L.L. ⁄ What do you treasure about your home?<br />
H.K. ⁄ Because of my job at KTM I travel all around the world, from bone-dry<br />
Africa to Dubai to America. That’s what makes you recognize the value of<br />
your home more than when you always live in paradise. Tyrol is an incredibly<br />
lush, fertile and safe land and it can hardly be compared to anywhere else in<br />
the world. Everyone who lives here can account themselves lucky!<br />
L.L. ⁄ Your personal favourite spot in <strong>Zillertal</strong>?<br />
H.K. ⁄ There are many! I own a hut near Hochfügen, for example, and of<br />
course I like to spend time there. And standing somewhere on a sunny mountain<br />
and looking over the summits is always beautiful.<br />
L.L. ⁄ In your opinion, which types of sports shape the <strong>Zillertal</strong> most?<br />
H.K. ⁄ The new golf course is situated in my village and I’m sure it’s going to<br />
have an influence on the region. Apart from that – skiing – obviously. And<br />
in addition to that I’ve been urging to improve the <strong>Zillertal</strong> for cyclists – be<br />
it along the Ziller-Promenade or for mountain bikes. There are so many<br />
possibilities! Other regions and valleys show that this can really be a good<br />
alternative for summer if it’s not just done half-heartedly.<br />
L.L. ⁄ Do you often think back to your great successes or are you reminded by<br />
the media more often?<br />
H.K. ⁄ Actually the latter. The Rally-adventures have made a much more<br />
lasting impression than the athletic successes of my motocross career. Paris-<br />
Dakar, Paris-Moscow-Beijing, all the way across Australia, South America,<br />
Nevada – all these are experiences you can’t really organize and put into<br />
practise yourself, if there’s no race. These experiences are immensely valuable<br />
for me!<br />
L.L. ⁄ Do you still sometimes ride a motorcycle, simply for enjoyment?<br />
H.K. ⁄ No, not since my son’s accident 10 years ago. But that’s not because I<br />
demonize the things but because I promised to my son that his injury is not<br />
going to be the way it is now forever. Some day – and I’m convinced – we’ll be<br />
able to ride together, and until then I’ll wait!<br />
L.L. ⁄ You speak of a stroke of fate that not only had a lasting influence on your<br />
career but also on your life. Looking back, would you do anything differently?<br />
H.K. ⁄ Many things – even though I did not do anything wrong. After my son’s<br />
injury I campaigned for the improvement of safety garments. Of course it<br />
