in dieser Zeit meine Familie und Freunde zu Hause
sehr vermisst habe, da mir die beiden Feste einfach so
wichtig sind.
Ich war tatsächlich überrascht und enttäuscht, als wir
nach der Kirche am Heiligen Abend zuhause gar nichts
gemeinsames gemacht haben und ich mir zur Feier
des Tages eine Portion Nudeln gekocht habe, während

Family Phiri in their village for a week. We really
did enjoy our stay with these friendly people in the
outskirts of nature. At the farm we not only helped
with the chickens and cows, we were also shown the
bush and could help fertilizing the maize fields. And
again all of us enjoyed eatching the sky at night, which
looks bright because of the shining moon and so, so
many stars.
Of course we also experiences Christmas and New
Year for the first time at the other time of the world. I
have to admit that I missed my family and friends very
much during this time, because being together in this
period is so important for me.
That’s why I was surprised and a bit disappointed
when we didn’t do anything together with the family
on Christmas Eve after the church service and I
celebrated alone cooking some macaroni for me...
Only the next day I learnt that Zambians celebrate
the actual day of Christmas, the 25th december.
meine Familie in Deutschland ein schönes Fest hatte.
Am nächsten Tag erst ist mir klar geworden, dass
Weihnachten hier erst am 25. Dezember gefeiert wird.
Mit meinen vier großen Schwestern habe ich Nudeln,
Reis und Kartoffeln gekocht (eine echt schräge
Kombination, hier aber ein Festessen). Beim Kochen
wurde Musik angemacht und alle haben getanzt und
sich auf das Essen gefreut.
Im Großen und Ganzen liegt der Schwerpunkt des
Weihnachts- und Silvesterfestes aber eindeutig in der
Kirche. Dreistündige Gottesdienste, Taufen, und die
großzügigen Geschenke an die Kirche (an Jesus) sind
ein fester Bestandteil und ersetzen unter anderem das
gegenseitige Schenken, wie ich es aus Deutschland
kenne. Auch Silvester habe ich anstatt draußen beim
Feuerwerk drinnen in der Kirche zwischen laut
betenden und singenden Menschen verbracht.
Ich bin froh um meine neuen Erfahrungen und
bewundere, wie sehr die Sambier den ursprünglichen
Sinn dieser Feste im Blick haben, habe jedoch
besonders die Gemeinschaft und das Zusammensein
mit Familie und Freunden in Deutschland zu schätzen
gelernt.
Nun freue ich mich erstmal auf unser Zwischenseminar
in Tansania und den anschließenden Sansibar-Urlaub,
danach auf den Beginn
meiner neuen Arbeit im
Krankenhaus und natürlich
auf den Besuch meiner
Familie und der anderen
Fairreisen-Teilnehmer im
März.
Together with my 4 older sisters we cooked macaroni,
rice and potatos while dancing to african music on the
verandah.
All in all, people here focus more on church services
during the Christmas and New Year’s period. A long
mass including baptizing children and bringing many
offerings to the church (to Jesus) are very important
and replace for example our european tradition of
giving gifts to each other. Also on New Year’s eve
I was inside the church in between a lot of praying
and singing people instead of watching the fireworks
outside.
I am thankful for my new experiences and I admire
those people for focusing on the actual sense of
the festivities, but I also learnt to appreciate the
togetherness with family and friends in Geermany.
Now I am looking forward to our seminar in Tanzania
and vacation in Zanzibar, after that my new work
in the hospital, and finally of course the visit of my
family and the other Fairreisen-participants in march.
