Call for applications for the research<br />

development venture of the ARS<br />

“Bridge to academic career” grants 2009<br />

The ARS aims to enhance academic interest in surgical residents and<br />

fellows and to foster clinically relevant translational research in Switzerland.<br />

30,000.– CHF are made available to fund two applicants involved<br />

in research, at a stage when they are not ready for a SNF or other competitive<br />

funding. The home institution warrants an adequate support (1:1<br />

matching grant + protected time).<br />

Eligibility criteria<br />

– The applicant is a surgical resident or fellow with a clear career plan.<br />

– The home institution provides full support (1:1 matching grant, protected<br />

time).<br />

– The research takes place in Switzerland, preferably in a surgical laboratory.<br />

– Funding is limited for projects of less than 24 months duration.<br />

Applications should be submitted as one PDF file to the project coordinator<br />

of the ARS (Dr Hübner) containing the following documents:<br />

– CV (2 pages) and list of publications.<br />

– Scientific part including preliminary data, research plan, time frame<br />

(2 pages).<br />

– Budget for the proposed study and planned financing (1 page).<br />

– Statement by the home institution of financial matching and letter<br />

of support from the mentor highlighting the applicant’s promising<br />

academic career in surgery.<br />

The board members of the ARS and the delegate for research from the<br />

SGC/SCC council will select the candidates until December 1 st 2009.<br />

The bridge grants will be available by January 1 st 2010.<br />

zum Präsidenten der<br />

European Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary<br />

Association (EHPBA)<br />

Die Europäische Hepato-Pancreato-Biliäre Vereinigung (EHPBA, www.<br />

ehpba.net) wurde 1999 gegründet und ist ein Zweig der internationalen<br />

Hepato-Pancreato-Biliären Vereinigung (IHPBA). Sie bildet ein Forum zur<br />

Förderung und Entwicklung der hepatobiliären Chirurgie in Europa und<br />

Afrika. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt in der Förderung des chirurgischen<br />

Nachwuchses durch HPB-Fellowships und der Zertifizierung von angehenden<br />

HPB-Chirurgen im Rahmen der UEMS (European Union of Medical<br />

Specialists). Im Juni 2009 fand in Athen der EHPBA-Kongress statt.<br />

Im Rahmen dieser Versammlung wurde Pierre-Alain Clavien zum Präsidenten<br />

der Vereinigung gewählt. Stefan Breitenstein wurde zum Mitglied<br />

des Education Commitee und Mickael Lesurtel zum Kassier gewählt. Der<br />

nächste EHPBA-Kongress findet 2011 in Cape Town, Südafrika, statt.<br />

Corrigendum<br />

Im swiss knife 3 / 2009 ist uns bei der Präsentation der SGC-Preisträger<br />

ein bedauernswerter Fehler unterlaufen, first und senior author wurden<br />

vertauscht.<br />

Der Forschungspreis der Association of Research in Surgery ging an:<br />
