ABSTRACT
The Power of Art and the Art of Power
Foucault‐inspired Studies in the Royal Danish Academy of Art, ca. 1750‐1800.
This dissertation investigates the power relations concerning the Royal Danish Aca-
demy of Arts in the period ca. 1750-1800. Primarily inspired by Michel Foucault’s
thoughts on power, it demonstrates how the Academy tried to manage the art world
of the last half of the 18th century. The first part of the dissertation shows how the
Academy constructed its position in distinction to the established guild system, there-
by radical redefining the understanding of the pictorial arts. The second part investi-
gates, how this organization of the art and artist was administrated in the academic
practice and how this practice incorporated measures of control, thereby securing the
new order. In addition an example of resistance to the academic system is discussed.
Finally it is demonstrated how the academic art exhibitions tried to control the public
relations to art.
