A string of festivals // The fast during Lent
doesn’t extend to musical pleasures in Vienna.
The programme of the festival calendar is
packed full of highlights.
21st Vienna Spring Festival. This year’s festival
(2 March to 13 May) at Konzerthaus
centres on Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz
Schubert. “Les Musiciens du Louvre • Grenoble”
present their refreshingly modern interpretation

OsterKlang. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra
plays its traditional “Spring in Vienna” concert
on Easter Sunday at the Musikverein under
the legendary French conductor Georges
Prêtre as part of the 16th OsterKlang festival
(31 March to 8 April).
The programme of this year’s Easter time festival
ranges from Jacques Offenbach and Johann
Sebastian Bach to Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton
Bruckner and György Ligeti.
Accordion Festival. The “squeezebox” rules
again in March at the 13th Accordion Festival
in Vienna (25 February to 25 March). This
year’s special focus is on “Bella Italia”, featuring
renowned musicians such as Riccardo Tesi. As
usual the festival brings the international elite
to the city, with star accordionists from countries
such as Ireland, Belgium, France, Finland,
Poland, the USA and, of course, Austria.
Vienna Blues Spring. Europe’s longest
blues festival (20 March to 30 April) kicks
off with a pre-opening event on 13 March.
New York blues heavyweight Popa Chubby
stops over at the Reigen club during his European
tour. A Blues Charity Gala featuring
Hans Theessink & Roland Guggenbichler,
the Colin Linden Band & Adam Rafferty
will take place at City Hall on 26 March to
support “flora”, a Viennese women’s association
to fight breast cancer.
The sound of Vienna. The weanhean festival
is devoted to traditional Viennese music; this
year’s edition (19 April to 23 May) focuses
on Jewish composers and lyricists in Viennese
music.
Balkan Fever. The Balkan is said to begin in
Vienna, and so the Austrian capital is the perfect
location for the Balkan Fever festival (26
April to 13 May). A wide range of musical
styles and crossovers between them present the
Balkan as a creative, diverse, modern region.
Artists from 14 nations perform at the festival.

story. Die aus Bosnien stammende Sängerin Natasa
Mirkovic lebt seit über zehn Jahren in Wien. Auf Einladung
von Gabriel Yared („Der englische Patient“) hat sie in
Paris den Titelsong „When the Heart Dies“ zu Angelina
Jolies Regiedebüt eingesungen. Der Film „In the Land
of Blood and Honey“ ist nun in Europa angelaufen. Auch
der Soundtrack ist soeben erschienen. Natasa Mirkovic
wird am 27. April im Rahmen von Balkan Fever auftreten.
// Bosnian-born singer Natasa Mirkovic has been living
in Vienna for more than ten years. Upon the invitation of
Gabriel Yared (“The English Patient”) she sang the title
song “When the Heart Dies” for Angelina Jolie’s directorial
debut “In the Land of Blood and Honey” that is currently
showing in European cinemas. The soundtrack has just
been released, too – a part of the royalties will go to
Bosnian war orphans. Natasa Mirkovic will perform at the
Porgy&Bess club on 27 April as part of Balkan Fever.
