PLOUGHING A FURROW FOR THE MODEL MARKET -
Teil 2
Schuco shows its size
The following ideas were systematically
developed in 2004. Collectors
were pleased to see new add-on parts
for existing models, diorama models
and new agricultural machinery, such as
a disc harrow and another sickle bar.
The highlight of the year can be seen as
the beginning of working with a scale of
1:18. And naturally, the rst model that
was selected in this category was the
Porsche tractor. And quality was, in turn,
placed at the top of the list and the result
was a wonderful model which clearly re-
ects the company’s whole ideology.
And in the meantime, Schuco has succeeded
in satisfying customers’ requests.
The number of new releases was made
clear. The intention was to encourage
new fans of these collectors’ models
to acquire new releases and not to put
them o as a result of too great a choice
which they could not a ord.
Last year, in 2005, Schuco then put its
foot on the gas in a big way (or should
we say “on the diesel”?) The legendary
Lanz Eilbulldog was launched on a scale
of 1:18. Not actually an agricultural tractor,
it has now risen to become the collectors’
favourite as a result of the models
on a scale of 1:43. In addition, it was
produced at a level of quality which was
to die for. A second tractor, the Fendt
Farmer II, had chugged its way into the
hearts of collectors as a 1:43 model – as
a logical consequence the model was
produced on a scale of 1:18.
It goes without saying that there were
also new releases on a smaller scale,
such as the Güldner, the Fahr D 177 and
the Massey-Fergusson, and even the little
European cult tractor, the Fergusson TE
20. With all its new releases, Schuco has
remained loyal to its principle of improving
the detail with ever better quality. A
highpoint of this development must surely
be the Claas combine-harvester. Who
would have thought two years ago that
we would seriously consider including
such a model? Increasingly, gures which
are more appropriately designed are playing
a crucial part in the model scenes. It is
Miniature historic tractors
not just the model but also the diorama
which collectors nd so charming.
Schuco’s decision in 2006 to plough the
furrow it once had ploughed before was
less surprising. The small Fergusson TE
20 is stunning, produced in a large scale
with a host of unbelievably ne details
and well-known models in their own
scenes are produced with ever-greater
precision. You can’t help wondering
when the rst potato-planting machine
with real small potatoes will be included
in Schuco’s catalogue.
In conclusion, it is clear that Schuco has
developed its own new market with
high levels of brainpower, taste and by
making astute decisions. A whole raft
of collectors has fallen under the spell
of this new area with its interesting
models, produced
with the highest
degree of precision.
The name of
Schuco is closely
linked with this
area for collectors.
The speed
with which this
development has
swept through
the market has
nothing to do
with the tranquil
world of agricultural machinery where
top speeds of 20 km/h are considered
to be hair-raising. So a more tting
comparison would be a di erent farming
