What moves and touches
Mit frischem Elan und französischem Flair startet das Fantoche 2013 in den Trickfilm-Herbst.
An der elften Ausgabe des Festivals feiern wir nämlich die Grande Nation und entsinnen uns
bei dieser Gelegenheit auch der Herkunft unseres Namens: Dieser wurde zu Beginn des letzten
Jahrhunderts durch den Pariser Pionier-Animationsfilmer Émile Cohl geprägt. Auch im aktuellen
französischen Trickfilmschaffen gilt nach wie vor: «Ça bouge!» Der Erfindungskraft
scheinen auch heute keine Grenzen gesetzt zu sein.
Das Herzstück von Fantoche bilden aber immer noch unsere beliebten Wettbewerbsprogramme
und eine handverlesene Auswahl aktueller Langfilme. Damit möchten wir unser
anspruchsvolles Publikum nach allen Mitteln der Animation verwöhnen. Die Türen, die neue
Technologien der Animation öffnen, werden im Programmteil «Animation multimedial» aufgestossen:
Zu entdecken gibt es etwa «Motion Comics» oder die neuesten Entwicklungen im
Game Design. Auch Kindern, Jugendlichen und den Fachleuten haben wir eigene Programmteile
auf den Leib geschneidert: Für sie stehen Filme, Vorträge, Workshops und vieles mehr
bereit.

With fresh impetus and French flair Fantoche 2013 will open an animated fall season. For
the eleventh edition of the festival we are celebrating “La Grande Nation”. This will give us
the opportunity to seek out the origins of the festival’s name: it was coined at the start of the
last century by Parisian pioneering animated filmmaker, Émile Cohl. “Ça bouge!”, the
slogan of our French Focus, applies to ancient as well as current French animation film
production: there still appears to be no limit to inventive talent in France.
Our popular competition programmes remain at the heart of Fantoche as well as a
handpicked selection of newly launched feature films. We aim to spoil our sophisticated
audience with all our animated means. The doors to new technologies in film animation are
thrown wide open in our “Multimedia Animation” programme. For instance, you can explore
“Motion Comics” or the most recent developments in game design. Our programme
also includes tailor-made sessions for children, teenagers and experts including films,
lectures, workshops and more.
2013 is going to be a particularly fine year – don’t miss out!

Like with wine, every year is different when
it comes to animated films. This year,
there have been relatively few entries for the
Swiss competition, but amongst them
we found some truly tasty drops. We will be
presenting these in a rhythmic and
narrative programme block.

Abouet und Oubrerie erzählen die Geschichte

Abouet and Oubrerie tell the story of clever
and independent Aya who lives with her

on the Ivory Coast. While Aya’s friends

rather study medicine and not be forced into
a stereoty pical woman’s role.

school. Gradually, however, he dauntlessly
manages to secure his place in the children’s
battle between belonging and exclusion.

«Consuming Spirits» ist ein Independent-

Sullivan hat mit Lege animation und Stop-
Motion-Technik ein raues Epos geschaffen.
“Consuming Spirits” is an indepen dent animated
film in which lots of alcohol is imbibed.
Yet it’s some dark secrets, which connect all
three main characters. In cut-out and stop
motion techniques Sullivan created a raw epic.

stone to feature film production. But
apart from a few major names, this was not
so much the case with animation in the

Thanks to the CNC / French Archive we can
show classics and curiosities from French
animation history spanning very early animation
– a nod to the original “Fantoche” –
through to the 1960s, including major names
such as Paul Grimault. The latter is an early
exponent of a different kind of feature film
who had a big influence on Osamu Tezuka,
Borowcyck and others.

“Hôtel” by Benjamin Nuel is a crossmedia
project combining animation, alternative
game design and visual arts. The presentation
in the Kunstraum Baden incorporates a
cinema auditorium, a games console and a
man-sized sand sculpture. This grounds
Benjamin Nuel’s world in the here and now.

in Frankreich. Er verband kreatives
Talent aus der visuellen und bildenden
Kunst mit der innovativen Verwendung neuer
Technologien. Nach seinem Oscar-Erfolg
«Logorama» (2009) entwickelt das Studio
nun Fernsehserien und Langfilme.
Nicholas Schmerkin has made Autour de
Minuit one of the most dynamic, eclectic
animation production companies in France,
marrying creative talent from the visual
and plastic arts with innovative use of new
technologies. Following its Oscar win for
“Logoroma”, the studio is now developing
TV series and feature films.

Since its opening in 1999, La Poudrière has
established its reputation as an outstanding
animation school. Accepting only few students
annually and fostering close connections
with the animation industry and with broadcasters,
La Poudrière graduates excellent
talents. School director Annick Teninge will

Porcolino the piglet has big plans: he wants
to make consumers happy as a “Glückshof”-
Mortadella sausage. But the path to happiness
proves to be convoluted and rocky. This
performance breaks new trans media ground:
animated films, puppet shows, live animation
as well as games and other fun approaches
weave together to form an lucid story.
A collaboration with Figura Theaterfestival Baden
Digitalisation means nowadays games are
everywhere. The exhibition contrasts the
games from the new game generation with the
25-year-old game and game design culture
that is already nearly forgotten with its game
halls, as well as arcades with gaming machines
and home computers. This exhibition
offers plenty more to discover beyond retro.

Regisseure und talentierte Geschichtenerzähler
richten ihre Bilder und Klänge an
unser junges Publikum. In den beliebten
Workshops können die Heranwachsenden zudem
selbst Hand anlegen, Bilder in Bewegung
setzen und Zeichnungen zum Klingen
bringen. Wir freuen uns auf den kritischen
Blick der Kinderjury und auf die Stimmen
der jungen ZuschauerInnen für die Wahl

Auf der grossen Leinwand zeigt Fantoche
von Kindern und Jugendlichen selbstgemachte
Trickfilme. Entstanden sind diese
charmanten Erstlingswerke in ein- oder
mehrtägigen Workshops und unter der Leitung
der Filmerinnen Anka Schmid und Maja
Gehrig. Mittels Legetrick, Knetfiguren und
Pixilation erzählen die JungfilmerInnen
kurze Geschichten aus ihrem Leben.
Fantoche will be showing cartoons made by
children and young people on its big screen.
These charming début works were created in
workshops over a day or more under the
guidance of filmmakers Anka Schmid and
Maja Gehrig. Using cut-out animation,
modelling clay figures and pixilation, these
young filmmakers tell short stories from
their lives.

Zehn Bildspezialisten, die in den Bereichen
Illustration, Zeichnen, Comic und Verlag
tätig sind, wurden mit einhundert Studenten
der Hochschule Supinfoco» zusammen gebracht.
Gemeinsam erforschten sie die
2D-Grafikwelt jedes Künstlers und wandelten
diese in 3D-Animationen um. Das Ergebnis
ist eine Sammlung von Filmen in einer
E-Book-/iPad-App, deren interaktive Gestaltung
einen Einblick in den kreativen Prozess
des zweiten «Le-Laboratoire-d’images»-
Projekts bietet.
Ten image-makers working in illustration,
drawing, comics and publishing were teamed
up with hundred students from Supinfocom
school. Together they explored and transformed
each artist’s 2-D graphic world into 3-D
animation. The final result is a collection of
films as an “ebook/iPad app” whose interactive
face provides an insight into the creative
process of the second “Le Laboratoire
d’images” project.
