interactions with greek tragedy from the
Fourth century bc to the Middle ages
Beyond the Fifth Century brings together 13 scholars
from various disciplines (Classics, Ancient History,
Mediaeval Studies) to explore interactions with
Greek tragedy from the 4th century BC up to the
Middle Ages. The volume breaks new ground in
several ways: in its chronological scope, the various
modes of reception considered, the pervasive interest
in interactions between tragedy and society-at-large,
and the fact that some studies are of a comparative
nature.
This new commentary on Ovid’s Heroides 10 offers
an introductory essay, a revised text, and detailed
line-by-line interpretative, linguistic and stylistic
commentary on the text. Combining traditional
philological approach with some of the concerns of
more recent critics, both introduction and commentary
analyse the construction of the text and survey
aspects of Ovidian language and style, as well as the
relationship of the epistle to its literary models.
der euagoras
des isokrates
ein Kommentar
[A Commentary]
Die heutige Forschung findet allmählich einen neuen
Zugang zu Isokrates, dem griechischen Redner des
4. Jh. v. Chr., der dem 19. und teilweise dem 20.
Jh. aufgrund von platonischem Einfluss eher fremd
geblieben war. Der isokratische Euagoras, ein Enkomion
auf den kyprischen König Euagoras I., übte
einen entscheidenden Einfluss bei der Etablierung
und Entwicklung des Prosa-Enkomions aus. Die
vorliegende Arbeit ist die erste moderne kommentierte
Edition des isokratischen Euagoras. Das Buch
bietet eine ausführliche Einleitung, den griechischen
Text und einen interpretierenden Kommentar.
Griechenland.
Present-day research is gradually finding a new
approach to Isocrates, the 4th-century Greek orator,
who due to the influence of Plato was largely
neglected in the 19th and part of the 20th century.
His Euagoras, an encomium of the Cypriot king
Euagoras I, had a decisive influence on the establishment
and development of the prose encomium. This
volume presents the first modern edition and commentary
of Isocrates’ Euagoras. It offers a detailed
introduction, the Greek text and an interpretational
commentary.
