Welcome
To Berlin’s 31 sT long nigHT oF museums
The Long Night of Museums is one of Berlin’s best
known events giving visitors from all over the
world a great overview of the museum landscape
in Germany’s capital. About 110 museums will
open their doors on August 25th 2012 from 6 p.m.
until 2 a.m. to show their collections, exhibitions,
and to offer guided tours and special programmes
to the public. This autumn Berlin is celebrating its
775th anniversary with a special focus on its beginnings
in medieval times as well as its current
character as a cosmopolitan and diverse city (p. 34).
Therefore several museums will display items from
their collections, offer special guided tours and
show musical and literary performances related to
the 775 theme.
TickeTs
The Kombiticket provides entry to all participating
venues, unlimited use of the shuttle bus service
and unlimited use of public transportation (BVG
and S­Bahn) in zones ABC (3 p.m.–5 a.m. Sunday).

sHuTTle Buses
Although many venues are within walking distance
from the two centres (Kulturforum and Museumsinsel),
many more are spread throughout the
city; therefore the shuttle bus service helps you to
navigate your way between the museums and enables
you to see as much as possible. On each bus
there will be a steward on hand answering any
question you may have.
suiTABle For Foreigners?
People are often unsure whether the Long Night of
Museums is suitable for non­German speakers.
The answer is: yes, it is! Due to the wide range of
participating programmes on offer, German is no
precondition for attending the Long Night. Several
venues offer information in English, and many exhibitions
and parts of the special programmes will
be self­explanatory. Some suggestions are given
in the following. From July 30th 2012 onwards you
can also find the whole programme in English on
the website www.lange­nacht­der­museen.de.
ProgrAmme HigHligHTs
u Berliner Dom
The largest and most prominent church in Berlin
invites visitors to explore its interiors and to discover
how it has evolved from its early stages until
today. The dome will open its doors with a Vespers
by the organist Andreas Sieling. You will also have
the opportunity to have a look at the renowned
Sauer­Orgel by taking part in guided tours at 7,
7.45 and 8.30 p.m. In the course of the evening
Andreas Sieling will play Berlin organ music (9 and
10 p.m.) and festive brass music will entertain the
visitors at 11 and 12 p.m.
u Ephraim-Palais
The grand Rococo mansion with its impressive oval
staircase houses various special exhibitions of the
City Museum Berlin concerning Berlin’s history of art
and culture. Two exhibitions will be presented – one
about important citizens of Berlin who had an essential
part in forming the city that we know today, and
the other about the stage designer and illustrator
Werner Victor Toeffling. Apart from that, you can either
let a professional scissor cutter make a silhouette
of your liking or you can be a scissor cutter yourself
(6–9 p.m.). Later at night, two young local
musicians will amaze you with electronic Jazz­Swing
(9 p.m.–1 a.m.).
u Zoo-Aquarium
With its extensive biodiversity, Berlin’s Zoo­Aquarium
ranks among the most significant show aquariums
worldwide. At 8, 9.30 and 11 p.m. visitors
will have the chance to see how sea dwellers, like
sharks and rays, are fed and there will also be a
special exhibition presenting the breeding and
keeping of jellyfish. Moreover, the duo Bassophon
will provide accompanying musical entertainment.
u DDR Museum
In this museum you will have the opportunity to
experience the life in the GDR in all its facets and
its history at first hand. The programme will focus
on the celebration of East Berlin’s 750th anniversary
in 1987, by providing a multimedia presentation
(8 p.m.) and by playing music from the festivities
(10–11 p.m.). Next to that, hits and unknown
musical treasures from GDR times about Berlin
and the year 1987 will be played all night long.
u MocTA
The trashiest museum in the world shows artworks
made of recycled material. The night begins
with a DADA­Opera – a performance called »Trash
queen emigrates and immigrates« (8 p.m.). Visitors
will also have the chance to watch a movie
about migration (9 p.m.) and to marvel at the
trash iest items from the largest collection of artist
books which the collector Reinhard Gruener himself
will present at 10 p.m.
