AviTrader WEEKLY AVIATION HEADLINES 6 MRO & PRODUCTION GA Telesis CRGSE expands electric power offerings to include A320 APU starter generator capability GA Telesis Component Repair Group Southeast has upgraded its state-of-the-art Avtron Model K838AT-500 IDG/Starter Generator test stand for use on the A320 APU Starter Generator. Upgrades were made as part of a continuing initiative to expand the shop’s testing capabilities for power generating components. “The flexibility of our Avtron test stand allows quick and easy set up for virtually any IDG or Generator in operation today,” said Nicholas Gimbel, Engineering manager for GAT CRGSE. “With the addition of various adapters, harnesses and software upgrades we can easily add repair/overhaul capability to test new product more efficiently and with greater precision,” he added. Piedmont Aviation Component Services signs four year APU maintenance agreement with ExpressJet Airlines Piedmont Aviation Component Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TAT Technologies, signed a four year APU maintenance agreement with ExpressJet Airlines covering its CRJ-200 fleet of 88 aircraft 36-150RJ APU. The agreement’s total value may reach $12m. For many years, Piedmont has been an industry leader in providing MRO services to the series 36-150 APU’s as an Authorized Honeywell Service Center. New ARC shop at Hawker Pacific Aerospace Hawker Pacific Aerospace opened its new ARC (Airframe Related Component) shop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Thereby the landing gear specialist broadens its product portfolio by adding services for thrust reversers. The facility has already received the first five thrust reverser units (V2500) of launch customer Spirit Airlines. Dedicated to ARC services, Hawker Pacific Aerospace’s Fort Lauderdale facility currently serves as the hub of thrust reverser services for Lufthansa Technik’s customers within the Americas. The new shop spreads over 12,000 ft² and can handle the Wizz Air to get new aircraft hangar at Budapest Wizz Air will have a new aircraft maintenance hangar in Budapest within a year’s time according to the agreement signed on Tuesday, June 24th, by Budapest Airport and Wizz Air. The signing of the new lease agreement for 15 years was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Wizz Air’s operations in Hungary and the arrival of the eighth aircraft to its base in Budapest. A new maintenance and overhaul hangar will be built exclusively for Wizz Air aircraft at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport according to the lease agreement. Budapest Airport will build the new facility by summer 2015 for Wizz Air to lease for 15 years. The investment by Budapest Airport is over €3m (900 million HUF) and the new facility will be handed over by August 2015 to Wizz Air. The new hangar will be built in – between the existing aircraft maintenance hangars operated by Wizz Air planes, soon to be serviced in Budapest Lufthansa Technik and Aeroplex, with direct access to the maintenance apron. The new hangar, approx. 2,000 m², will be able to accommodate one aircraft at a time and its size will allow the new, sharklet-equipped Airbus A 321 Neo type aircraft that might join the Wizz fleet in the coming years. concurrent servicing of six to eight thrust reversers. Flying Colours Corp. achieves Qatar maintenance approval Wizz Air Flying Colours Corp., the Canada-based completions, refurbishment and maintenance specialists, has received approval from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) to carry out maintenance work on business aircraft registered in the State of Qatar. The approval, which was awarded on June 17th, means that a full range of regular and line maintenance work can be undertaken at Flying Colours Corp’s Peterborough, Canadabased facility on business jets originating from this Middle East region. QCAA status enables Flying Colours Corp. to undertake continuing airworthiness and maintenance work on aircraft, including all those under its Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) approval including the full Bombardier Challenger range, Bombardier Global Express, and the Dassault Falcon family. AFI KLM E&M modifies and provides component support for GainJet 737- 400 GainJet Aviation S.A. contracted AFI KLM E&M to carry out cabin modifications on a Boeing 737-400 68 seats VIP configuration, which they acquired from the AIR FRANCE KLM group in order to expand their fleet of VIP aircraft. The VIP aircraft charter operator will also rely on the expertise and reliability of AFI KLM E&M to provide component support for the same aircraft. AFI KLM E&M’s subsidiary KLM UK Engineering, specializing in base maintenance (C-check) and cabin modifications on regional and single-aisle passenger aircraft, carried out the work at its Norwich facility to transform the aircraft into a comfortable business jet. The aircraft cabin has been completely refurbished and can now carry 68 passengers in reclining, leather-upholstered Business Class seats, while the baggage hold has been adapted to contain up to 5.7 tons of baggage. Embraer concludes preliminary design review of the E190-E2 Embraer concluded the Joint Definition Phase (JDP) of the E190-E2 jet, at the end of May, by conducting the preliminary design review. The Company has also completed the wind tunnel tests of the E190-E2, which will be the first model of the second generation of the E-Jets family of commercial jets for the 70 to 130-seat segment, the E-Jets E2, which are planned to enter service in 2018. The next step in the development of the E190-E2 is the critical design review, when the product’s maturity will be validated, enabling the production of the prototypes to begin. Furthermore, Embraer’s engineering team has already flown the airplane through virtual simulations, which enable the evaluation of its flight characteristics and provides engineers with many virtual flight hours, well before the aircraft ever leaves the ground. Derived from the E190-E2 and scheduled to begin revenue service in 2019, the E195-E2 entered its Joint Definition Phase in May 2014. Concurrent with these developments, Embraer has concluded the concept studies of the E175-E2, which is expected to enter service in 2020, commencing the preliminary studies as well as the aerodynamic wind tunnel tests. The E175-E2 model will have wings and engines that are optimized for the aircraft’s size, distinctly different from the configuration that was adopted for the E190-E2 and E195-E2. Astronics to provide primary electronic power system for Daher-Socata 2014 TBM 900 Astronics Corporation was selected to provide the primary power distribution system for the Daher-Socata TBM 900 aircraft. The Electronic Power System from Astronics combines alternator, generator, and primary power bus system control into a single unit, allowing semi-automatic start-up. The system also includes an integrated external power control function which allows connection of any power source to the main bus. The system design reduces the number of separate controllers, improving system reliability and reducing aircraft weight. AAR lands supply chain deal with Kenya Airways AAR, a global aerospace, government and defense contractor, has become the first aviation company to land a multi-year deal under the Obama administration’s “Doing Business in Africa” initiative. AAR signed a five-year multi-million dollar agreement with Kenya Airways to provide power-bythe-hour component support for its fleet of 737NG aircraft. AAR will place inventory on site in Nairobi while offering additional rotable pool support from its newly established supply chain hub in Brussels. This deal builds Aleris Zhenjiang achieves Nadcap accreditation for aerospace plate production Aleris attained Nadcap accreditation for its new rolling mill in Zhenjiang, China, an industry standard for the production of aircraft aluminum plate and a prerequisite for inclusion on the Qualified Product List (QPL) for major aircraft manufacturers. The certification follows audits performed by the Performance Review Institute in May 2014, with respect to Nadcap requirements for heat treating and non-destructive testing. Aleris’ $350m hot rolling mill unveiled in early 2013 was designed to meet fast-growing national and global demand for technically advanced aluminum plate products for global aerospace and commercial plate customers. With the achievement of Nadcap accreditation, the company is preparing to move into the final stages of qualification with major aircraft manufacturers, with shipments of aircraft plate expected to begin in the third quarter. Once the qualification process is complete, Aleris Zhenjiang is expected to be one of the first facilities in Asia Pacific to produce aluminum plate for the major global aircraft manufacturers. Since opening last year, Aleris Zhenjiang has been shipping orders to commercial plate customers globally. These products serve a number of technically demanding end uses including engineering, transportation, ship-building, and air separation units. As a pre-requisite for these end uses the Zhenjiang plant has also received approval from many certification societies such as TUV, the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, Class NK, and Bureau Veritas to supply products into ship-building, silo, pressure vessel and other industries.
