Meilensteine der Unternehmensentwicklung
Milestones in the Company’s History
1955
NASA.
1970
Die USM Corporation, Boston, und Hasegawa Gear
Works, Tokio, gründen zur Herstellung und weltweiten
industriellen Vermarktung der Harmonic
Drive Getriebe die Harmonic Drive System GmbH
in Deutschland und die Harmonic Drive Systems
Inc. in Japan. Die Anforderungen der Märkte führen
zu kontinuierlichen Neu- und Weiterentwicklungen
von Harmonic Drive Getrieben in verschiedenen
Bauformen und Baugrößen. Diese kommen zunächst
vor allem in Industrierobotern sowie Werkzeug- und
Druckmaschinen zum Einsatz.
1976
Die Harmonic Drive System GmbH präsentiert erste
Getriebe für Anwendungen in der europäischen
Luftfahrt. Hohe Präzision und geringes Gewicht der
Harmonic Drive Getriebe sind für diesen Erfolg
ausschlaggebend.
1982
Die erfreuliche Geschäftsentwicklung – mittlerweile
beschäftigt das Unternehmen mehr als 30
Mitarbeiter – erfordert neue Räumlichkeiten.
In Langen, nahe Frankfurt/Main, dem ersten Standort
der Gesellschaft, entstehen Gebäude für Vertrieb
und Verwaltung sowie für Entwicklung und Fertigung.
Der Wandel von einer Vertriebsgesellschaft
hin zu einem Fertigungsunternehmen wird vorbereitet.
1988
Personal folgen. Am neuen Standort werden individuell
auf die Belange der Kunden zugeschnittene
Antriebssysteme entwickelt und in der bekannt
hohen Harmonic Drive Qualität gefertigt.
1994
Die Gesellschaftsanteile werden von Reinhard
Ernst – seit Gründung in der Geschäftsleitung –
übernommen; sämtliche Aktivitäten werden in der
Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH gebündelt.
4
1955
The US-American Walt Musser applies for a patent
for the Harmonic Drive operating principle. His
invention is fundamentally different to conventional
epicyclic gears. In the beginning the development
and production of the new precision gear is carried
out exclusively for the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA).
1970
The USM Corporation, Boston, and Hasegawa Gear
Works, Tokyo, establish together two new companies:
the Harmonic Drive System GmbH in Germany and
Harmonic Drive Systems Inc. in Japan for the
production and world-wide industrial marketing of
the Harmonic Drive gear. New market requirements
lead to the continuous further development of the
Harmonic Drive gears in various types and sizes.
The products are primarily used in industrial robots,
machine tools and printing machines.
1976
The Harmonic Drive gear is applied for the first time
in the European aerospace industry. The high
precision and low weight of the Harmonic Drive
gear are the key factors for this success.
1982
The positive business development – by now the
company employs more than 30 people – makes
new premises necessary. Buildings for sales and
administration as well as for development and
production are erected at the original location of
the company in Langen near Frankfurt. First
preparations for the transformation from a sales
operation to a manufacturing company are thus
initiated.
1988
The continuous expansion of the company as well
as the plan for the further development necessitate
a change of location. A new facility with a site area
of 35000 m 2 and combined office and factory area
of 6500 m 2 is established in Limburg, located ca.
65 km northwest of Frankfurt/Main. This is followed
by major investments in both machines and
personnel.
At the new facility custom-made actuators and
motion control systems are developed and manufactured
in the high quality always associated with
Harmonic Drive.
1994
The company shares are taken over by Reinhard Ernst –
a member of senior management since 1970 – and
the company activities are brought together within
the Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH.

The company is certified for the first time according
to the DIN EN ISO 9001 standard. This logical step
for the company serves also to document the high
internal quality standard outside the company as
well. The improvement of key business processes and
structures well beyond the requirements of the
standard continues under the title „Total Quality
Management”.
1998
There are further major investments in modern CNC
machine tools, special tooling, measuring machines
and inspection equipment for the development and
production of Harmonic Drive gears. Further highly
qualified personnel are employed and trained to
maintain the high quality standard. These measures
enable the development and manufacture of
complete actuators and custom-made motion control
systems in addition to gears and actuators.
1999
Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH becomes
Harmonic Drive AG.
The transformation into a joint-stock company
provides the basis for further expansion of the
company and also to increase transparency. This,
in turn, serves to strengthen the trust of our customers
in the stable future of the company.
2001
The development of new products is a major
contribution to the best annual result since the
company was founded.The daughter company
Micromotion GmbH is founded in Mainz-Gonsenheim,
Germany, specializing in the development and
manufacturing of high-precision micro-gears using
the LIGA process.
2002
At the end of the year 150 people are employed by
Harmonic Drive AG. Compared to 1997, the number
of employees has doubled.
2004
Daughter companies are established in order to
expand our sales activities in Great Britain, France
and Italy. A further daughter company, Harmonic
Drive Polymer GmbH, is established in Hallstadt,
in order to develop the market for Harmonic Drive
precision gears manufactured in plastic. Harmonic
Drive AG now has 175 employees and sucessfully
implements an integrated management
system comprising quality assurance, environmental
protection, worker safety and aerospace
quality management. Also in the future our customers
will be the focus of the activities of everyone working
in and for Harmonic Drive AG.
1996
Das Unternehmen wird erstmals gemäß DIN EN
ISO 9001 zertifiziert. Ein für die Gesellschaft
selbstverständlicher Schritt, der den hohen internen
Qualitätsstandard auch nach außen hin dokumentiert.
Die weit über die Anforderungen der Norm
hinausgehende Verbesserung aller Geschäftsprozesse
und Strukturen wird im Sinne eines Total
Quality Managements fortgeführt.
1998
Es erfolgen umfangreiche Investitionen in modernste
CNC-Werkzeugmaschinen, Spezialwerkzeuge,
Prüfmaschinen und Prüfmittel für die Entwicklung
und Fertigung von Harmonic Drive Getrieben.
Weitere qualifizierte Mitarbeiter werden eingestellt
und trainiert, um den hohen Qualitätsstandard zu
sichern. Bedingt durch diese Maßnahmen können
am Standort Limburg, neben kompletten Antriebssystemen
und kundenspezifischen Systemlösungen,
Getriebe und Sonderantriebe für den europäischen
Markt entwickelt und hergestellt werden.
1999
Aus der Harmonic Drive Antriebstechnik GmbH
wird die Harmonic Drive AG.
Die mit der Umwandlung in eine Aktiengesellschaft
verfolgten Ziele sind die Sicherung der Unternehmensnachfolge
sowie die Schaffung von Transparenz.
Dadurch soll das Vertrauen der Kunden in
die Zukunft des Unternehmens weiter gestärkt
werden.
2001
In Mainz-Gonsenheim
wird die Tochtergesellschaft Micromotion GmbH
gegründet, die sich auf die Entwicklung und
Herstellung hochpräziser Mikroantriebe durch
Anwendung des LIGA-Verfahrens spezialisiert hat.
2002
Am Jahresende sind etwa 150 Mitarbeiter bei der
Harmonic Drive AG tätig. In 5 Jahren hat sich die
Anzahl der Beschäftigten verdoppelt.
2004
The Components
Flexspline
Eine zylindrische, verformbare Stahlbüchse
mit Außenverzahnung
A flexible cylinder with external teeth and
a flanged mounting ring
8
Circular Spline
A solid steel ring with internal teeth
Wave Generator
Eine elliptische Stahlscheibe mit zentrischer Nabe
und aufgezogenem, elliptisch verformbarem
Spezialkugellager
The Wave Generator is a thin raced ball bearing
fitted onto an elliptical plug serving as a high
efficiency torque converter
Principle of Operation
The Flexspline is slightly smaller in diameter than the
Circular Spline resulting in it having two fewer teeth on
its outer circumference. It is held in an elliptical shape by
the Wave Generator and its teeth engage with the teeth
of the Circular Spline across the major axis of the ellipse.
As soon as the Wave Generator starts to rotate clockwise,
the zone of tooth engagement travels with the major
elliptical axis.
When the Wave Generator has turned through 180 degrees
clockwise the Flexspline has regressed by one tooth relative
to the Circular Spline.
Each turn of the Wave Generator moves the Flexspline two
teeth anti-clockwise relative to the Circular Spline.
Die Vorteile
The Advantages
Hohe Zuverlässigkeit und lange Lebensdauer
Aufgrund der geringen Anzahl von Bauteilen erreichen
Harmonic Drive Getriebe weitaus höhere MTBF-Werte als andere
Getriebetypen.
Hohlwelle. Kabel, Wellen, Laserstrahlen usw. können so auf
einfache Weise durch die Hohlwelle geführt werden.
Hervorragende Positionier- und Wiederholgenauigkeit
Harmonic Drive Getriebe besitzen eine hervorragende Positioniergenauigkeit
von weniger als einer Winkelminute und eine
Wiederholgenauigkeit von nur wenigen Winkelsekunden.
High reliability and long operating life
Due to the small number of parts Harmonic Drive gears reach
much higher MTBF values than other gear types. This is
supported by the comparatively low Hertzian contact stresses
between the gear teeth.
Small dimensions and low weight
The large number of teeth in engagement ensure that the
material within the Harmonic Drive gear is used to a higher
degree than in any other gear type. This results in more compact
and lightweight gear solutions.
High single-stage reduction ratios
High single-stage reduction ratios ranging from 30:1 to 320:1
can be achieved with only three gear components.
High efficiency
An efficiency of up to 85 % can be achieved under rated operating
conditions. Harmonic Drive gears are not self-locking and
do not exhibit stick-slip effects.
High torsional stiffness
Harmonic Drive gears exhibit very high torsional stiffness over
the complete torque range, as well as almost linear hysteresis
behaviour.
Zero backlash
Harmonic Drive gears exhibit no backlash during their
complete operating life.
Hollow shaft
Harmonic Drive gears provide the option of a central hollow
shaft. This can be used to pass cables, shafts or even laser
beams through the centre of the gear.
Excellent positioning accuracy and repeatability
Harmonic Drive gears provide a positioning accuracy of better
than one minute of arc and a repeatability of just a few seconds
of arc.
Anwendungen Luftfahrt
Redundantes Getriebe
Sicherheitskritische Applikationen gem.
So stellt z.
gemeinsame Antriebswelle zwei HFUS-Getriebe in Spiegelanordnung
Aviation Applications
Redundant Gear
Safety critical applications according to FAR 25 require that a single
point failure does not lead to a catastrophic result. This is only based
on the general possibility of such a malfunction, which means that
mechanical systems require a redundant design with a parallel load
path. Furthermore, it has to be ensured that the failure modes allow
that a failure in one path does not block the second load path. These
requirements result in a special design, which provides such a
redundant layout. An advantageous feature of the Harmonic Drive
gear is here the low number of parts and the knowledge of the
different possible failure modes. For example, the Flexspline design
ensures that a tooth crack will not block the gear.
In this specific case (patent applied for), a single input shaft drives
two HFUS gears in mirror arrangement, where Wave Generator,
Flexspline and Circular Spline are doubled. The special design ensures
that the incoming load is distributed over both load paths in an
equal way. In the case of a failure on one gear the second set is still
able to carry the applied loads.
Trolley Lift for Airbus
On board of the Airbus A380 special elevators are used in order to
transport the catering trolleys between the different levels of the
aircraft. These elevators have been developed by ESW Extel Systems
Wedel. Harmonic Drive gears are used for actuation, because of their
compactness and reliability. Special attention was given to a noisereduced
integration in order to reflect passenger demands with respect
to comfort. The lift itself is a safety-critical element.
The trolley lifts have been used first on the A340-600, where they
are now successfully in service. The Harmonic Drive gear used is a
modified unit made in stainless steel, which takes into account the
special requirements with respect to available space and environmental
conditions.
Piloteneingabegeräte
Für die Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstelle ist bei modernen Flugzeugen
mit fly-by-wire die Schaffung eines künstlichen Gefühls
erforderlich, um eine
Rückmeldung über den
aktuellen Flugzustand zu
schaffen. Hierbei wird bei
einigen Militärflugzeugen
erstmals aktives forcefeedback
verwendet. Dies
liefert dem Piloten umgehende
und präzisere Rückmeldungen
über den Flugzustand
seiner Maschine
als dies mit den bisherigen
passiven Systemen möglich
ist. Harmonic Drive Getriebe
Wahl kennzeichnen. Zunächst sind hier die Abmessungen und
die exzellente Fühlcharakteristik aufgrund der Spielfreiheit und
des linearen Verhaltens unter Last zu nennen. Weiterhin erlaubt
die Konstruktion der Harmonic Drive Getriebe, detaillierte
Informationen über die Zuverlässigkeit und Versagenstypen
und -wahrscheinlichkeiten zu liefern. Darüber hinaus sind die
jahrzehntelangen Erfahrungen mit Harmonic Drive Getrieben
unter extremen Umweltbedingungen sehr wichtig bei der
Auswahl.
Drohne
Zuverlässige Aufklärung
vor Ort ist eine wichtige
Voraussetzung für die
Arbeit der NATO-Streitkräfte.
Die Drohne KZO der
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics
ist ein Aufklärungsund
Ortungssystem, das
dieses Bildmaterial und
Zieldaten in Echtzeit liefert.
Temperaturen wichtige Entscheidungskriterien.
Pilot Inceptors
For the human machine interface, modern
fly-by-wire aircraft require a feedback
device which provides information about
the current flight condition to the pilot.
New military airplanes use for the first
time active force-feedback, which has
significant advantages compared to the
more widely used passive systems. In
comparison, this allows the pilot to have
greater situational awareness of the current
flight condition of the aircraft and receive
immediate and proper feedback from it. Harmonic Drive gears
are used as a result of several aspects which make them the
preferred choice for this application: First of all, compactness
and excellent feel quality due to the zero backlash and the
linear behavior under load are of key importance. Furthermore,
the possibility to provide detailed information on reliability
figures and failure modes and probabilities plus the long-term
experience with Harmonic Drive gears under
harsh environmental conditions were
important for the selection. The customer
appreciated as well the professional
support in the proposal and
development phase of the product.
Drone
Reliable reconnaissance is crucially important
in NATO operations. Produced by
Rheinmetall Defence Electronics, the KZO
drone is a reconnaissance and targeting
system capable of providing real-time
imagery and target data. The drone is allweather-capable
and can operate night
and day.
Actuators using Harmonic Drive gears are
used in the control surface actuation system
due to their compactness, accuracy
and precision. Furthermore, overload capabilities
and good efficiency at low temperatures
were important factors as well.
The long and successful experience
with Harmonic Drive gears in civil
applications in the wings of the
Airbus family were another convincing
argument for the customer.
verwendet.
Septa and Sara Space Actuators
For many years, the Space Mechanisms Division of Snecma
Moteurs has developed and built standardized actuators for
space applications. Depending on the type of application and
size of the satellite, different types are required. One of the main
applications are the solar array drive mechanisms, which orient
the solar panels towards the sun. This means that the electrical
power generated by the solar cells has to be transmitted via the
actuator as well.
Harmonic Drive gears type HDUC-14-100 component sets have
been used for more than ten years in the Septa 31 actuator.
This means that this actuator and therefore the gear can look
back on a very long space heritage. Nevertheless, each project
and application is a new challenge and requires the necessary
carefulness in production and product support.
As a new member in the family, the SARA 21 is now spacequalified.
This actuator uses for the first time a CSD-20-160
component set for space applications.
Stereo Vision Measurement System (SVMS)
erlauben.
Harmonic Drive Getriebe vom Typ HFUC-14-100 in Edelstahl
werden für beide Achsen eingesetzt. Die Harmonic Drive AG
hat dabei unter Reinraumbedingungen geschmierte Getriebe
mit einem entsprechend imprägnierten Lagerkäfig gefertigt.
Waffenstation
and observation robots) anzutreiben.
Remote Weapon
Station
This is the only remote weapon station
for light and medium calibre weapons providing
the gunner total protection inside the vehicle at all
times. The complete weight of the station, without weapon
and ammunition, is just 122 kg. It can be operated over a wide
temperature range, between –40° C and +70° C and fulfils
the environmental conditions of MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461.
Harmonic Drive gear component sets and units are used in the
main azimuth and elevation axes of the turret and the azimuth
and elevation axes of the camera. Key criteria leading to the
selection of these products were the high pointing accuracy,
low weight, central hollow shaft for the passage of cabling and
the high power density. The demanding specifications led to
the development of a tailor-made solution, featuring special
materials and special lubricants.
Bomb Disposal Robot
Harmonic Drive products are also ideally suited for military
robotic applications. Telerob GmbH rely on Harmonic Drive
hollow shaft units to drive the arm of their robot tEODor (telerob
Explosive Ordnance Disposal and observation robot). By the
beginning of January 2004 more than 100 robots of this type
had already been built. The power and signal cables can be
passed through the hollow shaft of the unit. In addition to
high power density and high reliability the stiff output bearing
is strong enough to support the arm without requiring additional
bearing support. Zero backlash and high tilting stiffness enable
a precise and safe handling performance.

Harmonic Drive Antriebe
eingesetzt. Die Schwenkneigeköpfe
zeichnen sich
durch höchste Präzision und Zuverlässigkeit
aus. Sie werden für die optische Beobachtung
und intelligente Sensorkontrollund
Positionieraufgaben für die mobile
Grenzüberwachung, Einsatz in Flugzeugen
und Überwachungseinrichtungen
eingesetzt. Durch den Einsatz
von hochgenauen und spielfreien Getrieben
werden die Systeme den hohen technischen Anforderungen
gerecht.
Camera Head
Harmonic Drive gears are used for the azimuth- and elevationaxes
of the 2-axis tilting heads. These tilting heads are particularly
precise and reliable and can fulfil advanced requirements for
observation and reconnaissance systems for border observation
and security applications. The tilting head can be used to
position a variety of sensors and/or cameras. A hollow-shaft
passing through the azimuth-gear is used in combination with
a special slip ring to pass the cable from the sensor/camera
to the control unit. This allows complete 360 degree observation.
The tilting head achieves a positioning accuracy of 0,02° and
can be used over a wide temperature range (-40° C - +60° C).
The low weight and compact dimensions
make these tilting heads ideal for highly
mobile “pack-and-go” applications.
Automatic Loading System
The Leclerc Main Battle Tank (MBT) is one of the most advanced
tanks operating in the world today. Mobility, firepower and
crew survivability have been treated with equal importance in
the design of this MBT. It is capable of engaging the enemy at
50 km/h on any terrain, at day or night and in any weather
conditions. Its precise high-rate fire-on-the-move capability is
enabled by an automatic ammunition loading system for the
long NATO 120 mm gun.
The automatic loading system allows the crew to be reduced
to three from the normal four. By allowing the ammunition to
be stored in compartments separate from the crew positions
the automatic loader is also a major contribution to improved
crew survivability and comfort. The limited space available
inside the turret made Harmonic Drive
component sets the logical choice of
gear for the automatic loading
system because of their compact
dimensions, high torque capacity
and proven reliability.
Einsatz. Die entscheidenden Kriterien wie hohe Präzision,
kompakte Abmessungen, die Realisierung einer kundenspezifischen
der Harmonic Drive Getriebe.
Light Naval Gun
The new MLG light naval gun is a remotely operated, autonomous
system equipped with an integrated fire control unit. As primary
or secondary armament, the new gun – coupled with highperformance
FAPDS ammunition – is ideal for major surface
combatants and support vessels operating in coastal areas and
harbours. Another version of this weapon is also used on the
Eurofighter aircraft. Harmonic Drive technology is applied in
the loading and locking device.
The shell is moved out of the shooting position when the weapon
is passive using a Harmonic Drive component set. The main
criteria leading to the selection of this product were the compact
design, high reliability and long operating
life. The corrosion resistant materials also
allow the weapon to be used over a wide
operating temperature range in different
operating environments.
Helicopter Landing Aid
The Stabilised Horizon Reference System (SHRS) has been
designed to complement the Stabilised Glide Slope Indicator
SGSI and flight deck lighting to provide a total suite of visual
landing aids. The system is fitted with electroluminescent panels
and comprises two fixed illuminated reference lights that are
fitted to the ship´s main structure and a roll bar pivoted in the
centre between the two fixed panels. The SHRS provides a “True
Horizon” reference to the pilot by utilising the ship´s main gyro
signal to drive the bar in an equal and opposite direction to
the ship´s roll motion. Harmonic Drive gears are used for the
azimuth-axis. The main criteria leading to the selection of these
products were the high precision, compact design, absence
of stick-slip effects and customer-specific
modification to suit the demanding
marine environment.

For applications where the required torque
capacity, torsional stiffness or rated
operating life are lower than for standard
gears there is a variety of strategies which
can lead to substantial weight reduction.
A planetary gear stage integrated within
the wave generator can be used to increase
the overall reduction ratio of the gear and
allows a smaller, lighter motor to be used.
Another strategy is to optimize the shape
of the Circular Spline, e.g. with a
T-shaped cross-section. The low Hertzian
pressures in the tooth system also allow
the use of lightweight, non-ferrous metals
for the Circular Spline and Wave Generator
plug, which can reduce the weight of the
gear by more than 50 % compared to the
standard gear.
Lebensdauer und Zuverlässigkeit
Lifetime and Reliability
beitragen.
Although the flexspline is deformed elastically, the design
ensures that it is operated in the infinite fatigue life region.
Only under very extreme torque levels above the momentary
peak torque is the gear operating in the region of finite fatigue
life. For all normal operating modes the life of the gear is limited
by the Wave Generator bearing. The end of life is reached with
the beginning of pitting on the bearing races. At this time,
there is still a large operating reserve existent.
Wear in the tooth system is very small due to the low Hertzian
contact stresses and the low sliding speeds. Here, the large
number of teeth engaged in the torque transmission (up to
30 %) is a great advantage.
