These phenomena imply serious problems, such as the strong population
concentration in urban environments, pollution, the distribution of natural
resources, or the “technological exclusion” of large parts of the population.
All of this constitutes a fundamental factor for social restructuring and coexistence,
and requires in-depth study, which has been carried out throughout
the year. We hope to have the results by the first quarter of next year.
8. The determining factors of the entrepreneurial spirit in Spain and Europe.
This project aims to analyse the lack of business sense that exists in our
country, a fact which appears to be connected to university education, and
exclusively of the errors of not creating a bridge between scientific knowledge
and the applicability of the attained knowledge to society. It is a supplement
to our study “Transferring university-based research to private
companies”, which was completed by our academy last year. To be concluded
in 2006.
9. The common space of knowledge of the EU. After the study had terminated
and been disseminated at the end of last year, it was presented to different
communities in order to enrich its content. The first of these meetings took
place in Valencia last ovember and will continue next year starting in Extremadura.
10. Energy: The present and future of technology. We already have the edition
that will be debated in various forums and communities.
The mission of the Institute is to assist in the further development and in the practical
application of the concept of sustainability throughout Europe. Consequently, it
acts at the interface between the various scientific disciplines, the decision making
s sector and the public and provides service to the governments in Europe as well as
to the private sector and to the scientific community.
Peter A. Wilderer acts as Director and Josef Bugl serves as Deputy-Director. The
Advisory Board currently consists of Hans Huber, Martin Grambow and David
Johnstone.
On the essence of sustainability
To promote the concept of sustainability science a partnership for sustainability was
formed in 1997. Members of The Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS) are MIT,
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, The University of Tokyo and Chalmers University,
each of these universities represented by their respective president. In 2005,
the University of Tokyo decided to launch a project called “Integrated Research
System for Sustainability Science (IR3S) which will be financially supported by the
Japanese Government. IoS was asked to join the scientific advisory committee of
this project, and Peter Wilderer was asked to act as editor-in-chief of a journal on
Sustainability Science to be published by Springer. Cooperation with AGS in general
and with the University of Tokyo in particular is already in progress.
Master course in Industrial Ecology in progress
On advice of IoS the Singapore based German Institute of Science and Technology
(GIST) started a master course in Industrial Ecology. The course is organised in
cooperation with the Nanyang Technical University (NTU) in Singapore. IoS supports
this project by providing lectures and scholarships. 15 students were enrolled.
They completed with great success and enthusiasm the first phase of the programme
(lectures) and the second phase (internship in German companies). Currently the
students work on their master thesis’s.
The Institute contributes to the EU Water Supply and Sanitation Technology
Platform (WSSTP)
The WSSTP is a European initiative, open to all stakeholders involved in the European
water sector. Major achievements have been made over the past 15 months
within the five thematic working groups (Water Management, Urban and Peri-
Urban Water Systems, Water in Industry, Water in Agriculture, and Cross-Cutting
Issues). The documents produced by these groups have been merged into three
comprehensive documents ready for further discussion and refinement.
