Perversion of Signs, project drawingMaking ofPerversion of Signsrelations between penal law and the prison, for example, one notes thatalthough the prison is in principle subordinate to the law, the prison alsohas the necessary means to organise and administer its internal affairs. Thespecific kind of autonomy that the prison enjoys in relation to penal law isnot relative, absolute or even what is sometimes referred to as determinationin the last instance. This implies that there is no natural continuumto unite the law with its apparent object of jurisdiction, just as there is nonatural continuum between seeing and thinking. This is a direct challengeto currently prevailing concepts and conventions, i.e., to currently hegemonicknowledge/power relations. The network of power relations that indiffering degrees manages to construct such an apparent continuum canbe challenged from a variety of points along the intersecting lines unitingand (paradoxically) simultaneously separating linguistic discourses andnon-linguistic institutions. It is no small achievement that Ciervo indicateswhere these points of resistance might be, and that he manages to dothis in a way that is neither casual or overly didactic.24
