Defects and damage in parchment manuscripts

An aid to visual examination of parchment

for writing purposes

This thesis describes the defects and damage

of parchment that are to be found in

parchment manuscripts. The different forms

and types of defects and damage are categorised

and described systematically, both

as they have made themselves felt during

the production of the parchment and the

medieval book and later during the usage

and storage of the manuscripts.

They are documented with a large number

of pictures which can be used as an aid to a

visual examination of parchment for writing

purposes. Some of the pictures document

the results of experimental parchmentmaking

that was carried out in order to

be able to learn more about the origin of

different types of defects and damage and

Konservering af palmebladsmanuskripter

med udgangspunkt i Det Kongelige Biblioteks

samling

Dette speciale giver en introduktion til

palmebladmanuskripter, hvor de kommer

fra, og hvorledes de er fremstillet. Palmebladenes

opbygning, molekylestruktur og

indholdsstoffer beskrives, og der gives et

billede af, hvorledes bladene nedbrydes.

Herefter gives en introduktion til Det Kgl.

Biblioteks samling af palmeblade. Manuskripternes

bevaringstilstand og tidligere

konserveringer beskrives. Hovedproblemerne

vedrørende oliering og udtørring af

palmebladene gennemgås. Endelig afprøves

forskellige konserveringsmetoder, og på

baggrund af disse, gives forslag til hvordan

samlingen af palmebladsmanuskripter på

Det Kgl. Bibliotek bedst bevares.

to compare and identify these more easily

on the folios of the historical manuscripts.

The results can be of use not only for the

codicologists in enabling them to acquire

a better understanding of the physical

appearance of the parchment that is used

as writing support in different forms of

manuscript but also for the conservators,

who are helped to avoid misinterpreting

as damage traces of the manufacturing

process of the parchment or its natural

behaviour. Some of the defects and damage

found in parchment manuscripts can serve

as historical evidence about the manuscripts

themselves and they should be preserved

or documented so that they can also be

studied in the future. A short, general introduction

about parchment, its structure and

the historical methods used in its production

is also included. Different methods of

visual examination of parchment and the

ways in which these can be documented are

described.
