people with the
beginning of holy month of
Ramadan. “Kashmiris are
targeted by state terrorism
for seeking their inalienable
right to self-determination,”
he pointed out.
of NTDC, Dr Fiaz Ahmad
Chaudhry said the matter
was being looked into, and
the investigation into the
reason for the breakdown
would be complete in next
stated that the process to
Fair price stalls required
to control profiteering
KARACHI: Like previous
year, this Ramzan also
begin with sharp price hike,
with rates of eatables, fruits
and vegetables touching the
sky. However, the city
needs a lot of fair price
shops and stalls by the government
and philanthropists
to ensure that poor and low
income people can also purchase
Seheri and Iftari for
their families.
Poor planning at the
government level, cruel
profiteering mentality of
traders and shopkeepers and
low role of philanthropists
and religious organizations
to set up fair price shops
and stalls in the city are
behind the neck-breaking
price hike in the holy month
of Ramazan.
There is a need to introduce
the culture of selling
daily use commodities,
especially eatables, at low
profit margin to greet the
holy month of Ramzan. If
the citizens, social organizations
and philanthropists
arrange fair price shops and
stalls at community level,
the blessings of Ramzan
could also be extended to
the poor and low income
families. It is suggested that
besides arranging Iftar stalls
on roads and streets, the
generous Karachiites and
sensible trade community
should also arrange community
level fair price stalls
to facilitate people.
KARACHI: Pakistan is
7th most adversely affected
country in the world by climate
change. Despite having
high vulnerability of
future climatic changes.
According to Pakistan's
new Economic Survey
2016-17 , the government
has developed national policy
to combat climate change
and an action plan is being
developed to effectively
implement its concerns
through sustainable planning.
To materialize the
efforts regarding protection
of climate change, the government
has recently passed
“Pakistan Climate Change
Act 2017”. The legislation
has in turn created climate
Change Fund, Climate
Change Council and
Climate Change Authority
to implement the Climate
Change Act.
Keeping in view the
challenges and distortions
caused by global climate
change, the worldwide
efforts are underway to
mitigate the devastating
effects. Pakistan, like
many other countries, is
fully cognizant of this
issue and has already
undertaken various programs
and projects.
and creating climate
resilience. These interventions
are aimed at restoring
ecosystem services including
carbon sequestration,
and will help to support
improved and new livelihood
opportunities. In this
context local community
participation in the planning,
implementation and
monitoring of all such
activities would play a crucial
role. Development of
This he said as a chief guest
while inaugurating Shakir
institute of Nursing and
Allied Health Sciences at
Gharo and launching ceremony
of Sadar Muhammad
Shakir's book " Fikre
Shakir" . He said that it was
a fact that unemployment
was the biggest issue of the
country and PPP government
was trying its best to
address the issue and as
many 40 thousands new
jobs would be provided to
the youth in the new budget.
He stressed upon the private
sector to come forward
and to play its effective role
to provide jobs to the unemployed
youth. The minister
Mukesh Kumar Chawla
added " Dr. Afzal of Shakir
Medical Centre Gharo is
doing well to serve the
needy people and it is the
need of the hour that such
more philanthropists should
come forward".
Electric (KE) claimed that
it was in the process of
restoring power supply to
major water pumping stations
including Dhabeji and
Pipri stations.
The impact on
Hyderabad Electric Supply
Company (HESCO) was
significantly higher in comparison,
the NTDC
spokesperson noted,
explaining that the national
grid usually supplies 550
MW of power to Karachi.
"Power is expected to
resume from Jamshoro and
Hubco power plants soon,"
the spokesperson said.
Almost 50-60 percent of
the metropolis faces a lack
of electricity at present,
Dada said, reiterating the
same reason behind the
power outage as that of the
NTDC spokesperson.
“A 500-KV Jamshoro
transmission line caused
the power outage,” Dada
explained, adding that
efforts are underway to normalize
the impacted areas.
Most countries still not
prepared to tackle Ebola
and Zika diseases
KARACHI: Despite
progress made since the
Zika and Ebola crises, a
report released today by the
International Working
Group on Financing
Preparedness (IWG), established
by the World Bank,
shows that most countries
are not adequately prepared
for a pandemic, and the
world is still doing too little
to finance recommended
actions to strengthen pandemic
preparedness.
The report, entitled From
Panic and Neglect to
Investing in Health Security:
Financing Pandemic
Preparedness at a National
Level, lays out 12 recommendations
to ensure the
adequate financing of the
capabilities and infrastructure
required to prevent,
identify, contain, and
respond to infectious disease
outbreaks.
Many countries chronically
underinvest in critical
public health functions like
disease surveillance, diagnostic
laboratories, and
emergency operations centers,
which enable the early
identification and containment
of outbreaks. So far, 37
countries have completed
the rigorous peer-reviewed
assessments, called the Joint
External Evaluation (JEE),
of their preparedness capacities
to identify their gaps
and needs. But that leaves
162 countries that have not.
Moreover, only two of the
countries that have completed
this assessment have used
the results to devise costed
plans. The report urges
national governments to prioritize
financing preparedness
in their domestic budgets,
as should international
donors.
Empowering widows with
skills and livelihoods urged
KARACHI: Mirpurkhas
is said to be the rich district
in terms of agriculture and
producing variety of fruits.
Besides this, there is career
potential among illiterate
and marginalized women,
specially widows, who produce
variety of beautiful
items by stitching colourful
threads and have art of texturing
pieces of clothes for
local markets. But they need
support from philanthropists,
traders organisations
and government institutions
so they may contribute to
end poverty through their
skills. Quite recently,
empowering widows with
skills and livelihood programme
have opened doors
of 200 beneficiaries of
Mirpurkhas city to live with
prosperity and ease their
families.
Obviously, these widows
belong to low-income families
and were dependent on
now the change has come to
them, when they learned
skills and started their own
work and live with dignity.
Saima, one of these beneficiary
widows, sharing her
experiences, she got during
training course, said "I
never imagined to move out
of home and learn something
like this. It was surprise
move that a group of
young women activists
brought message and
offered to learn at a center,
where some skillful experts
are available to teach
women free of cost."
"Among others, I joined
the center, learned little for
three months and now earning
my own independently.
This initiative inspires
young girls of neighbourhood
to come, spare two
hours and learn," she said.
She accredits Arts
Foundation for this, which
inspires women to learn
skills, earn better living and
ease families. The organisation
established center under
'Augmenting widows access
to decent work through
vocational skill project' supported
by USAID under the
Small Grants Program
(SGP), eight-months ago.
Another woman Farzana
said it was inspiring
moment for her to come out
and joined this training center
and learned enough. "It
has not only made me able
to earn with dignity but save
my life. Because, after the
death of my husband I had
nothing to do. I was dependent
on others within family,"
she added.
She appreciated teachers
and friends, who taught the
fellow widows during the
period and contributed to
put many women on right
track to have economic
source, livelihoods.
ISLAMABAD: Youme-Takbeer
is being
observed today (Sunday) to
commemorate the historic
nuclear tests Pakistan conducted
on this day in 1998.
Pakistan became seventh
nuclear world power
with demonstration of
nuclear capabilities and
the first in the Muslim
world. The nuclear tests
made Pakistan's defense
invincible.
Special prayers have
been offered for the
progress and prosperity of
the country, supremacy of
the constitution, prosperity
of the nation and eradication
of terrorism.
Different organizations
are arranging special programmes
and functions to
highlight importance of
the day. Meanwhile,
Political Leaders of
Pakistan Muslim League-
N have lauded Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif for
making Pakistan invincible
by equipping it with
nuclear capability.
Dr Abdul Qadeer
Khan presented huge
salute on unforgettable
services:
Nation of Pakistan presented
huge thanks and
salute to the Dr Abdul
Qadeer Khan on his unforgettable
services in
becoming Pakistan ‘7th
Atomic Country’ and
‘First Islamic Country’ on
world map.
Pakistan achieved
“credible nuclear deterrence”
on December 10,
1984, and perfected delivery
system in the early
90s, Dr Abdul Qadeer
Khan tells.
In his first piece written
exclusively for a
Western publication, Dr
Khan says that the West
should not be afraid of the
country’s nuclear programme.
He also boasts of
accomplishing a remarkable
feat by making
Rectangular Baffle: COM-
SOL Multi Physics Study”.
He said, the objective of
this research is to develop
the numerical model for
the prediction of flow
through channel with rectangular
baffle.
Ms. Nadia Asad Memon
delivered her M.S Seminar.
She said, the objective of
this research is to develop a
mathematical model for the
flow of fluid through converging
and diverging
channel. She said, the
research study is focused
Pakistan, “a country
which couldn’t produce
bicycle chains”, a nuclear
capable country and a
missile power.
According to him,
Pakistan’s nuclear
weapons had prevented
war with India, which he
accused of pursuing a
“massive programme”
solely for the purpose of
serving its ambitions of
attaining a superpower
status.
“Don’t overlook the
fact that no nuclear-capable
country has been subjected
to aggression or
occupied, or had its borders
redrawn. Had Iraq
and Libya been nuclear
powers, they wouldn’t
have been destroyed in
the way we have seen
recently. If we had
nuclear capability before
1971, we wouldn’t have
lost half our country after
a disgraceful defeat,”
Khan said.
'Father of nuclear bomb’
faced 5 years house arrest
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani nuclear scientistAbdul Qadeer
Khan waves after his release from house arrest. – File Photo
High court ordered released of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan
and said he was not involved in selling nuclear secrets to
Iran, North Korea and Libya.
Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani scientist accused of
selling nuclear secrets, was today freed from five years of
house arrest by a court and immediately declared that he can
now "lead a normal life". Khan, lionised as the "father" of
Pakistan's atomic bomb, confessed in 2004 to selling nuclear
secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya. He was immediately
pardoned but detained in his home.
In an interview with the Guardian after this morning's
court ruling, the metallurgist said he had no plans to travel
abroad or engage in domestic politics. Looking relaxed and
well, the 72-year-old strolled in the front garden of his plush
villa in Islamabad, playing with a pet dog and receiving wellwishers.
"It's a nice feeling, the worry is gone. I can lead a
normal life now, as a normal citizen. It's a fine feeling," he
later said by telephone.
Khan was detained in early 2004 after making a televised
confession to nuclear proliferation, following intense international
pressure on Pakistan. His nuclear trading network
had been discovered by western intelligence agents.
Anational hero in Pakistan for spearheading the country's
nuclear weapons programme, Khan subsequently retracted
his confession.
He said that, aside from having to maintain guards
around him, he had been freed with the "blessing" of the
government, which had been "very helpful".
Khan has been fighting a long-running court case against
his detention, saying he had not been convicted of any crime.
Under the previous regime, led by the then army chief,
Pervez Musharraf, he had little chance of successfully challenging
his arrest, but the civilian government has been flagging
its wish to see him freed.
Khan's lawyer said the high court had declared him a free
citizen. "The court has said as he was not involved in nuclear
proliferation or criminal activity, there is no case against him,
therefore he is a free citizen," Ali Zafar said.
Mr. Irshad Ali Malik
delivered his M. Phil
Seminar on “Nuumerical
said, Newtonian fluid flow
phenomena is examined
through forward step channel
with fixed single and
double baffles to measure
velocity and pressure contours.
Prof. Dr. Mumtaz
Hussain Mahar said, all
researchers have presented
their research in befitting
manner. The research will
benefit the society. He said,
we are providing congenial
atmosphere of research to
our scholars.
occasion and shared his
views about the research
conducted by the scholars.
A large number of
scholars and students
attended the seminars.
activities in the education
institutions running under
research that make their
efforts more meaningful.
While underlying the
need of conducting societyrelated
research, Dr. Shahid
Siddiqui further said that
merely economic development
would not be enough
for bringing real change in
the life of the people. Socio
aspect, in term of values,
attitude and thinking is also
important for achieving the
desired results, he added.
The research scholars
needed to focus on society’s
related issues, he said
adding the Educational
institutions and teaching
community should also
play their role in transformation
of society, by passing
on good human values
and practices to the new
generation. He hoped the
researchers will more work
devotedly for refining
data’s analysis process.
Should electronics or laptops replace
printed text books in education!?
Should electronics or laptops replace printed text
books in education!? It’s a question that can revolutionize
the way this world can learn and educate
for lightning progress and prosperity worldwide,
if adopted.
Many countries are already on slow to fast track for
replacing printed text books with electronic education
such as laptops or mobiles. With enough education
budget and human resources, those countries could
afford it.
The use of personal technology devices in the classroom
is prevalent at several colleges and universities.
Rather than embracing this trend, some faculty, departments
and even entire institutions have started putting
limitations on students’ use of personal technology in
class.
It started with teachers asking students to put away
their mobile phones. Now instructors are also asking
students to keep their laptops closed for the duration of
class. This prevents multitasking, keep them off of
social media sites but reasonably limits distractions to
others.
While it is inevitable that students will be distracted
at times, putting constraints on the use of personal
technology devices will not solve this problem.
Restricting use of devices in the classroom is moving
away from the trend of improving education by integrating
technology into classes and an entire education
system.
Reasons may be almost countless on why educational
institutions should continue to introduce and
practice technology instead of stepping back. Students
are technology natives. Using technology is second
nature to students. They have grown up with it and
incorporate it into almost every aspect of their lives.
Notebooks, tablets and cell phones are all technology
that students are accustomed to and can use as ancillary
learning aids. They should not lose access to
potential learning tools that have known benefits in a
classroom. Students use e-books. Many students are
purchasing digital editions of textbooks instead of traditional
printed copies for a variety of reasons, including
cost efficiency, ease of accessibility, and environmental
friendliness. E-books are typically accessed
through a student’s personal device, such as a notebook,
tablet or cell phone. Students should have access
to them to look up information during class. Students
want streamlined organization. Personal technology
devices have a range of features that can aid students
with organization, such as note-taking applications,
calendars and virtual sticky notes. These help students
stay more organized by keeping all of their information
centralized and connected between devices. Users
can find what works for them and tailor their devices
to help them perform more effectively. Students need
access to supplemental information. Mobile devices
give students internet access. Although it can be used
inappropriately by some (such as to check Facebook
or Twitter), students often use the Net to find more
information about a topic being discussed in class. Not
only can students use their personal devices to find
extra data on their own, but professors can provide
additional information that is easily accessible to their
students. Students can prepare for work in the field. At
the higher-education level, many students participate
in field work as part of their specific areas of study.
Much of this work requires the use of technology. For
example, graphic design students may work on real
projects that require relevant applications that are
accessed through their personal devices. Learning how
to use these apps in the classroom allows students will
prepare them for using them outside of it.
Laptops should be in schools because laptops will
be much faster than text books. Laptops have more
information then text books. Laptops are much faster
to look up things. Students prefer using laptops to take
notes over paper and pencil methods because it is
neater to type, and takes up less room. Many schools
already require typed papers in English, history, and
foreign language classes, and having your own computer
makes it much easier than having to use a flash
drive to transfer documents between school computers
and your own device. We use computers everyday of
our lives. Kids think they should be allowed to have
laptops at school. This also helps the teacher because
instead of students losing their assignments, they have
it saved in their computers. This may mean yes to laptops
in school even for 6th to 12th classes.
Also, some even say that I need to start saving the
earth’s resources. In a few years much of it may run
out or get reduced in its efficacy. Schools use thousands
of packs of paper a year, meaning several thousand
trees need to be cut down. Laptops eliminate this,
plus are more organized, storing all the work in one
place. Plus, they have less risk of being lost or blown
around by the wind everywhere. Laptops have become
a very important part of schools today. Not only should
teachers and instructors have them but the students
should have one also. The school could save so much
money on books and paper if all the students had their
own laptop. Every school should be working to a one
to one situation.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Cell phone addiction
Dear Editor,
What have we come up to? It seems like now a day we are more and more attached to technology. What
I am referring to is our cell phones. Cell phones are not so much a device but more like a part of us. It
seemed like only yesterday, cell phones were more for business people. Now it’s a whole different story.
There are approximately 88% of the teens in between ages 12-17 that own a cell phone (“Teens, cell
phones, and texting”). This is a great number of teens compared to 51% back in 2006. We teens have made
cell phones much of an attachment to us. Everywhere we go, we can see teens with there cell phones out,
whether one will be at the park, at the movies and sometimes even at church. This is an issue that has to
have an action on because there seems to be some kind of addiction. What I refer to is that now a days most
of us teens seem to not get through the day without our cell phones.
Basic Communication
Although owning a cell phone can be beneficial because there is always a need for communication
between one another, cell phones only give us basic communication. What I mean is that we want to stay
connected with our friends and family but we don’t do it by calling but rather texting. Although texting is
a form of communication, it sometimes just misleads us to forget too express ourselves. There are more
teens that texts now than actually make a call. The graphs show that teens enjoy texting rather than picking
up the phone and saying “hello”. As a teen myself I know its true. I find it easier to text than to call but
in reality we are loosing the form of communication where one can hear the reaction or expression of language.
54% of all teens are texting while only 38% rather make a call (Pew Research). One in three teens
send more than 100 texts messages a day (Pew Research). This is a vast rise since back in 2006 and we can
see that it is only going to be a higher rise on time.
Importance of cell phones
This is a call to action for us teens to limit ourselves on texting before it is a major change in who we
are. What I mean is that sometimes it’s a toll on us when we do not have a cell phone. As an example we
have 16 year old Phillippa Grogan who said “Id rather give up, like, a kidney rather than my phone” (Teens,
cell phones and texting). This for some of us might be how we would think. We become too attached to our
phone that we can’t give it up. This is because we have our own little world when we have our phone. As
a female teen myself, I enjoy texting because I can gossip with my friends without people hearing, this I
think is true for most girls and some guys. Some of us give way to much importance to our cell phones
rather than actually going out and talking to our friends. Sometimes when we are out with friends we are
still texting. What happened to the times where hanging out actually meant hanging out. Actually being able
to have a good time with out having a side conversation wit someone else who is not there.
Private World
We as teens enjoy texting because we feel more privacy about what we say when people are around. I
think we text because it keeps our parents from knowing what we are saying. This means we have our own
“private world”. However, we should know where to have our limits set. We should not text when we are
at family gatherings. Rather than being at the dinner table texting we should start a conversation and make
it interesting. I’m not saying that all teen’s text while at dinner table, but the majority do. I learned that it’s
not right because it’s a moment when one is with the family and texting can wait.
Action
We need to break out of our own little world and step out of the keyboard range. We need to thin k back
when we didn’t give too much of importance to cell phones and when we didn’t get upset because some
one didn’t text us back. This includes the parents as well. The parents have to be aware of when a child is
spending too much time texting. Not encouraging g to look at the messages because it’s our privacy but
rather talking with the teen more often about it. There are some teens that might spend hours of his or her
cell phone rather than being outside doing an activity or even homework. Hopefully we teens make more
use of being with friends and actually communicating like years back, rather than just using our cell phones
and texting most of the time. We should use our cell p-hones and text only when we know its appropriate,
like not at school or at church or at the movies. Maybe limit our texting and hang out more with our friends
to keep the expression of language.
SRI NAGAR: In occupied
Kashmir, complete
shutdown, marked by curfew
and other restrictions,
is being observed in the
Kashmir Valley, today,
against the killing of top
commander of Hizbul
Mujahideen, Sabzar
Ahmed Butt and 11 other
youth by Indian troops in
Pulwama and Baramulla
areas, yesterday.
According to Kashmir
Media Service, all shops and
other business establishments
are closed while traffic
is off the road. A two-day
strike is being observed
across the Valley from today
on the call of joint resistance
leadership comprising Syed
Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar
Farooq and Mohammad
Yasin Malik against the
killings of youth and use of
brute force on civilians by
Indian troops. The leaders
also called for a march to
Tral on Tuesday to pay tributes
to Sabzar Ahmad Butt
and other martyred youth.
Meanwhile, curfew and
other restrictions have been
imposed in Srinagar,
Pulwama, Shopian,
Islamabad, Gandarbal and
other districts of the territory.
Deputy Commissioner,
Srinagar, ordered strict curfew
especially in Kralkhud,
Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa
Kadal, Maharaj Gunj,
The authorities also
ordered closure of schools
and colleges in Srinagar and
resolved.
When the matter was
reported to DSP
Shahdadkot, he immediately
transferred WHC Magsi
to Bahram police station,
but the SHO of that police
station refused to accept
him as WHC. After that,
sources said, Magsi was
sent to police lines of
Assistant Sub Inspector
(ASI) and Writing Head
Constable (WHC) clashed
over alleged illegal gratification
resulted in their transfer.
A dispute occurred
between ASI Ayoob
Mahotto and WHC Ameer
Jan Magsi during which Kambar-Shahdadkot
both slapped and punch
each other ruthlessly. The
onlookers however intervened
and got the dispute
district
and Mujahid Hussain
was posted as new WHC of
Qubo Saeed Khan police
station.
other parts of the territory on
Monday in view of protests
against the killing of Sabzar
Ahmad Butt and 11 other
youth. Mobile and internet
services were suspended on
Saturday afternoon, a day
after authorities lifted a
month-long ban on the
social media. This is the
third time this year that
authorities suspended internet
services. On the other
hand, the authorities have
placed almost all Hurriyet
ASI, cop transferred over clash
ASI Mahotto who is
alleged to be involved in
massive corruption was
transferred to Warah police
station and in this way, DSP
tried to cool down both.
Instead of awarding exemplary
punishment to both
the police officials, higher
police officers kept mum
and just relied on transferring
them from one place to
another which has damaged
the police credibility which
already stands tarnished in
the eyes of the people.
BRISBANE: Convicted
Australian drug trafficker
Schapelle Corby has
returned to Brisbane after
nine years in prison and three
years on parole in Indonesia.
The former beauty therapist
was arrested in 2004 at
Bali airport with 4.2kg of
marijuana hidden in surfing
gear, and sentenced the next
year.
Her case affected foreign
relations between Australia
and Indonesia and outraged
many Australians, with some
viewing her sentence as too
harsh.
She proclaimed innocence
throughout.
Hundreds of police officers
were deployed to assist
with Corby's departure. Her
sister Mercedes, who lives in
Indonesia, shielded her from
journalists' cameras as they
walked to a car.
She was taken in a convoy
from her Bali villa to the
airport, to catch a flight to
Brisbane.
Upon her landing, at
about 05:00 on Sunday local
time (19:00 Saturday GMT),
she and her sister were
reportedly ushered to a waiting
convoy of vans.
Corby has also posted a
picture of her dogs on her
new Instagram account, saying
she would miss
them.Indonesia's drug laws
Two men stabbed to death in US
trying to stop anti-Muslim rant
PORTLAND: A man fatally
stabbed two passengers aboard a
Portland, Oregon, commuter train
after they tried to stop him from
harassing two young women who
appeared to be Muslim, police said
on Saturday.
Police identified the assailant,
who was arrested soon after the
Friday afternoon attack, as Jeremy
Joseph Christian of Portland, a 35-
year-old convicted felon.
A senior researcher with the
Southern Poverty Law Center, in a
blog post, said Christian’s Facebook
page showed he held "some racist
and other extremist beliefs."
The attack unfolded hours before
the start of Ramazan, Islam’s holy
billion of US weapons and
signed investment deals
COLOMBO: At least
126 people have been
killed in floods and landslides
in Sri Lanka - with
about half a million people
displaced.
The torrential rains - the
worst to hit the country
since 2003 - swamped
western and southern
regions. The country has
deployed some 2,000 military
personnel to assist in
the rescue effort.
But officials said access
to some of the affected
areas remains very difficult
and hopes of finding the 97
people still missing are
fading.
The early rainy season
downpours hit large parts
of the country on
Thursday, with some of the
most affected areas in
Kalutara, Ratnapura and
Matara.
Health minister Rajitha
Senaratne was quoted by
local reports as saying: "A
total of 493,455 people are
now housed in 185 relief
camps and health care
facilities are being provided
to them."
With more rains expected
on Sunday and Monday,
rescuers are racing against
time to reach those affected.
MANCHESTER: Britain
police have released CCTV
footage of Manchester
bomber SalmanAbedi on the
night of the attack as thousands
defied the terror threat
to take part in the Great
Manchester Run on Sunday.
Security was tight as
40,000 runners pounded
Manchester’s streets in the
annual half marathon (21.1
km/13.1 miles) a day after
Prime Minister Theresa May
lowered the terror threat
level, which was hiked following
Monday’s carnage.
Investigators gave details
of Abedi’s last hours as they
released photographs from
security cameras showing
the black-clad suicide
bomber wearing jeans and
trainers, a black bodywarmer
and baseball cap, the straps
of his backpack visible on
his shoulders. The 22-yearold,
of Libyan origin, was
born in the northwestern
English city.
The police statement said
one of the last places he went
to was a "city centre flat and
from there he left to make his
way to the Manchester
Arena" where the attack took
place.
"The flat is highly relevant
as a location which we
believe may be the final
assembly place for the
device."
Two unarmed police officers
remained on guard outside
the entrance to Granby
House, believed to contain
the flat in question, according
to a correspondent at the
scene.
"It is surprising because
these people are just under
your nose and you don’t
know it," said Harpreet Lota,
a Manchester resident walking
past the building.
The Greedy Mouse
For sports, for pageantries, and plays,
Thou hast thy eves and holidays
On which the young men and maids meet
To exercise their dancing feet,
Tripping the comely country-round,
With daffodils and daisies crowned.
Thy wakes, thy quintals, here thou hast,
Thy May-poles, too, with garlands graced,
Thy morris-dance, thy Whitsun-ale,
Thy shearing-feast, which never fail,
Thy harvest home, thy wassail-bowl,
That's tossed up after fox-i'-th'-hole,
Thy mummeries, thy Twelfthtide kings
And queens, thy Christmas revellings,
Thy nut-brown mirth, thy russet wit,
And no man pays too dear for it.
O happy life! if that their good
The husbandmen but understood,
Who all the day themselves do please
And younglings with such sports as these,
And, lying down, have naught t' affright
Sweet sleep, that makes more short the night.
- Robert Herrick
Agreedy mouse saw a basket full of corn. He wanted to eat it. So he made a small
hole in the basket. He squeezed in through the hole. He ate a lot of corn. He felt
full and was very happy.
Now he wanted to come out. He tried to come out through the small hole. He could
not. His belly was full. He tried again. But it was of no use.
The mouse started crying. A rabbit was passing by. It heard the mouse’s cry and
asked, “Why are you crying, my friend?”
The mouse explained, “I made a small hole and came into the basket to eat the corn.
Now I am not able to get out through that hole.”
The rabbit said, “It is because you ate too much. Wait till your belly shrinks.” The
rabbit laughed and went away.
The mouse fell asleep in the basket. The next morning his belly had shrunk. But he
wanted to eat some more corn. He forgot all about getting out of the basket. So he ate
the corn and his belly was really big again.
After eating, the mouse remembered that he had to escape. But obviously, he could
not. So he thought, “Oh! Now I will go out tomorrow.”
The cat was the next passerby. He smelt the mouse in the basket. He lifted its lid and
ate the mouse.
ABOUT THE HORSE
Horses and humans have an ancient relationship. Asian
nomads probably domesticated the first horses some 4,000
years ago, and the animals remained essential to many human
societies until the advent of the engine. Horses still hold a place
of honor in many cultures, often linked to heroic exploits in war.
Wild and Domesticated
There is only one species of domestic horse, but around 400
different breeds that specialize in everything from pulling wagons
to racing. All horses are grazers.
While most horses are domestic, others remain wild. Feral
horses are the descendents of once-tame animals that have run
free for generations. Groups of such horses can be found in
many places around the world. Free-roaming North American
mustangs, for example, are the descendents of horses brought
by Europeans more than 400 years ago.
Wild horses generally gather in groups of 3 to 20 animals. A
stallion (mature male) leads the group, which consists of mares
(females) and young foals. When young males become colts, at
around two years of age, the stallion drives them away. The colts
then roam with other young males until they can gather their
own band of females.
The Przewalski's horse is the only truly wild horse whose
ancestors were never domesticated. Ironically, this stocky, sturdy
animal exists today only in captivity. The last wild
Przewalski's horse was seen in Mongolia in 1968.

Champions Trophy: Junaid Khan
looking Kohli wicket in upcoming clash
KARACHI:
LONDON: Pakistan
fast bowler Junaid Khan
has expressed confidence
in his ability to restrict
India captain Virat Kohli
in the upcoming
Champions Trophy citing
his previous record against
the batsman. Khan has dismissed
Kohli three times
in their four previous
meetings and off the 22
balls that he has bowled to
the right hander, he has
conceded just 2 runs.
“I have dismissed him
in three out of the four
matches we have faced
each other. He is a brilliant
batsman but he has failed
against me,” Indian media
quoted Khan as saying.
India and Pakistan go
face-to-face in their tournament
opener on June 4
in Birmingham, in what
could be an intense affair
given the seasoned rivalry
between the two nations
and the occasion of an ICC
event.
The 27-year-old
Pakistani believes that he
holds a psychological
advantage over the India
captain, and although it
has been four years since
the two squared off on the
field, Kohli would feel the
pressure of the past record.
“When I face him, I will
consider him the same
Kohli. I may be wrong but
I think he will also think of
me as the same Junaid that
has taken his wicket
before, which might make
him go on the defensive a
bit more and therefore lose
his wicket,” said Khan.
The ICC Champions
Trophy 2017 would be an
eight-team tournament,
and it is being organized at
Ramiz urges Sarfraz to be ‘flexible’
KARACHI: New captain Sarfraz Ahmed
will face his stiffest test yet when he leads
unfancied Pakistan in the Champion’s
Trophy — starting with a highly-charged
clash against India.
After qualifying by the skin of their teeth,
Pakistan will need to overcome serious batting
deficiencies to be competitive following
their struggles in the one-day format in
recent years. Pakistan’s tournament in
England starts with the toughest of games
against arch-rivals India, the defending
champions, in Birmingham on June 4.
The wicketkeeper-batsman is credited
with injecting new energy after winning
three of his first four games, two against the
West Indies and one against lowly
Zimbabwe. But former captain Ramiz Raja
believes the team lacks the skill-set needed to
regularly beat top sides in modern limitedovers
cricket, which tilts heavily towards batting.
“They say a captain is as good as his
team and this side lacks power-hitting skills,”
Raja toldAFP. “Also, to win, he needs to find
wickets with the new ball. He has to be in
control of his emotions — he must have a
flexible plan based on discipline to create a
winning environment.”
four-year intervals over the
past three editions. There
have been seven editions
of the league since the first
one in 1998 and India are
the defending champions,
having won the previous
tournament in 2013.
Owing to the constantly
deteriorating diplomatic
relations India-Pakistan
cricket encounters have
been limited to ICC tournaments
and Asia Cups,
especially since the
Mumbai terrors attacks of
2008. However, Pakistan
did visit India for a short
limited-overs series in
2012-13.
Khan feels that the
experience of playing
county cricket in England
that he possesses would
hold him in good stead. “I
know how these wickets
behave in this weather, so I
know what kind of deliveries
to bowl and how to
bowl them.”
Having full faith in his
captain, Sarfraz Ahmed,
Khan went on to say, “I
have played two ODI
matches under his captaincy
against the West Indies
and we won both matches,
with me claiming three
wickets.
“He is a good leader
and encourages the
bowlers to bowl the way
they want to, while also
giving his own input.”
Kumar Sangakkara
makes history
Sports Reporter
KARACHI: Kumar
Sangakkara might be just
five months shy of his 40th
birthday but the Sri Lankan's
appetite for scoring runs is as
strong as ever.in Essex, the
Surrey signing, who this
week announced this would
be his final season of firstclass
cricket, became just the
eighth player in history to
register five consecutive
first-class centuries, having
notched scores of 136, 105,
114 and 120 in his four previous
trips to the middle in
the County Championship.
But Sangakkara saved
his best for the clash with
Essex at Chelmsford, rescuing
his side from dire
straits at 5-31 with a magnificent
177 not out, as the
visitors went to the close on
day one at 7-334.
India must pay $70m if they
don’t play us, says Sethi
Clashes
between Pakistan and India
are the most watched games
in cricket by a margin but
political tension between the
two neighbouring countries
has meant matches between
the two come few and far
between.
The lack of bilateral
series between the two
countries not only frustrates
cricketing fans of the two
countries but also the millions
of neutrals who are
missing out on a spectacle
filled with passion, talent
and pressure.
While both boards have
expressed eagerness to play
against each other, the
Board of Control for Cricket
in India (BCCI) keep insisting
they are yet to receive
the go-ahead from their
government.
The Pakistan Cricket
Board (PCB), however, is
running out of patience and
feels the BCCI is going back
on an MoU signed by the
two boards that stated
Pakistan will host India in a
bilateral series next.
And PCB Executive
Committee head Najam
Sethi insists that the MoU,
contrary to popular opinon,
is legally binding. “We have
discussed this with some of
the leading legal minds
around, both in Pakistan and
abroad, and all of them
agree we are in a position to
take legal action against the
BCCI if they do not play us
in a series hosted by us,”
said Sethi.
However, the board will
not be taking legal action
immediately. “We have had
two meetings with the
BCCI. We will have a third
meeting in which the
International Cricket
Council (ICC) will be
involved,” he said.
Agriculture sector’s allocation not likely to
yield positive impact on growers: FPCCI
ISLAMABAD: The
Federation of Pakistan
Chambers of Commerce and
Industries has regretted the
ignoring of horticulture sector
in the federal budget and
said that the allocation and
incentives for the agriculture
sector were not likely to
yield positive impact on
growers in the short term.
Talking to media, FPCCI
Regional Chairman on
Horticulture Exports
Committee Ahmad Jawad
said more or less the same
budget allocation was
announced for the growers,
even though the horticulture
LAHORE: Punjab government’s
relief to people have
opened here.
According to
spokesman of the provincial
government high quality
edibles including wheat
sector expected some concrete
relief.
He said that no incentives
were given on horticulture
exports in the budget. The
sector requires strong attention
of the government as
despite having huge potential
Pakistan’s horticulture
export share in the international
market was only 0.3
percent. The government
should understand that horticulture
sector has the potential
to increase exports and it
should be facilitated.
He said they were expecting
announcement of incentives
to establish cool chain
flour, sugar, pulses, fruits,
vegetables, and meat are
available at these bazaars at
Rs 8-10 lower price.
Punjab government has
established 31 such bazaars
in Lahore while across the
province it has established
a total of 318 bazaars.
Lahore: Punjab Govt’s thrifty
Ramzan bazaars open
LAHORE: People busy in purchasing daily commodities from Sasta Ramzan Bazaar at
Shadman.
Calling the establishing
of thrifty Ramzan bazaars
encouraging the people
demand that the prices and
quality of edibles should be
checked on daily basis so
the quality goods are made
available to the people for
the hole month of Ramzan.
and value addition infrastructure
to increase exports
of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The government has Rs
1 trillion PSDP, but surprisingly
no horticulture project
is considered worthy of getting
financing.
He said that they reject
the proposal to increase the
withholding tax rate on nonfilers,
as this move would
affect all the traders. Until
and unless proper tax
reforms with the objective of
facilitating the tax payers are
not under taken the tax compliance
will not increase.
However, Jawad appreciated
the government decision
to cut the markup rate at
the rate of 9.9 pc up to 12.5
acres of land including
revised the agriculture credit
of Rs 1000 billion through
ZTBL and NBP.
He said the rates of Urea
and DAP fertilizer were likely
to remain unchanged as
announced in last year budget.
Even the tubewell tariff
has been retained at Rs 5.35
per unit like last year budget.
The reduction of sale tax on
DAP from Rs 400 to Rs 100
is a welcome move.
Profiteers increase
fruit prices with
advent of Ramazan
LAHORE: Profiteers in
Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad,
Peshawar have raised the
fruits prices owing to its rising
demand in Ramazan.
All the fruits available in
market have witnessed an
increase landing the fast
observing faithful into a worrisome
state. Apples are
being sold between Rs250-
300/ kg, mangoes Rs120-
150/ kg, bananas Rs150/
dozen, watermelon Rs40/ kg,
melons Rs60/ kg, peaches
Rs160/kg.
The price list issued by the
controlling authorities are not
in effect in any of the shops.
People have demanded
the government to initiate
action against profiteers and
decrease prices of fruits. Fruit
vendors and wholesalers
increase prices every year
and fleece customers without
any fear of being penalized or
caught by the toothless price
regulation mechanism of district
administration.
machinery is a good step for
the farmers who are interested
to import that as well
as agriculture diesel engines
(from 3 to 36 HP) have also
been given exemption from
sales tax, he said. He also
called for exempting all
agriculture input from sales
tax. It is sheer injustice that
farmers have to pay huge
amount of tax on basic
function of farming. He
said that no announcement
was made in the budget to
cover the import export
gap, which seems that next
year our export performance
would be poor.
NEW YORK: "Sell in
May and go away" is perhaps
the oldest saw on Wall
no shortage of U.S. mutual
this year.
After all, the S&P 500
dividends, of 10.8 percent
over the last six months,
essentially capturing all of
the average rolling 12-
month total return on the
index since 1990, so why
not cash in?
Indeed, political drama
"If anything you might
Zaccarelli, Chief
Cornerstone Financial
North Carolina, who bases
his bullishness on the
healthy outlook for the
global economy rather than
expectations for a policy
boost from the Trump
administration.
While stocks appear to
have priced in hope for a
Trump stimulus this year,
Zaccarelli says his expectations
for progress on
Trump's agenda in 2017 has
recently tumbled to 40/60
from 80/20 because he
doesn't see Trump gaining
few months down the road.
"If we go the entire year
and Washington does nothing,
no tax reform, no repatriation,
I think there will be
a little disappointment," he
said. "Ironically enough,
the disappointment will be
because people will realize
they went the whole year
and got nothing done."

ISLAMABAD: Adviser
to Prime Minister Amir
Muqam has said that the
government is working
hard to upgrade power
besides power projects to
eliminate load shedding by
Addressing a news conference
KARACHI: Pakistan's
newly released Economic
Survey says that under
China Pakistan Economic
Corridor (CPEC), 820 km
long line is planned to be
developed. The cross border
optical fiber cable project
has already been established
to connect it from
Khunjerab onwards to
Rawalpindi. The project,
currently under implementation
with work on 220 km
completed, is expected to
finish by 2017. The estimated
cost of the project is US$
44 million. Other IT projects
are also underway to
achieve a higher standard of
connectivity.
According to the survey,
CPEC is part of China's One
Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative
which aims to bring
the region together through
enhanced connectivity. With
PESHAWAR: Muslim League-N leader, Ameer Muqam
addressing to media persons during a press conference.
220km of CPEC's 820-km-long line
completed; other projects also underway
initiation in 2013, CPEC has
expanded to encompass
cooperation in a large number
of sectors under its short
to long term plans.
Pakistan's geostrategic location
would pay real dividends
allowing regional
countries access to warm
waters through shortest land
routes.
The benefits, therefore,
would not just be limited to
the two partnering countries
but to the region as a whole.
The Project would serve to
bring the peoples together,
promote new economic
relationships and usher in an
era of peace and prosperity
to this part of the world.
Projects under CPEC
Projects under the CPEC
portfolio are broadly categorized
into 'Early Harvest'
projects with completion by
2018, Short and Medium
Term projects, which are
aimed for completion by
2020 and 2025 respectively.
The two sides also aim to
take the initiative forward
under the CPEC Long Term
Plan. The sectors of cooperation
include but are not
limited to the energy sector,
infrastructure development
in the area of rail and road
network, development of
Gwadar as a modern port
city, establishment of industrial
parks and improving IT
connectivity through optical
fiber. A brief description of
the cooperation under
CPEC is given below:
Cooperation in the Energy
Sector Pakistan expects to
overcome its energy shortage
by 2018.
The Government, fully
conscious of its responsibility,
has its prime focus on
alleviating these shortages.
