SUMMARY
The Regional Laboratory in Copenhagen has in 2002 carried out the project no. 2002-20-64-
0079 (02322-03) “Monitoring and control of food additives: Investigation of colouring agents
and sweeteners in ice-lollies especially lemonade and fruit ice/sorbet” The investigation is
part of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administrations programme for monitoring of food
additives.
The Veterinary and Food Administration has for several years followed the use of selected
food additives in food on the Danish market. The monitoring was started in 1995 as part of
the monitoring demanded in EEC´s directives for food additives from the member states.
The purpose of the project is partly to monitor the actual occurrence and the use of colouring
agents and intense sweeteners in ice-lollies on the Danish market, partly to control if current
legal maximum levels are exceeded and if illegal use or faulty declarations occur.
In the period 29. April to 30. June 2002 69 samples have been selected for this project.
Of the 69 samples analysed, 5 samples corresponding to 7 % have shown one or more faulty
declarations. No illegal uses or transgressions of maximum levels have been found. A total of
9 faulty declarations have been found in 5 samples. In 3 samples there was lack of a Danish
declaration and 1 sample had 4 faulty declarations. In addition, 6 subsamples of ice-lolly coating,
chewing gum or wine gums contained in some of the samples were analysed.
Only minor disagreements between the declaration of food additives and the number of detected
faults concerning colouring agents and sweeteners have been found in this investigation.
This is in agreement with the previous investigation (ref. 2).
Analytical results with the relevant remarks for control have been sent to the regional authorities,
which are responsible for the necessary follow up.
