MEETING OF THE STEERING GROUP ON LAW AND ETHICS IN THE
GLOBALIZED ECONOMY OF DECEMBER 15, 2006
AT THE MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE FOR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY,
COMPETITION AND TAX LAW, MUNICH*

All the participants first introduced themselves: Professor Kenneth Dam, former Deputy
Secretary in the Department of Treasury and in the Department of State of the U.S. and
former Assistant Director for National Security and International Policy of the Office of
Management and Budget, formerly Provost of the University of Chicago, and Vice
President at IBM Corporation, currently Professor Emeritus of American & Foreign Law at
the University of Chicago; Dr. Francis Gurry, Deputy Director General and the Legal
Counsel of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); Professor Alain
Pompidou**, former Professor of Histology, Embryology and Cytogenetics in the medical
faculty of the University of Paris, former Vice-President of the Ethics Committee of the
Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) and former President of the European Parliament's
Scientific and Technological Options Assessment Office, currently President of the
European Patent Office, Munich; Professor Straus, Dean of the Class for Social, Legal and
Economic Sciences, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Professor of Law and
Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Intellectual Property Competition and Tax Law;
Professor Brigitte Tag**, Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, University of
Zurich and Vice Dean of the Class for Social, Legal and Economic Sciences, European
Academy of Sciences and Arts; Dr. Reinhard Wieczorek, Deputy Mayor for Labour and
Economic Affairs of the City of Munich.
This time unable to attend the meeting were: Professor Prabhu Guptara, Executive
Director, Organisational Development, Wolfsberg; Professor Andreas Heldrich**, former
Rector of the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich; Professor Klaus M. Leisinger**,
President and CEO of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development and Professor
for Development Sociology at the University of Basel; Professor Ernst Joachim
Mestmäcker**, Director (emeritus) of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private and
International Private Law in Hamburg; and Professor Matjaz Mulej, Faculty of Economics,
University of Maribor.
