MARINEPOOL 2 Layer
In 2-layer fabric the outside material
is laminated onto a membrane. This
requires an additional inside lining
to protect the membrane from
damage and abrasion. Furthermore
this lining forms a layer in between
the skin and the membrane that
reduces or avoids sweating.
MARINEPOOL 2.5 LAYER
Marinepool developed a new generation
of 2.5 layer fabrics which had
to undergo extensive testing before
they went into production. The first
layer is a hard wearing outer fabric
(e.g. Nylon) which is water repellent.
The second layer (=coating) is the
functional layer. Without an
additional lining the coating would
be unprotected and would stick to
the skin when sweating. The innovation
in the new generation is an inside
protective layer on the coating
which includes tiny airpockets in
between the coating and the skin,
so a lining is no longer required.
This results in extremely reduced
weight and a fabric with excellent
3 layer
stretch
functionality, i.e. water proofness
and breathability.
MARINEPOOL 3 Layer
This is how the Marinepool 3 layer
fabric works:
The outer shell (normally Nylon) has
to suite the operating conditions, so
we use for light outdoor jacket light
weight and rip-proof fabric (like Ripstop),
on the other hand for offshore
sailing gear hard wearing fabric (like
Nylon Oxford) is used.
This outer shell is equipped with a
water and soil resisting finish (see
also DWR). Onto this outer shell the
membrane is laminated – it gives
the fabric its functionality.
Premium sailing wear gets an additional
PU coating between outer shell
and membrane – it protects against
salt crystals and avoids clogging of
the membrane (this kind of fabric is
also called '4 layer' – see also XPU
und XPU Stretch mem brane).
The last and innermost layer – often
a thin net – protects the membrane
against abrasion and makes the
fabric more eudermic, so with a 3
layer fabric there is no need for a
lining. A 3 or 4 layer fabric is very
likely tougher than a 2 or 2.5 layer
fabric.

standards. Three layer
stretch material makes

body conscious design possible,
the result: clothing that follows the
body´s contours, is lighter and optimizes
freedom to move.
There are two different kinds of
fabrics, 2-layer and 3-layer fabrics.
A 2-layer fabric is composed of an
outer fabric on which the second
layer, the MARINEPOOL XPU membrane,
is laminated. While the first
gives the garment its durability,
making sure it is hard wearing and
tough, the PU coating on the latter
provides perfect protection from
salt crystals and effectively prevents
these from clogging the membrane,
thus sustaining full breathability
when worn at sea.
Two layer fabric necessarily requires
an inside lining to protect the sensitive
membrane from abrasion and
chafe. Usually a functional lining
conveying dampness is used for
this purpose (see fuctional lining). In
2-layer fabrics the stretchy characteristics
of a fabric are shown to
their best advantage, in 3-layer
fabrics the emphasis is on the protection
of the membrane (by the
third - inside - layer).
All fabrics are thoroughly tested by
our professional teams in challenging
conditions- races like the Vendée
Globe, Route du Rhum, Barcelona
World Race ). The fabrics are
exceptionally abrasion resistant,
highly breathable and therefore ideal
for use in offshore conditions. All
seams are sealed under heat with
XPU-Tape guaranteeing 100%
waterproof gear. Some producers
use stretch inserts for certain parts
of a suit only, but to take full advantage
of the outstanding qualities of
stretch fabric it is necessary to produce
the whole suit of stretch material
and also to pay special attention
to design and the direction and
positioning of seams and design
features.

MARINEPOOL XPU-MEMBRANE
Wind, cold and humid ity are the
variables influencing body temperature
and a substantial factor in the
perceived well-being and the performance
of an athlete.
EXTREME WATERPROOFNESS
No sport requires more from clothing
than water sports. Sitting and
kneeling e.g. in sailing puts much
higher pressure on fabrics than any
other activity. The Marine pool XPU-
Membrane remains waterproof in
the worst of conditions and keeps
the body dry. The membrane is
wind-proof as well and makes sure
there is no cooling effect on the
body. The membrane is designed to
regulate the body climate, on one
side to avoid overheating in times of
high activity and on the other side to
avoid hypothermia in between
maneuvers while being inactive.
HIGH BREATHABILITY
The new XPU-Membrane guarantees
quick transport outside of
surplus humidity which is produced
by the human body when highly
active. Thus it avoids the build up of
mois ture inside the clothing and
keeps the body climate in balance.
Even after wash ing the gear many
times and after heavy use this technology
remains fully functional.
Our XPU-Membrane shows the
following characteristics:
Micro-porous PU-coating with nonporous
membrane, DWR (durable
water repellency) treated surface for
long lasting water repellency.
Extreme waterproof (water column
20.000 mm), highly breathable
(20.000*g/sqm/24h), durable water
repellency (DWR) (min. 80 points
after 20 times washing, PU-coating,
specially designed for use in salt
water: protects the membrane from
salt crystals and makes sure it does
not get clogged which would reduce
its functionality.
