Was tust du, wenn du gerade keine Kunst sammelst?
Ich bin mit Leidenschaft Rechtsanwalt. Das Sammeln
ist für mich ein Hobby. Unsere Kanzlei Leinemann
anspruchsvolleren Werken.
Die Sammlung umfasst mittlerweile 170 Werke, von
denen viele in euren Büros hängen, vor allem in
Berlin. Vor Kurzem kam eine sehr beeindruckende
Neuerwerbung hinzu.
What do you do when you are not collecting art?
I’m a very dedicated lawyer. Collecting art is my hobby.
Our office at Leinemann Partners deals largely with
construction law and with the allocation of public
funds, and the subject of art in construction brought
me closer to the fine arts. I purchased my first work
in 1995. It was a work by Jennifer Kiernan. I don’t believe
she managed to make it on the art market. I have
three figurative wood sculptures by her—at the office
they are known as the “colourful fretsaw works”. But
I’m still proud of my early acquisitions. Everyone who
comes into contact with art for the first time, without
any preconceptions, finds the works that are colourful
and easily recognisable to be good at first glance. In
time one’s ability to see things more abstractly grows
stronger, and with that one’s interest in more demanding
works increases.
Your collection now has 170 works, many of them
hanging in your offices, particularly in Berlin. Just
recently an impressive new acquisition was added.
The work is by Yutaka Sone. I wasn’t familiar with
the artist until I saw a cityscape of Manhattan carved
in marble at David Zwirner’s stand at the Art Basel
two years ago. “Highway Junction 405-10” is similar:
auf David Zwirners Stand sah. „Highway Junction
405-10“ ist ähnlich, der Ausschnitt einer Stadtlandschaft
von Los Angeles, ein echter „Crowd-Pleaser“.
Die Arbeit misst 1,60 mal 1,25 Meter. Winzig kleine
Dazwischen
befindet sich aber auch ein riesiger Immendorff.
Welcher Sammler würde ein Bild, das „Mein Weg ist
richtig“ heißt, nicht haben wollen? Es macht Mut!
Zudem ist meine Frau Eva in Halle geboren. Sie also
it shows us a sector of a Los Angeles cityscape—and
it’s a real crowd pleaser. The work measures 1.6 by
1.25 metres. Tiny little houses, trees, signs, and millimetre-sized
cars on highways have been carved in
marble—all from one single piece. It is really a very
beautiful work, accessible to everybody, and it suits
our law firm well, which deals with construction, traffic,
and infrastructure.
You collect almost exclusively paintings and sculptures,
and you’ve specialised in works that deal with
construction, with the urban environment, and with
architecture. Just behind Yutaka Sone’s work there
is a work by Thomas Scheibitz, hanging in the foyer.
And between them there is another large work by
Immendorff.
What collector would not want to have a picture entitled
“My Way is Right”? It’s encouraging! Moreover,
my wife was born in Halle. She’s Eastern German, I’m
Western, and that’s the reason we discovered our little
passion for Immendorff. The history of the division
of Germany and the wall belong to his themes. The
picture shows Immendorff in a Roman chariot wearing
devotional objects as he storms through the whitecapped
crest of a wave—a symbol of the Berlin Wall.
