berüchtigt: Anfang 2011 in Dresden hatte unsere Jury
verursacht. Am Ende erreichten wir damit ganz
unerwartet eine Aufmerksamkeit für die Toilettenfrage.
Heute stellt die Polizei bei Großeinsätzen Dixi-
Klos für die Polizistinnen auf. Wir fördern aber auch
Diplom- und Masterarbeiten in den Bereichen Baurecht,
Vergaberecht und Architektur und sponsern den
deutschen Baugerichtstag, der auch einen Forschungspreis
vergibt. Im nächsten Jahr organisieren wir
gemeinsam mit der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf eine
Betonkunstaktion: Drei oder vier Bauunternehmen
nehmen teil, in deren Werkstätten 15 eingeladene
Man erkennt mich
Man
Ob man nun hundert Bilder
anschaut, spielt dabei keine Rolle.
Danke für das Gespräch!
Das Sammlergespräch mit Ralf Leinemann führte
der Auktionator und Kunsthistoriker Fares Al-Hassan.
Es fand am 6. Dezember 2012 in der Bar Tausend in
Berlin statt.
In 2008 you founded the Leinemann Foundation for
Education and the Arts.
The foundation is an instrument that helps to promote
the collection, and it also helps to anchor it in
the art scene and to give it a permanent position there.
We work with art colleges and universities, and we offer
an award each year to a young artist. We’ve even
become notorious: Early in 2011 in Dresden our jury
awarded third prize to a life-sized statue of a female
police officer in battle attire who appears crouched
down, urinating. The tabloid newspaper Bild referred
to the work as the “pissing police officer”. With that
work we created an utterly surprising amount of buzz
in the press. Ultimately we managed to draw entirely
unexpected attention to the question of toilet facilities.
Now the police set up porta-potties for female
police officers at every event where the police appear
in large numbers. But we also support students working
on their master’s degree in the field of construction
law, allocation law and architecture, and we sponsor
the German Baugerichtstag (a ‘Day of Hearing’ for
construction projects), which also offers a prize for
research. Next year, together with the Art Academy
in Düsseldorf, we are organising a ‘cement art action’:
three or four construction companies are participating;
in their workshops, 15 artists will be invited to create
their own cement sculpture. The works will be exhibited
in Nordrhein-Westfalen and Berlin.
Are you recognised as a collector?
I do not consider myself a great collector who has
his hand in opulent art transactions. I’m usually not
recognised, and there are many whom I don’t know
in the field. But that’s good the way it is. Recently I
visited New York and, by coincidence, I found myself
at the Gagosian Gallery. You admire the opulent
rooms, and there are pleasant people there whom you
can ask about the artists exhibited on any particular
wall. But then you get the answer: “One minute,
please. I’ll have to look that up.” And if you want to
know what a picture costs, they tell you: “I’ll just call
our sales department and find out.” Wherever you go,
you might find somebody who can answer your questions,
or you might run into a trainee who’s there on
his first day. But that’s the same wherever you go. I
submerge and disappear in the art world, and I find
that rather pleasant. Whether you have a hundred pictures,
or just one, or none at all, decisive is the fact that
you can enjoy art. It makes no difference whether you
buy it or just look at it.
Thank you for the conversation!
