MESA/CISCO Professional Development Program I am an engineering major with hopes of working in the technology industry, specializing in network architecture and communication. Beginning of last semester, I was selected to participate in the state wide MESA/Cisco development program. Unsure of what the program was and how I would benefit from it, I followed through with it and am forever grateful. With a full class load, part time job, and family, my schedule alone caused hesitation towards extracurricular activities. This program helps their participants grow, not as students, but as professionals. By Javier Nichols After being paired with an actual Cisco employee as your mentor, you work one-on-one to develop the skills and professional acumen needed to standout in the workforce. Working with my mentor, Noé Noé Lozano interviewing Fresno State MESA student Lozano, an industrial engineer and program manager at Cisco Systems, we went over resume creation and assessment, developing a network of contacts, and interview performance. As students, we use time management while developing skills to complete tasks and problem solve. The MESA/Cisco program supplements our abilities by enhancing the skills we don’t get out of school. With Noé’s guidance, I have reached a point where I am confident with my resume, my interviewing skills, and now have much better idea of how to network with other professionals. The climax of the program is another visit to Cisco HQ for mock interviews and a chance to apply for a Cisco internship. I asked my mentor, Noé Lozano, what skills nurtured by the MESA/Cisco program he thinks prove most valuable in a work environment like his. He said, “The ability to identify and develop the soft skills needed to shine in a professional environment.” He goes on to highlight the value of this program, “The technical skills are what school is for; this program helps nurture one’s ability to create their brand, showcase their talents, and present themselves in a professional manner.” If you’re working towards a career in the technology “this program helps nurture one’s ability to create…” -Noé Lozano industry, and an application window opens don’t hesitate to get yours in. Every May, as Gavilan College gears up for graduation, the TRIO Student Support Services Program begins to reach out to the surrounding high school seniors who plan on attending Gavilan College. The reason is to invite them to apply for TRIO’s Summer Bridge, which is a five-week experience. It helps transition-incoming students that recently graduated from high school to be successful students at Gavilan College. The goal of Summer Bridge is to help advance students in their mathematics coursework, develop skills to be successful students, and become part of a community of support. Students that have completed Summer Bridge remained students in the TRIO Student Support Services Program. The program involves a strong unified approach involving academic and student services along with the natural sciences division. Over the last two years, Summer Bridge has helped students on multiple levels. It is an opportunity that has served first-generation college students. This means they are the first in their families to attend a college. TRIO provides them the help they need to accomplish their educational goal of graduating and/or transferring to a four-year university. Crossing the Bridge: The TRIO Summer Bridge Experience By: Esteban Talavera David Esquivel, a CSIS Computer Programming major and current TRIO student, was part of the 2014 Summer Bridge experience. When asked about his experience, he said that it was a “great [place] for meeting new people and getting a head start on college life.” Summer Bridge does just that. Both the 2014 and 2015 cohort jumped 1 to 3 math courses after reassessment which could save a student 1 to 3 semesters of math courses. Tarianna Perez, an Animal Science major and Rho Alpha Mu club president, pointed out that “Summer Bridge Program is a huge benefit and a great opportunity. [The TRIO Students] get so much support and when we have questions, we know who to go to. You are always in the loop of things and you know what is going on and can possibly get great opportunities.” TRIO is currently taking applications for this year’s Summer Bridge, which will be taking place June 20—July 22, 2016.
