MARINEPOOL 2 Layer<br />

In 2-layer fabric the outside material<br />

is laminated onto a membrane. This<br />

requires an additional inside lining<br />

to protect the membrane from<br />

damage and abrasion. Furthermore<br />

this lining forms a layer in between<br />

the skin and the membrane that<br />

reduces or avoids sweating.<br />

MARINEPOOL 2.5 LAYER<br />

Marinepool developed a new generation<br />

of 2.5 layer fabrics which had<br />

to undergo extensive testing before<br />

they went into production. The first<br />

layer is a hard wearing outer fabric<br />

(e.g. Nylon) which is water repellent.<br />

The second layer (=coating) is the<br />

functional layer. Without an<br />

additional lining the coating would<br />

be unprotected and would stick to<br />

the skin when sweating. The innovation<br />

in the new generation is an inside<br />

protective layer on the coating<br />

which includes tiny airpockets in<br />

between the coating and the skin,<br />

so a lining is no longer required.<br />

This results in extremely reduced<br />

weight and a fabric with excellent<br />

3 layer<br />

stretch<br />

functionality, i.e. water proofness<br />

and breathability.<br />

MARINEPOOL 3 Layer<br />

This is how the Marinepool 3 layer<br />

fabric works:<br />

The outer shell (normally Nylon) has<br />

to suite the operating conditions, so<br />

we use for light outdoor jacket light<br />

weight and rip-proof fabric (like Ripstop),<br />

on the other hand for offshore<br />

sailing gear hard wearing fabric (like<br />

Nylon Oxford) is used.<br />

This outer shell is equipped with a<br />

water and soil resisting finish (see<br />

also DWR). Onto this outer shell the<br />

membrane is laminated – it gives<br />

the fabric its functionality.<br />

Premium sailing wear gets an additional<br />

PU coating between outer shell<br />

and membrane – it protects against<br />

salt crystals and avoids clogging of<br />

the membrane (this kind of fabric is<br />

also called '4 layer' – see also XPU<br />

und XPU Stretch mem brane).<br />

The last and innermost layer – often<br />

a thin net – protects the membrane<br />

against abrasion and makes the<br />

fabric more eudermic, so with a 3<br />

layer fabric there is no need for a<br />

lining. A 3 or 4 layer fabric is very<br />

likely tougher than a 2 or 2.5 layer<br />

fabric.<br />

body conscious design possible,<br />

the result: clothing that follows the<br />

body´s contours, is lighter and optimizes<br />

freedom to move.<br />

There are two different kinds of<br />

fabrics, 2-layer and 3-layer fabrics.<br />

A 2-layer fabric is composed of an<br />

outer fabric on which the second<br />

layer, the MARINEPOOL XPU membrane,<br />

is laminated. While the first<br />

gives the garment its durability,<br />

making sure it is hard wearing and<br />

tough, the PU coating on the latter<br />

provides perfect protection from<br />

salt crystals and effectively prevents<br />

these from clogging the membrane,<br />

thus sustaining full breathability<br />

when worn at sea.<br />

Two layer fabric necessarily requires<br />

an inside lining to protect the sensitive<br />

membrane from abrasion and<br />

chafe. Usually a functional lining<br />

conveying dampness is used for<br />

this purpose (see fuctional lining). In<br />

2-layer fabrics the stretchy characteristics<br />

of a fabric are shown to<br />

their best advantage, in 3-layer<br />

fabrics the emphasis is on the protection<br />

of the membrane (by the<br />

third - inside - layer).<br />

All fabrics are thoroughly tested by<br />

our professional teams in challenging<br />

conditions- races like the Vendée<br />

Globe, Route du Rhum, Barcelona<br />

World Race ). The fabrics are<br />

exceptionally abrasion resistant,<br />

highly breathable and therefore ideal<br />

for use in offshore conditions. All<br />

seams are sealed under heat with<br />

XPU-Tape guaranteeing 100%<br />

waterproof gear. Some producers<br />

use stretch inserts for certain parts<br />

of a suit only, but to take full advantage<br />

of the outstanding qualities of<br />

stretch fabric it is necessary to produce<br />

the whole suit of stretch material<br />

and also to pay special attention<br />

to design and the direction and<br />

positioning of seams and design<br />

features.<br />

MARINEPOOL XPU-MEMBRANE<br />

Wind, cold and humid ity are the<br />

variables influencing body temperature<br />

and a substantial factor in the<br />

perceived well-being and the performance<br />

of an athlete.<br />

EXTREME WATERPROOFNESS<br />

No sport requires more from clothing<br />

than water sports. Sitting and<br />

kneeling e.g. in sailing puts much<br />

higher pressure on fabrics than any<br />

other activity. The Marine pool XPU-<br />

Membrane remains waterproof in<br />

the worst of conditions and keeps<br />

the body dry. The membrane is<br />

wind-proof as well and makes sure<br />

there is no cooling effect on the<br />

body. The membrane is designed to<br />

regulate the body climate, on one<br />

side to avoid overheating in times of<br />

high activity and on the other side to<br />

avoid hypothermia in between<br />

maneuvers while being inactive.<br />

HIGH BREATHABILITY<br />

The new XPU-Membrane guarantees<br />

quick transport outside of<br />

surplus humidity which is produced<br />

by the human body when highly<br />

active. Thus it avoids the build up of<br />

mois ture inside the clothing and<br />

keeps the body climate in balance.<br />

Even after wash ing the gear many<br />

times and after heavy use this technology<br />

remains fully functional.<br />

Our XPU-Membrane shows the<br />

following characteristics:<br />

Micro-porous PU-coating with nonporous<br />

membrane, DWR (durable<br />

water repellency) treated surface for<br />

long lasting water repellency.<br />

Extreme waterproof (water column<br />

20.000 mm), highly breathable<br />

(20.000*g/sqm/24h), durable water<br />

repellency (DWR) (min. 80 points<br />

after 20 times washing, PU-coating,<br />

specially designed for use in salt<br />

water: protects the membrane from<br />

salt crystals and makes sure it does<br />

not get clogged which would reduce<br />

its functionality.
