Great American Novels
Welcome to the English-language book club. This club is for
anyone interested in reading and discussing English and American
literature, regardless of your nationality.
This season we will be reading Great American Novels; which
according to The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is: ‘any
novel that is regarded as having successfully represented an
important time in US history or one that tells a story that is typical
of America.’
All of the eight novels in this book club fit this description. Some
of them are old and already canonized as Great American Novels.
Others are quite new, but often mentioned as examples of the
Great American Novel of our time.
Suggested reading:
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
