Metropole

Dagmar Koptein, of Liibeck, Norlh Germany, has been active as a conceft

organist in the USA, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries since 1978. She

studied first at the Academy for Church Music in Herfbrd (completing her Bexam)

and later at the State Academy of Music in Liibeck, where her studies

emphasized organ performance and composition. In 1981 she took a leave of

absence to pursue a course of foreign study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki,

Finland, concentrating on organ-literature and improvisation. After returning to

Liibeck she completed her Diploma Examination in organ playing (1983) and the

Conceft Examination (1985), the highest distinction fbr a perfomer. Koptein's

many visits to Finland have influenced her compositional style, a style which

reflects a Scandinavian solitude and spaciousness in a mystical, melancholy, and

dramatic musical language. Her organ works have been broadcast by Finnish

Radio (Yleisradio) and by North German Radio (NDR) Hamburg.

The year 1986 brought a 65-minute portrait of the organisVcomposer on German

television (ARD-"Music liom the Horizon", NDR Hamburg 1986), filmed in

Liibeck, Schleswig-Holstein, and Finland. The film profiled Koptein and her

career, and offered examples ofher music accompanied by landscape scenes.

For many years Dagmar Koptein has been one of the organists of Liibeck, a city

which has taken its place in history as a famed center of organ music. Since 1981

she has also been organist for the Finnish congregation in Liibeck. In recent years

she has made many concerl tours to the arctic region of Scandinavia, from which

she acquired her aftrliation with the @stnorsk Musikkforlag in Vardp (northern

Norway), the publisher of her music.

Her avla hun diplomeksamen i 1983 og

konserteksamen i 1985.

orgelkomposisjoner.

Hennes musikk var her

hennes orgelkomposisj oner.

Rovaniemi, the city at the northernmost boundary of the Arctic Circle in Finland, boasts one

of the finest organs Dagmar Koptein has encountered in her many concert tours. This threemanual

organ by the firm of Bruno Christensen and Sons (Denmark) was built in 1987; this

instrument is especially well suited to the performance of Koptein's own compositions, as

these works bring into play all of the possible sound colors of a large organ.
