The XAR ® steels are described in detail in
our material specifications. Further details
can be found on our website and the customer
CD “Special Structural Steels”.
A certain minimum carbon content is indispensable
to achieve such high hardness for
the quenched, or quenched and tempered,
XAR ® steels. This is because the carbon
content is proportional to the maximum
hardness in steel (Fig. 2). A steel with a
mean hardness of 400 HBW, for instance,
has to be alloyed with roughly 0.14% C.
The addition of molybdenum, nickel and
boron alloys simultaneously ensures a uniform
property profile in the through-thickness
direction. It is important for the wear
behavior that with increasing sheet gauge
and hardness, the XAR ® steels contain as
much as 1.5% chromium. In wear testing,
chromium has proven to be very effective
against wear, especially in weak acid media.
This has been confirmed by extensive tests
at the Institute for Tribology at Mannheim
University for Applied Sciences.
The normalizing rolled, wear-resistant special
structural steel XAR ® 300 is described
in material specification 760. It has a hardness
ranging from 270 to 340 HBW in thicknesses
up to 50 mm and is characterized
by a high surface quality. It is particularly
suitable for hot forming applications.
Fig. 3 provides an overview of the chemical
compo sition of the heat, of the delivery
condition, and of the typical carbon equivalent
for the wear-resistant special structural
steels XAR ® . Fig. 4 additionally shows the
hardness levels achieved in the steels, which
also are the main basis for their designated
names, and their typical scatter.
The wear-resistant special structural steels
XAR ® are high-tech materials. The optimum
combination of uniform high hardness, good
toughness and low alloy contents make
these steels ideal material for numerous
fields of use.
The newly developed software package
“ProWear” can be used to predict the wear
behavior and service life of XAR ® steels.
“ProWear” is based on ThyssenKrupp Steel
Europe’s over 30-year experience in the
wear-resistant steel sector. Parameters
include the hardness of the steel, its chemical
composition, the hardness of the mating
material causing the wear, and ambient
conditions. The software can be used to
estimate the suitability of various materials
and is therefore an effective aid to steel
selection. “ProWear” is available free of
charge on request.
The processing behavior of plate made of
XAR ® , above all, is central to the effective
and economical use over a long service
life and to structure maintenance. This
publi cation contains recommendations on
the most important processing techniques;
users should heed these when processing.
The following techniques are featured here:
• Hot and cold forming
• Machining
Radladerschaufel
Wheel excavator bucket
• Thermal cutting
• Welding
Users are also advised to consult
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s plate experts
direct, especially if processing these wearresistant
special structural steels for the
first time.
