A more detailed technicalnote for statisticians is also published. As the financial crisis escalated from late summer 2008,governments and central banks in European countries have intervened through variousoperations in an effort to restore confidence in the financial system, at first to rescue singlefinancial institutions in distress, and then through coordinated interventions broadly targetingfinancial institutions regardless of whether they were in distress or not, recognising the systemicaspect of the situation. Three aspects of the crisis have raised particular challenges forstatisticians - the uncertainty over asset values, the difficulty in measuring risks which publicbodies are taking on, and the rapid development of new forms of intervention.____________________________________________________________________Source: European Commission
