Summary This introduction contains an overview of the content in each article and their main points. Furthermore, it contains refl ections pertaining to themes raised in all the articles. It highlights the concepts and themes that the articles refer to or raise, such as health and participation. A critical approach wishes to challenge existing relations of power and inequality. Challenged are among others the concept of health connected to the possibility of participation for both pupils and teachers in schools. It is obvious that political decisions regarding the introduction of prepacked school lunches as well as the organisation of spaces for physical activity, do not relate to the lived experience of pupils and teachers. Furthermore, they are not invited to participate actively in decision-making related to these interventions. Participation in health related health-promoting interventions have a potential for improving health and physical activity if they activate children’s and teachers’ motivation and ownership. This is not a case in the way that these health-promoting projects are carried out in Danish schools and their form becomes a barrier in relation to change.
