Nikola Toplev: Die Kunst der Begegnung
Nikola Toplev lässt uns Begegnungen mit einem universellen
Ausschnitt seiner Wirklichkeit erfahren. Viele Werke der bildenden
Kunst, des geschriebenen Wortes oder der Musik beruhen
auf der Begegnung des Menschen mit der realen Welt. Wir setzen
uns sozusagen mit der Wirkung jener Wirklichkeit auseinander
und versuchen ihr entsprechend zu begegnen. Ein aktives
Geschehen, welches uns herausfordert, bestätigt, in ein
Spannungsfeld drängt, beunruhigt oder beruhigt, ängstigt oder
hoffen lässt.
Die Bilder von Nikola Toplev könnten als spezifischer Versuch
verstanden werden, aus Wirkung und Gegenwirkung eine Begegnung
entstehen zu lassen, die einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt.
Seine Landschaftsbilder zeugen von einer reflexiven
Auseinandersetzung mit Raum und Natur. Die Begegnung von
Himmel und Erde als Thema begleiten seine Arbeiten, der
Versuch mit leuchtenden, komplexen Farbkompositionen und
Strukturen, Licht -und Schatteneffekten eine Symbiose einzugehen,
wird scheinbar verhindert durch eine waagrechte Gerade,
die Linie des Horizonts. Doch in diesen Bildern des Künstlers wird
dieser Horizont (griechisch Gesichtskreis) gleichsam zur Vision
der Einheit, die Bedeutung der Einheit von Mensch und Natur an
sich, bestimmt durch einen melancholischen, und doch schlusssendlich
hoffnungsvoll geprägten Unterton.

In seinen "Baumbildern" kommt die Vertikale als Spannungsfeld
noch hinzu, doch der formale Ausdruck der Neigung der
Bäume erzeugt plötzlich Bewegung und Gegenbewegung und
somit Begegnung unter "Gleichgesinnten", die ihre Verwurzelung
in der Erde finden als sogenannter Ankerpunkt um in nicht
sichtbaren Höhen zu verschwinden.
Nicht von ungefähr dominieren in den Bildern von Nikola Toplev
(vor allem großformatige Leinwandgemälde und kleinere Arbeiten
auf Karton), die waagrechten und senkrechten Linien. Sie
bilden ein Gefüge, das der Komposition eine gewisse Festigkeit
verleiht, eine Basis gibt für das "Wagnis" Farbe. Denn Farbe ist
dem Maler Toplev wichtig. Er experimentiert in seinen großformatigen
Bildern mit Farbauftrag, Untermalung und Schichtenaufbau,
reduziert das plakative mit einer Art Patina um Oberflächenstruktur
des pastosen Farbauftrags hervorzuheben.
Seine Farben müssen leuchten, bestechen, reizen. Die Bilder
wachen auf aus ihrer statischen Ruhe, werden zum Leben
erweckt. Die Vertikalen in den "Baumbildern" und Stilleben
können sich plötzlich zu einem Gewoge über die Bildfläche vereinen.
Baumstämme und Vasenhälse gucken nach links und
rechts und es scheint als würden die Protagonisten der
Toplev´schen Bühne zueinander sprechen, ihr eigenes
Theaterstück inszenieren.
Die Bilder von Nikola Toplev begegnen und bewegen uns als
innere Visionen. Ihnen haftet etwas traumhaftes, melancholisches
und doch können sie eine Brücke schlagen zu einem
hoffnungsvollen ja fast heiteren Ausblick.

Nikola Toplev: The Art of Contact
Nikola Toplev allows us experiences contact with a collective
segment of his reality. Many works of the fine arts, either
written words, or music are based upon a contact between
people and the real World. We examine the effects of this reality,
so to speak, and accordingly try to establish a connection.
This is an active experience which challenges, confirms, exhilarates,
is unsettling or calm, frightens or brings hope.
The paintings by Nikola Toplev could be interpretet as a specific
attempt at allowing a contact to be made between effect
and counteraction, leaving behind a lasting imression. His
landscape paintings bear a reflexive interaction between space
and nature. The contact beween Earth and the heavens
accompany his works as a theme, and the attempt at maintaining
a symbiosis with bright, colour compositions and structures,
lightning and shadow effects, is appearently prevented
through a horizontally straight line: the line of the horizon. The
horizon (Greek meaning: character circle) in the artist’s paintings,
represents a vision of unity, so to speak, meaning the
harmony between humanity and nature, expressing an atmosphere
of melancholy, and yet finishing with an optimistically
formed undertone.

In his “tree paintings”, the vertical is also added, generating a
sense of energy, yet the formal impression of the tree´slope
suddenly produces both movement and countermovement.
This in turn, brings about contact under a “co-directionality”
that finds its roots in the ground as a so called anchor point,
in order to disappear into unseen heights.
Basically, nothing more than horizontal and vertical lines dominate
in the paintings by Nikola Toplev (particularly large format
canvas paintings and smaller works using carton). They form a
construction that lends certain strength to the composition; a
basis giving way to a “risk” colour. That’s because colour is
important to the painter, Toplev. In his large format paintings,
he experiments with colour consistency, and grading, diminishing
the boldness with a kind of patina, in order to highlight
surface structure of a paste-like colour consistence. His
colours need to shine, impress and excite. The paintings are
aroused from their static dormancy, and are brought to life.
The verticals in the “tree” and stile life paintings can suddenly
be combined, producing a surging motion across the surface of
the painting. Tree trunks and vase necks seem to glance in
both directions, and it appears as if the protagonists on
Toplev’s stage speak to one another, staging their own play.
The paintings by Nikola Toplev make contact with us, and we
are moved towards an inner vision. They adhere to something
wonderful, melancholy, yet nevertheless can build a bridge
towards a hopeful or even happy outlook.

BIOGRAPHISCHE DATEN
Geboren 1965 in Skopje (Mazedonien).
1990 kam Nikola Toplev nach Salzburg.
Über 20 Jahren arbeitet es als bildender Künstler.
Seit 2001 Betreiber der Galerie 40 in der Kaigasse, Salzburg.
Dort präsentiert er seine eigenen Arbeiten und stellt Werke
anderer Künstler aus.
Derzeit lebt und arbeitet der Künstler in Salzburg.
