The Destroyed Synagogues of Vienna
Virtual city walks
This book is devoted to the former Viennese synagogues that were destroyed and thus disappeared irretrievably from the face of the
city. With the help of CAD (computer-aided design) and rapid prototyping a working group based around the two authors was able
to virtually rebuild the destroyed synagogues. In this guide historical photographs and plans from the time these synagogues were
built are contrasted with the virtual reconstructions. Together with the accompanying texts they provide a complete image of the
individual houses of prayer. Of particular interest are the recreations of the urban fabric that place the destroyed synagogues in the
context of the present-day city.

Das Bild der türkischen Metropolen Istanbul und Ankara wird bestimmt durch eine augenfällige Regellosigkeit. Inmitten dieser
chaotischen und gesichtslosen Agglomerationen ist kaum noch Platz geblieben für Spuren der städtischen Geschichte. Nur
wenige Anhaltspunkte erlauben den Rückschluss auf die früheren Phasen der Stadtentwicklung. Eine Verbindung zwischen der
osmanischen Stadt und der modernen Stadt in der Türkei wird nur selten gezogen, und wenn, nicht als Kontinuität, sondern oft als
Ablösung. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist ein Versuch, diesen Übergang zu erforschen und als einen kontinuierlichen Prozess
zu verstehen. Der Wandel der osmanischen Stadt zur modernen türkischen Stadt, wie sie seit Beginn der Industrialisierung parallel
zur Entwicklung in Europa entstand, wird im Detail dargestellt und in Bezug zu den dramatischen Veränderungen des politischen

The Formation of Gecekondu Settlements in Turkey
The Case of Ankara
In Turkey, since the middle of the 1940s, gecekondu (squatter) settlements have emerged in an urban context characterised by
rapid rural-to-urban migration, inefficient administrative structures and intense land speculation. Today, some practices of the early
gecekondu are still in use, while its dwellers have introduced new strategies to avoid demolition, get access to infrastructure and
achieve legalisation. Recent gecekondu builders by-pass planning authorities by adopting tools of formal planning. At the same
time local authorities bend their own rules and tend to tolerate informalities.
